Incessant Paw Licking
Just before going on vacation a year ago, our dog Lucky (a German Shepard/Lab mix) seemed to be focused on his paws. They were slightly irritated and he was licking them now and then but not enough to concern us. We left him with our dogsitter and returned a week later to find that the irritation had...

blanket removing
My dog is another dog that at times will remove all the blankets from my bed. He either throws them all off on the floor or he piles them all on top of my pillows in a big bundle. The other night he had them all twisted in a big ball on the middle of the bed. A few times he has chewed holes in them....

Can you explain this weird behavior?
Two of our former fosters that had been adopted out together were coming back for a visit. So DH, DD and myself went to the adoption event to see them. Dakota had been maybe 9 months old when he was adopted but spent the previous 3 months or so with me. Lola was 2 years old and had been with me for a...

What do you see in this video (CoBuHe)
I took this video yesterday; I had just brought in some new toys. The conversation these two are having is interesting to me. I'd be curious what the trainers/behaviorists see? [URL=http://s148.photobucket.com/albums/s29/barhenslee/?action=view¤t=100_1728.flv][IMG]http://i148.photobucket...

Am I Working This Dog Too Hard?
My husband thinks that I am working Maya too hard. She is a 1 yr old Husky mix - possibly mixed with Great Pyrenees. Our normal day looks like this: 1 hour walk - 1/3 practicing heel, 2/3 on a flexi-leash doing doggie stuff (the rules are that she walks beside me if anyone else is around, and must give...

Good chew toy for aggressive chewer?
Our 1 yr old Boglan (half BostonTerrier/half Beagle) loves to chew. I stopped buying raw hide when I was told they're bad for his digestive track. But anything else he pretty much can destroy in 10 min.; we've had a couple toys that lasted a few days, like the black rubber toy tires. I don't...

Someone watch and tell me what this behavior is.
When Finn and Max play Benny barks at them almost constantly. If I pick him up he is calmer, but still wants to bark. When I first got Finn, Benny and Finn would play all the time and now that rarely happens. Now it is play between Max and Finn and Benny barks at them. What does that mean? Is that just...

Need some tips for dealing with ACD pup
I have a 9 month old male Australian Cattle Dog pup. He has always attempted to establish his dominance in our house (I'm 23 and live with my parents). I got him at 12 weeks and have always tried to keep the consistency as far as his behavior - he knows sit, down, I don't let him beg, etc. ...

Give me some quick ideas on behaviors to shape
I'm using my dogs in a little experiment. I need some ideas on things to shape. No luring or targeting for this one. I have already taught Luke to wave, but I wasn't thinking of this to take data when I did it. I'd like to have a comparison of the number of trials it takes him to learn the...

Siege at Druid Peak: Wolves, Social Networks, & Feedback Mechanisms
Last year PBS ran a documentary about the wolves in Yellowstone. In the latter part of the film something very strange happened. A group of mysterious black wolves came from some unknown location outside the park, and set up a siege, surrounding several dens where females from one of the park's relocated...

imitative behavior in dogs?
Just wondering, if anyone knows of any documented cases of imitative behavior in dogs? In lieu of, or in addition to documented cases, anecdotes would be interesting as well. I'm wondering because, we have a new little girl, 8 weeks old, golden retrieverish looking, who seems to be doing some imitation...

Regaining confidence (kpwlee)
OK it appears that Bugsy has lost a lot of confidence in this whole bad knee situation (and may be it was already sliding). He has been acting differently around dogs he knows, barked at a human on a walk the other day, and just now a GR was jogging with their owner and he freaked. Low huge bark and...

puppy training question...
So i've primarily started to use positive reinforcement with Zoey. I'm trying to do 'real clicker' training with her, rather than just training with a clicker. So far she's understanding alot. She's getting good at the 'touch it' game, and that'll transfer over to...

Save my Christmas tree ornaments
So what can I put on my Christmas tree and ornaments to keep my 7 month old puppy from trying to steal them and eat them? Any homemade solutions that will make him spit it out once he tastes it? I'm very close to having a tree decorated from about 3 feet and up.

The Real Definition...
...of a punishment or a reinforcment is what effect it has on behavior (and an aversive stimulus is a slightly different concept)! Here's a nice article by Karen Pryor that explains the scientific concept in simple terms: http://www.clickertraining.com/node/2451
