An alternative to revolution?

So far, we've been using Revolution to stave off ticks, fleas, heartworm, etc. It's been fine, so far, but I am beginning to feel uncomfortable with the fact that it, in essence, makes the dog's blood toxic to said parasites. Is that not harmful for the dog, as well?

My youngest Tzu, Nemo had been sick, and had lost some weight. So vet told me to fatten him up. Gave me advice to use canned food. He did gain the weight, but so did my other Tzu in the process.
