    Reaction to rawhide...advice please

I know I should ask this question on another forum but no one is there at the health forum.

A colleague gave my dog a compressed rawhide (her dogs love the rawhides).  He chewed about 1/5 of it.  Early this morning (3:00 AM), he was having diarrhea and vomit some brownish liquid.  I waiting to take him to the vet just for check up.

I gave him some water with some light chicken broth.  He is not vomiting anymore (well, there is nothing left in his stomach).  His diarrhea is basically water...

Anything anyone can recommend?  I had always stayed away from rawhide and I should not given him rawhide this time.  This was the first time (AND the last time).

    Sincerely,
    Pauline

do you happen to know the ingredients of the rawhide?
    What brand did he get?

If we can find out the brand, we can look up ingredients.

I hope your doggy is ok!

I don't know the brand because my colleague brought one from her home.  I think she mentioned she got a large bag (12 in a bag) from Target.  When I asked her yesterday at work, she thinks it is Pet Essentials (Target brand?)
Based on the recall list (I looked up again this morning), Pet Essentials had some canned food recalled but not the chew toys or anything.  Her two dogs are not having problem at all.

Anyway, I could not locate a Pet Essentials website.  I am still taking Niko to the vet for check up (maybe some type of vitamins or something because, he lost a lot of water from the diarrhea and vomiting).

Other than water with some light chicken broth, should I give him anything else?  He is hungry (he perked up when he smelled his food or the broth).  I just cooked some steamed rice that I might gave him later on after the vet says he is alright.

    Thanks in advance,
    Pauline.

Do your dog a favor, and don't give it rawhide.  It is like the dog eating shoe leather, and has been known to block a dog's intestinal tract.

Well, if he is perking up and wanting to eat, i would say that is a good sign.  But i still agree a visit to the vet is in order.

I stopped giving rawhides to my dogs several years ago. My one golden girl would get it soft and then try to swallow it, choke and gag and gag and bring it back out of her throat.  After the 2d time it happened, no more.  no problem with the other dogs, but if they left one somewhere and she found it, it could be very dangerous for her.
    Good luck with your guy.

This was my first concern when I read this thread. If there is even a chance of a blockage, I would get your dog to the vet ASAP.

Yep, I would definatly see a vet ASAP.  The rawhide could be lodged in his intestines causing all sorts of problems.  It really doesn't matter what kind of rawhide it is.  Rawhide in general isn't good.  Somehowever are worse than others.

See a vet first.  If the vet says there is no blockage or the blockage should pass try adding canned pumkin (not the already spiced pie mix) to his regular diet.  Pumkin will slipperify what's causing the problem and push it through his instestines.  You may also want to buy a probiotic, like Eagle Pack's Stomach Remedy to stop the diareah.

    Good Luck.

I can only tell you that I've had two dogs who would have diarrhea the day following any type of rawhide. I switched to bully sticks.

I've been using Moo's free range bones.  I know a lot of people don't like cooked bones. These are in between.  I've had one break but the other one she's been chewing for over a week and it's not broken at all.  I think the first one might of been kind of weak to start with.  But, I'm getting her more.  They are helping her teeth and she likes them.

How is the dog now?  What did the vet say?

The vet said he is fine.  I will never give him another rawhide.  I knew I should not have taken it when my colleague (who has a husky and a lab) gave it to me to try.  Well, those rawhides are fine for her dogs but not mine!

I will just stick to raw bones that I give him once a week.

    P.S.
I thought at first it was his food!!!  His base food right now is Canidae (he also gets innova and nature's logic on rotation).  I got scared a little bit and came here to check if Canidae issued recall....

Zoe had a similar reaction to a pressed rawhide.  Her body just did not like them.  I am glad your pup is ok!

I would stay away from rawhide and all those icky stuff with coloring at the pet store.

As of early this morning, Niko has gained all the water weight he lost a day ago and back to his naughty self...lol.

I am glad to know that a lot of other dogs have reactions to rawhides not just Niko.
