A new job for dogs: Reading Teachers!
Posted to:
News & Entertainment
I read about this and just think it's so cool: using therapy dogs to help kids learn to read! The idea is that the dogs are patient & low-pressure "listeners" so that kids don't feel intimidated about reading aloud. [link http://www.therapyanimals.org/read]www.therapyanimals...

Loose Leash Walking - Give & Take or Go Go Go?
Posted to:
Nutrition & Exercise
I was reading an article (I think by Pat Miller) about loose leash walking. The author said that when walking her dog, she uses "with me" to get the dog to walk nicely beside her; she also uses "OK go play" to allow the dog to pull at the end of the leash, explore, sniff around, etc...

Wow there are alot of posts about itchy skin and allergies.... Come on now people... GET YOUR DOG ALLERGY TESTS!!!! If you suspect allergies insist that your vet give your dog a comprehensive allergy test. Vets usually do not offer them right off. Some vets do not offer them at all...in which case...

Eating Habits
Posted to:
News & Entertainment
We have a 14yr old German Shepard/Brittany mix. She was raised in a pack for most of her life and she has an eating habit that is seeming unusal. We keep her bowl stocked, and she only eats what she needs, the other dogs from her "pack" were the same way. All other dogs I have seen will empty...

News & Entertainment
well the cowboys just lost their wild card play off game by 1 point. they had the game won and screwed up a late 4th quarter field goal attempt. at least the colts won. peyton wasnt playing too good today, but their defense stepped up and played better than they have in a while. if the colts lose...

*grumble* Barking on the downstay?
Posted to:
Nutrition & Exercise
Anyone have advice for stopping barking while on a downstay? Mal is making me nuts- he's holding the stay, just barking while he lies there. *grumble* I've *been* reinforcing for silent downs (shortened duration and c/t only for downs he's quiet on) but once we get past about 35 seconds,...

Another BEST Christmas present!
Posted to:
News & Entertainment
I already posted it on the Rainbow Bridge site but I know some people don't travel that way often and just wanted to show this present! During Christmas, the ladies I work with gave me a beautiful throw with the photo of FeFe & the baby birdie on it. Well, Christmas Eve, as soon as we walked...

Help, my dog ate aspirin
Posted to:
News & Entertainment
I am getting ready for school. My stupid and idiotic sister was opening some of the medications in the kitchen (for no reason). Anyways, she dropped some aspirin on the floor, and I think that Riley ate one. I am not 100% sure, as they were tiny and hard to find. My mom is going to call the vet when...

potty issue
Posted to:
News & Entertainment
I am posting this for a friend who also has a dachsie... This is her wording. Some of you already know that my 15 month old 8 1/2 pound wonder, Camilla, has fear and anxiety of the outdoors. There are exceptions - dog park, places that have no cars and no noise. Outside of that, she refuses to go...

To report or not to report

A young (early 20s) couple rents the house on the same lot as ours. It's a little one-bedroom with a nice backyard. One of the reasons why they moved into the house was because the young man decided he wanted a dog and bought a beautiful Pitt Bull, and they couldn't stay in the apartment. In...

Was wondering if any of you had imput on good things for kids to get involved in. I want my kids to get into 4H, but here you have to be 10. They've been in soccer and love that, Tball as well. Ethan wants guitar lessons, but I feel he's too young. He's 7 and we bought him lessons on DVD...

Rejected adoption application.
Posted to:

This is more of a vent. I've applied at this rescue foundation twice. I expected to wait, but after my first application I waited 5 months, no reply. I entered yet ANOTHER application, it's been 3 months and still no reply! I check the site every week, and I've watched 3 dogs of my pick...

Seemingly Random Aggression

Hi! I am new to the forum and looking for any insight you have. My husband and I adopted a female black lab about a year and a half ago. Today we estimate she's about 5 years old. When we first adopted her, she was quite timid with new people but warmed up quickly to my husband and I and now is typically...

Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul?
Posted to:
Nutrition & Exercise
How many of you have or do feed this food. I was looking at the ingredient list and it looks to be pretty high quality. Not to mention the co-op carries it and is just right down the street. I was just wondering what all of you thought about it and how your dogs did on it.

Anyone feed/fed Monica Segal's raw diet?
Posted to:
Nutrition & Exercise
I have her Raw Foods Recipes booklet, and since I just figured out Cherokee isn't allergic to turkey like I thought, the 60 pound 'recipe' is do-able. I bought pretty much everything we need, and tried to start yesterday, but Cherokee has apparently decided not to like raw foods anymore....
