Hand Commands Vs. Verbal Commands
I've been trying to teach my border collie/lab mix dog, Walker, some cool little tricks. The past few days, we worked on having him spin, but he'll only do it if i do the motion with my hand around him. I started off by making him sit, then bringing a treat around him, making him do a 360...

How would you train your puppy to be good around kids?
Hey guys. Shock shock, yet another question. :P I've been wondering about how to get Simba used to kids. I don't have any that live in the house, but I think it'd be a good idea to have him socialize with kids. The only thing is, is that he's a very young pup who likes to jump and nip...

Positively New Year!
This is a cute video - some of the dogs belong to Dee Ganley who trains in NH, an easy drive away from me (I've met Dazzle, the blue merle, and she's an awesome Aussie). If any of you get to do any classes or seminars with Dee, she is so very nice and easy to work with. http://www.youtube.com...

I have never owned a dog and sadly probably never will. BUT: I enjoy walking my kids' toutor's dog about once a week when we're there. I have an hour I can pretend he's all mine! :) I started walking him last early spring, with a few weeks off during summer and somewhat sporadic. He does...

Sharing toys.
So when I brought Finn home, one of my main concerns was to prevent any bahavioral issues with toys and food among the dogs. At first Finn had a slight problem regarding food and he would growl when other dogs would come near him when he ate or even if he was getting treats. However, when we started...

Curiuos Behaviours
Well Buddy (2 yr old rescue) has been here for almost 3 months now. He is really a great dog! There are a few behaviours that I am curious about however and maybe someone can shed some light or at least give me an educated guess. We have no history on this dog. The one I am a little concerned about is...

Trouble with training - pls help!
My 11 month-old Great Dane has always had what I think is called "leash aggression" (she just wants to meet another dog -- with a compulsion! absolutely no aggression, however -- just desperately wants to meet and greet). She has gone through 3 'puppy' classes and all of the trainers...

Great Site for Clicker Hints
I like this one even better than clickerlessons, because it has great videos. She even posts behavior mod vids for things like teaching your dog not to bark and keeping dogs from herding the vacuum: http://www.dogmantics.com/Dogmantics/Home.html

Potty Training Help
Hi! I'm a proud new mama of a 7 week old puggle/shephard mix. I am a stay at home mother so I was wondering when it comes to potty training, do I need to train on papers first or can I start directly with going outside? Any thoughts on that, or any tips or advice on potty training such a young little...

Derailing habitual over-excitement
My poor partner is going through major work stress at the moment, and when he comes home it seems to be a cue to Erik that it's time to get very excited and bark at us for the next 2 or 3 hours. It's really bizarre to me, as I come home around 5-6pm and he's very excited, but makes hardly...

GoldensAreTheBest
I really don't think I'm ever going to like my dads dog
So today another fight broke out between my dads dog and one of mine. He has a GSD and I have two Goldens. I raised my older golden an his GSD so I know neither of them were abused as they were both puppies when we got them but we got them two years apart. My dad however after two years of only petting...

How do you do it?!
Training seems to be a very popular topic amongst many animal owners. My question is- How does everybody correct (rather than using the term punish) when their dogs have an accident? Or if they do not come when called? OR any other scenario people may have... I love to learn and see other peoples views...

Accomplishments
I am proud of Zeke and wanted to let everyone know too. I have successfully trained him to Sit Shake Lay down High Five Load/unload out of the car on command. Although, my shake and high five are very similar. I raise my hand a little bit higher and position my arm & hand more straight when I am...

Littermate? Pack leader?
Fiance and I were talking about Maggie's sleeping habits. When he is out of town, Maggie will sleep with me on the bed. If fiance is home, or napping by himself, she will sleep on her doggy bed which is in the bedroom, but never on our bed. I was joking with him and said it was probably because he...

Fence Fighting/Constant Barking
My parents dog is driving me CRAZY!!! He's a MAJOR fence fighter and I have no idea how to stop him. He barks- extremely loudly- at people, cars, dogs, *anything* that's going by the fence in the back yard. It doesn't help that my parents live on a very busy street. He is, a very friendly...

Sally's New Trainer....
As some of you know, Sally the pibble mix has some dog issues. I won't go into the full history (although i will be happy to answer any questions), but we have tried various methods to address what basically is reactivity. We have done prong collar corrects, which made things worse if anything, and...

Establishing operations
Someone pointed out to me that drive is an establishing operation. This is described as something that influences operant responding by altering the reinforcing effectiveness of consequences and changing the frequency of behaviour that has been reinforced by those consequences in the past. Since learning...

Thoughts on this video?
I finally got a video of Bailey and one of the ferrets "interacting" with eachother. Not sure what to make of it.. His normal behavior with them is to completly ignoor them. He wants nothing to do with them most of the time. And when either of them comes near him, he will jump up and run away...
