New Fish Tank!
Posted to:
News & Entertainment
Well, I've been bugging BF for quite some time about getting a fish tank, and yesterday we finally decided to do so... We bought a 29 gallon aquarium, as its our first tank, and we did not want to go too large or too small. We are planning to keep a freshwater tank, saltwater is too much for...

Mastering the dominance ritual
Posted to:
Training & Behavior
Caution: I posted this in the CM section to get good advice on how to do this properly. If you want to engage in an ideological debate on alpha rolls in general, please start another thread elsewhere! Thank you in advance for your respectfulness. I've been doing counter-conditioning/desensitising...

Groan............I have to share (long post)

Let me tell you about my week, first this is both dog and undog related. I had been feeling stressed all week because I have friends and family coming in from several states to stay with me for derby, so I have been working and cleaning house, getting the ground ready for my garden at the community garden...

Reaction to rawhide...advice please
Posted to:
Nutrition & Exercise
I know I should ask this question on another forum but no one is there at the health forum. A colleague gave my dog a compressed rawhide (her dogs love the rawhides). He chewed about 1/5 of it. Early this morning (3:00 AM), he was having diarrhea and vomit some brownish liquid. I waiting to take him...

What do you do with your working dog?
Posted to:
Choosing A Dog
I'm looking for ideas on jobs to give my aussie. I can tell already that he will make a great worker. He follows me around relentlessly and is SO eager to please. It seems like he'd be the happiest camper if I could include him in some of the housework or yard work I do. So, I'm thinking...

Anyone been to a TAGteach seminar?
Posted to:
Training & Behavior
I went to the seminar in Massachusetts this weekend. It was awesome! No, actually, beyond awesome. I loved it. Karen Pryor was our opening speaker, which totally rocked. If you like clicker training your dog, and you've ever wanted to try it on people, or even if you've never thought of it, you'll...

Teaching gundog to be steady
Posted to:
Nutrition & Exercise
Can anyone give me some starter tips for teaching a gundog to be "steady"? (I think that's the right term?) I mean, sitting still while an object is thrown and waiting for the release word. She is a lab pup and will be used to retrieve. I posted a loooong rant in General ("Clueless"...

Adopting a new dog...
Posted to:
News & Entertainment
Well, I've rather convinced myself to adopt another dog from the local shelter. My primary motivation is to have another dog around to keep my current dog company when I'm not around. Otherwise he tends to turn into a kleptomaniac and collects things that I don't want him to collect. then...

Scared of the crate...
Posted to:
Training & Behavior
My family has adopted a 10 month old Blue Heeler/Great Dane (that's a guess, his actual breed is unknown), who has separation anxiety. We haven't left him alone yet, but we have been told that he will chew and have 'accidents' when left alone (he is housebroken). We have a crate for him...

I heard the lady call for her dog and as soon it was with her she grab hold of his collar she started taking it to the house. I continued to walk Blue up the street with him...
