    Zoey Training update....

Zoey has been doing great, I train her every night, along with intermittently during the day ( to & from work - leash training). She did great last night, we walked about half of our road - except at the end she got a little distracted, then went into 'lets play tug with the leash' so I stood there until she stopped. lol. I also got her to play in puddle and touch two road cones.  A couple cars went by, but luckily where we were I was able to take her further from the road, lessening her reaction. ( trying to set her up for success).

Last night's training was fun, really mixed it up. worked on stay on the mat, then played with the cat toy, then stay on the mat again, then played fetch, then the touch it game. I think she really enjoyed it.

Also a note on teaching stay, and it's funny cuz it has almost nothing to do with the dog - this is a handler issue. LOL. so I started adding distractions to her stays as well as duration. jump up and down, good, hop on one foot, good, slide across the kitchen floor in my socks, good. run across the floor ( this is her weakness, but she got better), ok so here's the tip, when teaching your dog stay on the mat while you proceed to run across the floor - MAKE SURE YOUR TREAT BAG IS CLOSED!! HAHA!!

I inadvertently rewarded her for leaving her stay when I ran across the kitchen spilling treats all over the place!

Another tip, make sure your treat bag is where NO other dogs can get them, twice I've zoned out and left it on the coffee table, only to come back from taking Zoey out to go potty, to find Amber gorging herself on tasty tasty treats ( yes standing on the coffee table). *smack yourself over the head with the treat bag*

big step forward this morning, as we're walking to work my boss' big diesel truck is idling in the driveway. Zoey was doing great on the walk over, so I slowly approached the truck, then I rewarded her for being calm and curious around the truck. not rewarding any fearful behavior - which there wasn't much. I asked her to touch the truck, C/T, we walked all around the truck and every time she focused on me she got a click. So I thought that was a good thing. Now to work on the ones that are moving.

I've found the faster the car is moving, the more reactive she is. Almost thinking about making a sign that says 'please slow down, puppy training in progress' LOL yes the crazy lady training her dog ALL of the time. LOL

another tip - if you put treats in your sweatshirt pocket, makes sure the dogs can't get to that sweatshirt when you're not wearing it. lol. I kept putting my clicker in my pocket, then it would fall out, after 3x I was like what the heck!!?! flipped the bottom of my sweatshirt inside out, there was a big hole in the bottom, someone with little razor teeth 'modified' my hoody!! LOL

I can totally relate to you since we're both training puppies! :D  Glad to hear she's doing well! Haha oh god I shouldn't have laughed at the treats spilling everywhere but I couldn't help it hehe.

Ugh, Simba has modified a lot of my clothing too. I feel for ya hun.

I updated Zoey's car project in the other section - behaviour problems. I'm seeing a huge leap in progress in that area.

As far as walking goes, she's getting it! I just took her on a good 15 min LOOSE leash walk! granted we walk every day multiple times ( short walks) but this was like 15 min solid of loose leash, it was awesome!! Lots of looking at me and staying right next to me. I started with loose leash only, now I'm shaping her more towards walking next to me.

She looked like she was really enjoying herself, panting a bit ( its a little warm today), ears in 'racing' position, trotting along with me. I can walk at a good brisk walk now with out her getting over excited. i think it's good for me & her LOL, mostly me though.

Awesome! Zoey just had some success learning to not bark/attack the vacuum cleaner and not to attack the broom!! I made a vid of it too!

    she learns so fast!

Hey!  Funny I am also Training my puppy Zoey, a Brittany.  What kind is yours?  My Zoey is also doing great.  It took only a couple of weeks (she is 12 now) to teach her sit, lay down, play dead, stay, leave it, and to even ring a bell when she wants to go out.

She is not 100% on any of them yet, but if I have a treat in my hand the success rate soars.  I am also clicker training along with little bacon flavored puppy training treats.  Maybe naming the puppies Zoey instantly turns them into little Einsteins lol :)

It's so nice to read a success story. AND you made me laugh out loud!  Big Smile

zoey did great at puppy class last night, only barked a few times in the beginning - that whole pre class excitement period where all the puppies are going bonkers doesn't really happen anymore. She did great for her exercises. I was thinking about leaving before the puppy play time, but decided to stay as soon as I saw her buddy Digby ( catahoula pup) come in. He's shy enough that he doesn't trigger any weird stuff outta her. Oddly enough there was another pup in our pen who would not calm down, but eventually zoey even got to sniff that pup without any bad stuff!! I dont let her meet long, bout 3 seconds maximum then I tell her 'yes' and she gets a treat. I was constantly treating her around the other pups so that she has a good association with other dogs even if she isn't interacting with them.

So we had lots of good sniffs with Digby, the other pup and a little pup on the other side of the fence. I was very proud of her, even though she was never let off leash. I got good at communicating towards another owner letting them know that I'm feeling crowded & they need to back their pup off.

so pretty happy I stuck around.

this saturday, since she has all her shots now, I took her shopping with me, ran in & got some stuff real quick ( potting soil for seedlings! yay), and came back out & got Zoey.  We probably spent 1.5 to 2 hours walking around. She got to see people walking around, shopping carts, and old man walking a bicycle, kids, cars, and new environments - trees, grass, shrubs that she doesn't usually see. She did great! She only had a meltdown when I first got her out of the car, some people were walking into a store & she was barking like crazy at them.

She did really good seeing other dogs being walked and seeing two dogs in a car that were barking like crazy at her, she didn't really bark a couple of small woofs, and just looked at them. She also saw a dog in the back of a truck & had no bad reactions, even layed down and ignored him at one point. With the kids, she LOVES them. Hard to get the kids to understand they can't pet her unless all her feet are on the ground! lol. She did really good though! Met lots of people - although it drives me nuts when someone deliberately walks within leash length and baby talks to her as they're walking by! ( but dont want to pet her)  its almost like teasing her to me. Got a nice compliment on her coloring from an older gentleman, and he actually wanted to pet her. I thought it was nice.

She was pooped and slept all the way home ( a whole 5 minutes lol). Had a great puppy/doggie evening later on. She lost a tooth & I got some cute video of her playing with her ice cube. She was really good though, just happy as a clam to follow me around the house. Also getting better with not harassing kit tay tay so much. She hated the fan that was drying some mud in the newly drywalled bathroom though, she'd veer off from following me to go bark at it. lol then come right back.

Thats great! Sounds like your Zoey is doing well.  My Zoey is also doing pretty well.  I have changed her from barking wildly at strangers, to crying to meet them.  She absolutely loves people now.  Here is a video of her doing the Bang trick, took this around 3 1/2 months.

thats really cute, I'd like to teach my zoey that trick!

Aw I'm glad to hear she's doing good! Haha puppies and kids they just go together, even if puppies don't understand they can't jump on someone so small especially! Luckily Simba hasn't done that so far. :P

I think I need to see this video! And yay for puppies losing their teeth! Have you gotten to save any so far?

OMG it's windy today which means anything moving in the wind is SCARY!! as far as Zoey's concerned!!

I just spent like ten minutes getting her to calm down over a garbage can that was laying on it's side ( from being blown over). scary scary!! AHHHH@@

Aw poor baby. :( Simba actually got scared two times today. Once over a truck that was rattling a little and the second time over a school bus when it was starting to move again after stopping to let kids off. What is this? Scare the puppy day? :P
