Re-training now with access to new rooms in the house.

Re-training now with access to new rooms in the house.

Rudy, our 7-month old chihuahua-terrier mix has been fully house trained for a while (with much thanks to THIS BOARD!), but he has had limited access in the house. He's only been allowed in the kitchen/nook, foyer, and mudroom area where there are hardwood floors. The rest of the house is carpeted, and he's not been allowed in there. So today, we decided to let him have the den as well. We were very calm and let him sniff all around, and told him what a good boy he was. Within an hour, he's peed in there THREE TIMES!!! [:o] Come on!!!

Do we really have to start the whole housetraining thing all over again?!?!

    We're so distraught.

I just answered a similar question. My opinion is here: [linkhttp://forum.dog.com/asp/tm.asp?m=220244]http://forum.dog.com/asp/tm.asp?m=220244[/link]

Well thats because since he was not allowed to get into the carpeted rooms he does not consider those rooms as part of the house, he knew he was not allowed to pee in the other rooms (regardless if they have carpet or hardfloor) but he does not know that the in "new" rooms he is not allowed either, for him the carpeted rooms are like the backyard, in that sense it makes no difference, a ceiling for him does not mean anything

Is the dog neutered yet?  If not, he is old enough to have learned to "mark" his territory.  This often happens when people allow increased freedom in the home without adequate supervision, or when they move to a new residence.  Neutering helps, but so does going back to housetraining 101 with respect to the new rooms.  Don't let him out of your sight in new areas until he has "gotten it" that they are off limits as toilet areas.  BTW, your dog, at 7 months, may be in the second "chewing stage" and it's probably a good idea to keep an eye on him lest he shred something important. [;)]

Good call, Anne, three times in an hour does seem to indicate marking rather than a housetraining "accident." I don't think you have to start all over again, just start at the beginning for that one room - limit access and have him under total supervision - leashed to your body if necessary.
