Do dogs ask "Why"?
Posted to:
Training & Behavior
Some of you have education in animal science or just general opinions and experience, so I'm curious what everyone thinks - do dogs have the ability to ask the question 'why'? Like "why is it suddenly cold out" or "why did my owner leave".... do their brains function in...

Can you get a dog to go more often?
Posted to:
Training & Behavior
The new pup goes potty so infrequently. She'll go first thing in the morning when she gets out of her crate between 8-8:30. Then she seems to go again around 11:30. After that, she doesn't seem to do anything again until around 4. After that, the next time she has gone both days so far has been...

Should it be a boy...or a girl?
Posted to:
News & Entertainment
It's getting closer to the time that the dane I'm getting my pup from will be going into heat. The breeder had asked me if I wanted a Bitch or a Dog, at the time I really had no preferance and I was happy to be put on her waiting list. At first I started thinking I want a Dog because I don't...

How to tell if a dog is cold?
Posted to:
News & Entertainment
I have a 2.5 yr old Chocolate Lab. How do I tell if my dog is cold? I walk him in 20-30 degree weather with cold winds. His tale is wagging and he seems to be running around happy. What are the signs I should look for when he gets cold?

the right way of doing punishment-based training?
Posted to:
Training & Behavior
No, I am not going to start using this method on my dog. Clicker training works very well for us; plus, she is quite timid and I don't want to shake her confidence. I just want to know about the "right" way of using things like chokes and  unishment-based training. I remember reading...

Much ado about war...

There's been alot of talk of war, war time and those that wage it. I wanted to post something I thought was apropos to this topic. This actually comes from my blog, so I'm not infringing upon any copyrights. Some of this is not relevant to this time period, but some of it definitely is. "We're...

A little brag for Max
Posted to:
News & Entertainment
Yesterday afternoon, two little girls in the neighborhood came by taking orders for Girl Scout cookies. As usual, as soon as the doorbell rang, Max was right there with his nose against the door, waiting. "Sit." He sat, and was up again in about 2 seconds. I opened the door with my left hand...

raw bone & poop question!
Posted to:
Nutrition & Exercise
Just wondering, why does my dog's poop come out very dry and hard after I have given him a raw bone? That's with all the fat trimmed and the marrow removed. It doesn't seem to be causing him any pain or damaging him in any way, but I was just wondering if it was normal.

Is 4 weeks to young?
Posted to:
News & Entertainment
I picked up a puppy yesterday that is only 4 weeks old. The owners were wanting to get rid of the dogs so I took it so that it would have a good home. My main question is, is 4 weeks to young for it to be sperated from the parents? The dog seems healthy and very active but I wasn't sure if there...

A tall, calm dog for Penny?
Posted to:
News & Entertainment
As soon as I get a job down in Sydney, me and the furry family are moving in with my boyfriend permanently. He'll be buying a house with a little yard so we can keep Penny happy and he's agreed to help me take care of an extra dog once we settle in. Some of you might know that I've been more or less...
