Premack and Fence Fighting
Thanks to Steve White for alerting me to this cool video. It takes eight minutes to watch, so patience is a virtue... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-yOJ4s0cgCY&feature=autofb

Great puppy "training" video
I thought this video of Roni and her new puppy was very nice. It shows how easy and fun it is to "work" your puppy - it's not all about formal obedience, but just having fun and developing a bond so the puppy comes to you to work, not you struggling to hold the puppy's attention. Also...

When Taking a Class...
Do you and your dog always go to the same spot each week? If so, why? I notice a lot of my students doing this, and wonder what that phenomenon is all about.

Management - how much is too much?
In teaching dogs, it's always said that management is recommended as a way to prevent problems from occurring or from developing. I think we can all agree that this is true, to an extent. But what I am wondering is, where do you draw the line, and when does management possibly create more problems...

Help Simba stop biting?
Okay so Simba tends to bite when he gets excited or is playing, and it really can hurt. I've tried the whole high pitch yelping, he just think its a game. I've also tried turning my back and ignoring him but he continues to bite and I can only handle it for so long before he pulls on the skin...

3 months in, so far so good
So, Helo has been with me for almost 2 months now, and he's reached 12 pounds. He's a labrador/cocker spaniel mix. There are no feeding issues, and he's housebroken where he goes only on the pads. I have the okay to take him outside, so I've been taking him to the local dog park....

New member of the family is afraid of my husband
We recently (4 weeks ago) added a new member to our family: a 7 month old female maltese. We already have a 14 year old Old English Sheepdog and a 5 year old Maltese, both neutered males. I wanted another Maltese and decided that now was a good time, out old guy is sadly nearing end of life and the 5...

Zoey Training update....
Zoey has been doing great, I train her every night, along with intermittently during the day ( to & from work - leash training). She did great last night, we walked about half of our road - except at the end she got a little distracted, then went into 'lets play tug with the leash' so I stood...

The Improving Cesar Millan?
http://thedish.sitstay.com/ I just watched a recording of Cesar Millan’s the Dog Whisperer, the most recent show. It was good. The most amazing thing was what he said at the end of the show. I’m paraphrasing here but it was much like this: “I am learning and changing how I work with the dogs...

Evidence for the Use of Reward Based Training
http://www.antrozoologisenteret.no/artikler/art_training_methods.pdf And, for those of you who wonder why I am so vehement in my defense of reward based training, I think Donna said it better here: http://www.thepryorfoundation.org/dufford.html There's always this assumption on the part of so called...

Just call me stupid.......
Yep, that's me, stupid. I'm one of those stupid people who brought a puppy home without researching the breed first. Dumb, dumb, dumb... We had to have our 12 yr. old lab put down back in December because of paralysis and nerve damage in his legs. We knew we'd want a new dog eventually...

Snapping at Owners
We have an 8 year old mixed male lab, Bullwinkle who has a problem of giving a warning growl, snapping and occasionally making contact with his teeth (but never biting down) when we touch him. He is affectionate and attached to my wife and virtually never leaves her side but when she goes to pet him...

Jumping when being walked
Hey guys! So for the most part Simba is good on the leash, however lately he's been starting to jump on whoever is walking him and no matter how many times we say off he doesn't listen. I figure this is him either just over excited or testing our boundaries, but how do I get him to stop? I do...

Crabby behavior suggestions
Hi Everyone, Our dog is a 19 pound terrier mix, a rescue, almost three, and we have had him for almost two years. If we are having a party, he is OK for even a couple hours, then as the evening goes on, he will still want to be with the group, snuggle in a corner, but if someone tries to touch him, he...

Positive Resources
A FB friend of mine posted this page as a positive training resource. If you need a citation, or you use positive training and want to have a look at some of the science behind the method, it's a nice grouping of links to articles and studies all in the same place. http://web.me.com/support.notation...

Dog-dolphin analogy
Some people out there think that if we can teach a dolphin to do something without the use of force then why can not do that with our dogs. Well besides of the fact that dogs are not dolphins (that you cant put a leash on a dolphin), and even when dogs are closer to wolves than dolphins the dog-wolf...

Thoughts on training when physical limitations are present
I have been dealing with a bad back for decades, but in the past year it has become very problematic. I have always had to be careful not to spasm my back doing certain task, but now, just about anything can spasm it into immobility it seems. I have had at least a half dozen episodes where I literally...

Fear of children
I have a Newfie. He is currently around 20 months old, has been neutered. From a training and socialization in different environments point of view, he is very good...except with children. We don't have children so we understand we need to socialize him with kids. Since he first got home around...

Guess who's staying around for a while
"Soon, more humans will be able to learn from him. This summer, after a special 100th episode (and a third Emmy nomination for Mr. Millan), the National Geographic Channel struck a deal with Fox to syndicate “Dog Whisperer” next fall. That means 50 million or so of the nation’s 120 million households...
