    Sam has a lump..advice please

Last night my husband noticed a lump on Sam's neck.  It's really obvious so I can't imagine it's been there for long.  He doesn't seem at all bothered by it.  He yelps and squeals a lot, but that is just how Sam is, it's nothing new and doesn't seem to be associated with touching that area.  Does anyone have any ideas what this could be?  I'm attaching two photos that show the swelling.

It will be pretty difficult for us to get him to the vet right now because of the holiday and then I'm being induced for my baby on Wednesday first thing in the morning, I have no idea if they'll be able to get him in on Tuesday.

I am sure if that had been there any lenght of time, even a day, you would have noticed.   I suppose it could have been much smaller and ballooned suddenly, but I think you would have noticed even a small lump on a dog with short hair like that.  Could he have been stung by something?

Vaccine reactions and abscesses are the first things that come to mind, especially if you're positive its a new thing. It could be a swollen lymph node or something else too. You won't know until you have a vet stick a needle in it... Hopefuly the vet can see you Tuesday, if not, I guess Thursday or Friday might just have to do if your pup doesn't seem to mind the lump or feel ill.

Congratulations on the baby!! I expect photos!!!

I'd try to get him in on Tues.  Have DH call and say you're having the baby Wed and you'll be over anxious about Sam if they don't see him.  With the new baby, etc, couldn't they just please, please see him today?

The malinois had a smaller lump where Sam has his.  They asperated it with a needle and just serum came out.  They put her on antibiotics for two weeks or so and it went away.  Hopefully Sam's will be that easy.

Play that childbirth card as Agile suggests!  You will be worrying about him and you don't need that.

You'll all feel better having had him looked at and the lump aspirated!

If I was guessing, I'd say insect sting or abscess.  I hope it's minor, but you might as well play the childbirth card, since you won't be able to do it much longer. [;)]

Could be a hematoma too, you would expect an abscess to be hot and one that big would definately make you sick. Probably would ultrasound to make sure it's fluid (unless it's obvious on physical exam) and aspirate it to see what's inside. I would also watch the breathing, I always worry with big masses on the neck about tracheal compression:)

Or you could just take Sam yourself and make funny breathing noises while you wait for the vet to see you.

From the photos, it looks like an abscess.  Take him into the vet if at all possible.  They can take a sample from the swelling to determine what it is for sure.  If it is an abscess, they will probably start antibiotics, and may even lance the abscess depending on how thick the capsule is.  In any case, if this is an abscess, it should be a realitively easy fix.  Hope everything works out & congrats on the new baby.

I woke up this morning determined to get the vet to let me bring Sam in.  The lump hadn't looked to be improving yesterday.  Imagine my surprise when Sam jumps on the bed and I notice his lump is almost completely gone.  It's very small now and I never would have noticed it if I wasn't specifically looking for it.  This makes me think that perhaps it was a bug bite of some sort.  I called the vet anyway and have an appointment set for Thursday in case it's not gone by then.  I won't be the one bringing him in, but he is going to be visiting my brother who uses the same vet while I'm in the hospital and my brother agreed to take him in for me.  Thanks for all of your advice!
