    Jumping when being walked

Hey guys! So for the most part Simba is good on the leash, however lately he's been starting to jump on whoever is walking him and no matter how many times we say off he doesn't listen. I figure this is him either just over excited or testing our boundaries, but how do I get him to stop? I do exercise him and keep him stimulated throughout the day, so it's not where he gets no exercise and is so wound up. Has this happened to anyone else? I would love it if you guys could give me some tips because it's really starting to annoy me.

My gal, a Great Dane, was like that too -- she was just so happy to go for a walk, nothing could contain her excitement.  It took awhile but with the typical 'you-don't-get-what-you-want until-you-sit' -- she has learned to contain herself.  Now as soon as she sees the leash, although she is still 'so excited' on the inside, she sits and  waits for me to put the leash on -- then she must sit on the deck until I open the gate -- then she must sit as soon as we get to the sidewalk while I close the gate behind me.  Yes, it's boring as all heck, but it is the only way I could get her to focus.  When you are first training her to sit for all these steps, it is easier to reward her with a treat in addition to getting her way (the leash, and subsequent walk) -- soon, she'll be sitting even before you say the word.  Conversely, when she did not sit at the command, then I show her the leash and say 'we're going back in' -- and go back in the house and put the leash back on the holder.  I would then try again about 5 to 10 minutes later so she could remember the association of 'no sit - no walk'.  On most days, after the first 'rejection' she was more than willing to comply the next time.  :-) Good luck!

Zoey does this almost every single day in the morning, it's jumping up & leash tuggy time. I do the same thing - Just stop & not going anywhere until she sits. She'll have a couple more outbursts in the beginning, but I just wait for her to sit again, then thats pretty much it for the day - on our walks later she doesnt' really try it.

Its also how i taught her loose leash walking - tight leash = going nowhere, literally.

I will try this! I should also add that he also likes to bite. Not in a mean way but playfully he'll tug on our sleeves and such. I guess he's just excited but he needs to stop because it can really hurt sometimes haha.

Puppies want attention whether its positive or negative. By you making things boring, he should catch on quick.

thats how i got zoey to not be mouthy, as soon as she brings teeth to the party, party is over.

When he jumps, turn your back on him and then do the other stuff.  No comment, no eye contact, nothing when he jumps, just turn away from him.

When i walk a dog that does not agree that he is not allowed to pull anymore he starts jumping like a fish outside the water. I only lift my arm straight to the side every time he jumps and i let him jump as much as he wants without stop walking. Every single time the dog will get tired first from all that jumping vs me lifting my arm, usually takes less than 5 minutes

I will turn my back but he just continues. I do tell him to stop so I'll just make no comments.

A little update. I took Simba out for a potty break tonight and he started. So I turned my back to him and ignored him. He stopped and sat and I told him 'good bye' when he was calm. Though I had to ignore him again when he tried it again.

Many times the jumping is for attention.  If he doesn't get that attention, why bother.  When you react, he's getting attention, which teaches him that the behavior works.

    Good job.

That is true. So I should still praise him when he stops and sits right?

When zoey stops & sits that means we get to walk again!
