Sam has a lump..advice please
Posted to: Health & Grooming
Last night my husband noticed a lump on Sam's neck. It's really obvious so I can't imagine it's been there for long. He doesn't seem at all bothered by it. He yelps and squeals a lot, but that is just how Sam is, it's nothing new and doesn't seem to be associated with touching...

Help... AKC Registration?
Posted to: News & Entertainment
Hi, I just got a Staffordshire Terrier, and from the breed's discription on the AKC web site, she has no flaws. She has been to a couple different homes and I don't see how I could get her parent's papers and things to get her registered. Is there anyway that I could get her Registered without...

California will become the first state to strictly ban long-term chaining of dogs when a new law goes into effect Monday. SB1578, authored by Sen. Alan Lowenthal, D-Long Beach, prohibits tethering, fastening, chaining or tying a dog to a stationary object for longer than three hours. The bill, signed...

Bump on back hip
Posted to: Health & Grooming
Hi all, I've noticed for the last month or so that Zoe had this little hard bump on her left hip. I have been keeping my eye on it, but over the Christmas holidays I forgot about it. Last night I noticed that it had gotten bigger, and when I put a bit of pressure on it, some white stuff and blood...

What a difference a year makes.
Posted to: News & Entertainment
Since it is the last day of 2006, I am going to post this question. What changed over the course of the year for you? I am in awe of what changes unfold over a year. 2006 gave us a LOT of changes. This time last year we were unsure as to where the Air Force was sending us next. DH was about to...

Did You Dump the Dominance Theory?
Posted to: Nutrition & Exercise
This should be in the Obedience section - could I ask a mod to move it? Sorry. Myrna Milani, DVM (Veterinary Behaviorist) says that the mark of a true leader is to control without force. She says that animals that rely on force to maintain their status end up being tossed from the gene pool, because...

Any guesses?
Posted to: Choosing A Dog
Zoe is 7 years old and was found wondering the streets so I have no idea what she is...My best guess is boston terrier x cocker spaniel. What do you think? Oh she also has somewhat short legs. Also her fur is VERY soft and she is about 27 pounds. She also has an underbite. Her ears remind me of...

Someone brought this up on another thread, so I thought I'd post the link for Chris Bach's Third Way, and see what you all think of it. Yet another way of looking at our relationships with dogs, and theirs with us. www.trainthethirdway.com

Re-training now with access to new rooms in the house.
Posted to: Training & Behavior
Rudy, our 7-month old chihuahua-terrier mix has been fully house trained for a while (with much thanks to THIS BOARD!), but he has had limited access in the house. He's only been allowed in the kitchen/nook, foyer, and mudroom area where there are hardwood floors. The rest of the house is carpeted...

Scenting and tasting?
Posted to: Nutrition & Exercise
For anyone who knows more about scent work than me, is it normal for a dog to also taste various parts of the terrain to gain information? I ask because Marlowe is forever tasting things--blades of grass, acorns, leaves, sticks. He isn't necissarily eating them, just tasting and spitting out, or...

Prong collars
Posted to: Training & Behavior
I just noticed when browsing through the forum that quite a lot of people use or advocate prong collars. I don't. I hate them and would like to melt them all down and form them into a scale statue of Sir Cliff Richard (RIP) But if anyone out there is going to use one, then I'm not going to be...
