Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul?

Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul?

How many of you have or do feed this food. I was looking at the ingredient list and it looks to be pretty high quality. Not to mention the co-op carries it and is just right down the street. I was just wondering what all of you thought about it and how your dogs did on it.

I think it's a great food. I feed Chicken Soup Lite cat food in my mix of foods for my hedgehog. I don't feed that brand to my dog because I like Eagle Pack Holistic a little better. But I think Chicken Soup is the most affordable holistic food out there. My best friend switched her Coonhound to it from Nutro and he went from doing well to awesome. The most noticeable difference is that his coat is shinier, softer and sheds less.

Good food, I used it for 6mo to no ill effect, only switched to rotate protein sources....

Its on Linda Arndt ( k-9 nutritionist) list of food to feed your dog.   Her criteria is:
    • Feed trial results
    • Laboratory tests on guaranteed anaylsis
    • Philosophy of the company
    • Ethics of the company
    • Truth in advertising and marketing

I must say, for some reason she moved it down as an alternative, I'm wondering if its after the Diamond Food scare.
    • Gold Top Dog
Pardon me asking, but what exactly was the Diamond Food scare? I know that Diamond is the company that makes this food, but what exactly happened?
    • Gold Top Dog
Diamond had a quality control problem a few years ago...several dogs died eating the food that had aflotoxin poison from corn. It involed several formulas but there was never any question about Chicken Soup, EXCEPT for the people that wanted to start rumors.   They got on it and the problem is taken care of but Diamond will probably "pay the price" for several years to come.
Again, Chicken Soup was NOT part of the problem,,never was and there is no danger. The whole company has been cleaned up and passed all their inspections.

Looking at her site, it looks like she just recommends one brand of dry dog food.  Is she sponsored by that company?

I digged a bit into the website, and while at first glance it looks like she just endorses Eagle, here's a longer list:http://www.greatdanelady.com/articles/criteria_list_of_better_foods.htm

As was noted, Chicken Soup is suggested as an "alternate" if you can't find one of the "preferred brands."

I know nothing about this person, I just thought it would be interesting to see her suggestions :)
    • Gold Top Dog
She personally was in the trial testing on Eagle Pack and Great Danes....it is the only food that is trial tested and in homes rather than in the company.  She does put Eagle at the top of her list. But her list of recommended food is pretty long....and I think her list of criteria is very good,,,,I especially like the "truth in advertising and marketing" AND "ethics" of the company.

I  suppose if she is only recommending one food, the others would not be listed.  She does have her preference though,,, I guess we all do, huh?
Actually, I guess if your really interested in knowing her relationship with Eagle Pack, you can read this link [linkhttp://www.greatdanelady.com/interview_with_linda.htm]http://www.greatdanelady.com/interview_with_linda.htm[/link] and close to the bottom of it is an explaination of how she got involved with them.

I used it for about 6 - 8 weeks.  My pup loved it at first, then lost interest.  I noticed a big difference in his fur...much softer.  I switched off it cuz he lost interest and he was itching so
I wanted to see if it was the food that made him itch. I liked that it was rather good quality and very easy to find...the price was good too.  Oh, his poops were large in volume and real soft, not pick- up able.  Granted he had soft poo going into this food but never firmed after using for 6-8 weeks.

In most areas this is going to be a good food for less money.  It happen for me that I could get Innova for a couple bucks more a bag, and when I factored in the kcals and the increased amount of CS used per meal, the CS was costing me more than Innova.

While I didn't find the poop to be any greater, it was softer as I recall.

Homemade Dog Treats 1 1/2 lbs of liver
1 cup of oat flour or if allergic get a non gluten flour from the health food store
    2 eggs
    1/2 clove of garlic

Mince meat, garlic and add other ingredients. Bake in a loaf pan for 30 minutes on 175 degrees and cut into portions. Treats can be frozen.

I saw this on Linda Arndt's site. I thought that garlic was toxic to dogs? If so, that kinda makes me doubt her judgement.

Here's the link to it. [linkhttp://www.greatdanelady.com/articles/healthy_homemade_pet_treats.htm]http://www.greatdanelady.com/articles/healthy_homemade_pet_treats.htm[/link]

I feed CS to my dog and cat, and I fed it to my last dog, as well. I've been very happy with it. My pets are healthy and have good coats, and it is an affordable food.
