A new job for dogs: Reading Teachers!

I read about this and just think it's so cool: using therapy dogs to help kids learn to read! The idea is that the dogs are patient & low-pressure "listeners" so that kids don't feel intimidated about reading aloud.

That's cool...I just sent the link to my daughter, who is a reading coordinator.

This has actually been around for a while and there's another program called Reading with Rover that a lot of therapy dogs participate in. In fact, I think someone here has a dog who does that.

Definatley will not be Marlowe's specialty though once he gets certified. He much prefers to stand than lay down. [:)]

We have a few dogs come in for the kids to read to where I work (Mick was one of them).  Here it's called PIE (Pets In Education).  It's a wonderful program  I have to be honest, I don't know who got more out of our visits- the kids, Mick or me.

Zoe's therapy dog group is starting this but we can't do it because I can't get home from my school to get her and back to the school running the program in time.

They ran an article on this in Dogs In Canada last year.  I think it's a fabulous program and I would like to see it implemented in our town.  (I'm an educator.)  I've taken the first step and had my mom's beagle certified through St. John's Ambulance.  We need to have a year under our belt before we can test for kids.

I think these programs are amazing. [:D]
