I don't like the pedigree kibble, the canned is not so bad.  In my opinion there are definitely better, more digestible diets out there - they would cost more, but you would feed him LESS, so the cost would be comparable.  It would improve his general health and I would bet he would produce less waste too.

Jack is a cutie.  I'm partial to scruffy terriers. :)  Here's a site that has lots of good info about dog food.  I do think your dog would benefit from a better food but I don't think it has a thing to do with his eliminating in the house when you leave.  If possible, set up a video recorder to see how he acts when you leave him alone.  The constant barking in conjunction with eliminating indoors sounds like SA to me, fairly mild.  It's not that hard to overcome if you are willing to devote some time to the project.  Patricia McConnell has a booklet "I'll be Home Soon" devoted to the subject.  It's very inexpensive here in the States.  Good luck and keep us posted and supplied with pictures.  :)

Pedigree isn't something that I would feed, however the formulation may be different in your country.  Pedigree here is chock full of grains, animal byproducts, artifical colors, preservatives and a whole lot of stuff I consider "nasty"!  I can't make suggestions because I'm not sure what's available there.  The link Jackie gave you is excellent though and will give you a good start place!

I don't think that the diet is causing the messing in the house either, but I do think that if he has a better diet and is pooping LESS, then there will logically be less cases where he does it indoors.... It might just help a little with the retraining process, but at the very least, having less poop to clean up would surely be a good thing!

Another point - how is he fed?  Does he get set meals or is he free-fed?  This can also make a difference to the poop-schedule....
