    Adopting a new dog...

Well, I've rather convinced myself to adopt another dog from the local shelter. My primary motivation is to have another dog around to keep my current dog company when I'm not around. Otherwise he tends to turn into a kleptomaniac and collects things that I don't want him to collect. then he hides them. [:D]

Regardless, he'll be exercised regularly, etc. I'll have plenty of time for him (my other dog collects things when I'm there with him but not paying attention to him Crying), but the dog I fell in love with is a 5 month old puppy. He was a stray dog so he hasn't had any of the typical "pre 5 month old" puppy socialization or behavior. So, I was wondering how to approach things with this dog as far as training and socialization goes. Between the 5 month and 1 year mark what is most important? I've had puppies before, but 8/9 week old puppies so by the time they're five months old they have all the basics. I guess I'm mostly asking what are the main things I should be concerned with and watch out for, are their certain fears typical of puppies that age, etc? Where should I start?

Any help would be appreciated. I'm kind of an information whore, and I want to make sure I completely know what I'm getting into! Thanks :)

I would say that socialization with people and other dogs is the most important thing.  You are playing catch up, of course, and may not be able to go as fast as you would with a puppy.  Socialization:

You need to get him in a puppy training class as much for doggie socialization as for the training.

thank you so much for showing me that link to that post. very helpful.

Now, I'm really excited about getting this guy, and hopefully helping him along to be a happy, healthy, well socialized dog! :)
