I am proud of Zeke and wanted to let everyone know too. I have successfully trained him to

    • Sit
    • Shake
    • Lay down
    • High Five
    • Load/unload out of the car on command.
Although, my shake and high five are very similar. I raise my hand a little bit higher and position my arm & hand more straight when I am doing the high five- which he does automatically raise his paw higher also. I'm proud though!

Wooo hoooo! High Five is one of Ari's favorites to do. Unfortunately, it led to the unintended behavior of hitting us when she wants something Stick out tongueConfused

I love when it finally clicks for the dog and how happy they are to do what you asked!

Ya thats why I'm not teaching Zoey it, one of my other dogs ( and my friends 2 dogs) both shake, and end up pawing you to death begging for attention. lol. I'm noticing Zoey is relying more on hand signals than the vocal command ( except for sit)

     WTG Zeke!!

    How old is he?

Zeke just turned Seven months old on January 2, 2010. However, he has gradually learned all these tricks since he was eight weeks old. When I brought him home we practiced sit for a day or so. He picked that up very fast & I continued on with shake. After a few days & rewarding he learned shake. So by the time he was nine weeks old he knew how to do sit & shake on command. Puppies learn and keep things in their memory through repetition. So throughout him being nine weeks old until he was about four months old we continued practicing sit & shake. Around the four month mark he started going bye-bye a lot. Teaching him to get in/out of the vehicles was not really focused on- he just listened to me saying get in/get out and it stuck well. After that I decided after reading a magazine that perhaps teaching him to high five would be fun. So we focused on that for a few days- which is still a bit rusty because I am not sure he really distinguishes between shake & high five. Although through time he will understand with, of course- repetition. Laying down on command was also another thing I did not really focus on too much. I would tell him to lay and- more or less help him lay down when saying the command. Then a few days ago I said lay down- testing his knowledge more or less and he laid down. One thing about owning a Collie is that he has proved all the positive comments right. Everybody I spoke to said that Collies did not really need a whole lot of training that they mainly pick commands up on their own. He has done that on a lot of his "tricks". He also goes to his crate on command- another thing I did not necessarily "train" him to do. He picked it up through me bringing him to his crate and saying "get in". I suppose it is easy for him to pick up on things- for 1. I talk a lot to my dog. I speak to my dog about everything- when he's good, when he needs to do something (EX: Whenever he needs to get in/out of the car, go to his crate, etc), or just to talk. So actually picks up a lot of my words. I feel privileged to have a dog be so well behaved & learn so easily.

I understand what you mean. Zeke loves getting rewards so in his mind if he sits & shakes = he gets a reward. : )
