    puppy training question...

So i've primarily started to use positive reinforcement with Zoey. I'm trying to do 'real clicker' training with her, rather than just training with a clicker. So far she's understanding alot. She's getting good at the 'touch it' game, and that'll transfer over to the 'heel' position. On walks I've been using a 'lets go command' and when she comes back in my direction she gets a click. Teaching her that a tight leash means no more forward motion, you have to come back. She's doing ok on that. she has her good days and her bad days. she gets to practice that it least 6 times a day when i'm walking to and from work.  When I feel like she isn't focusing ( i.e. too distracted) I just pick her up and carry her the rest of the way.

one thing I've noticed is she's afraid of cars ( natural for being a puppy dumped in the road). First it was 'oh god a car!' and she would try to hide. But in the last few days its turned into  hide first , then after the cars go by try and chase it & bark like crazy. I'm not really sure how to get her ok with cars. I've taught her a 'look at me' command but she's too distracted while we're outside. She does pretty well in the house.

In the house when she's doing bad things ( so far nothing huge since she's usually playing with Bella) like jumping on the couch - I just remove her ( if i have my clicker on me I'll tell her 'off' and she'll get off). So i'm just trying to ignore the bad behaviors, if she starts nipping I ignore her. So far that's worked pretty well. when she goes crazy and bites my jeans or robe I tell her 'drop it' and she usually does.

Also how can I exercise her more? So far she's not totally interested in the tennis ball for it to be a game we can play to wear her out. And since we're still working on the walks its hard to get an extended walk. I guess my take on it is, I want her to walk how I want from day 1, I don't want to start walking her where she thinks she can drag me down the road just to wear her out a bit.  She does get on the treadmill no problem, but then again she's getting rewarded for walking on it ( not such a bad thing I guess, I just have to make her work just a bit harder for the next treat).

Outside in the front yard there are just as many distractions as there are on the walk ( cars going by, she can hear the freeway), and while the other dogs are walking around having a good time she'll run out to me for a second then turn around and run back to the front door & just wait there. She's not too 'interested' in playing outside.

I tried running around with her a bit while on the leash, but it sends her into psycho puppy mode grabbing the leash and pulling then starting to attack/bite my legs/pants. So I'm thinking that's not quite the game I wanna play LOL  I do have books on the way. This is all new to me, I used to do stuff more old school - and I'm not 100% happy the way Bella turned out, and I want Zoey to be a good pup. ( I'm also trying to retrain the other dogs with more positive techniques).

Zoey does understand the NILF stuff, she always sits before coming in, sits for dinner ( in her crate, she loves her crate), pretty much has to sit to do/get anything. House training is going well, she's actually walking over to the door now when she has to go out.

She does want to try to get the chickens - she managed to slip by me one time when i went on the patio to grab something ( my fault) and I thought I had closed the door enough. she chased that poor chicken around the yard and into the field, but eventually came to my recall ( she got rewarded, not scolded). chicken was fine lol, I think she just wanted to chase that crazy thing, not necessarily kill it.

So any suggestions of any of it? LOL

An easy way to increase exercise is to feed out of a treat dispensing toy.  Our puppy eats her kibble meal out of either a tug a jug or buster cube.  She's so focused during meal time, that once she's done, she needs a nap!

I'm not a fan of forcing exercise on young puppies, so I skip runs on leash, but if the pup wants to run alongside of me, off leash, then I let them come along.  We do short hikes a lot because we have some nice off leash hiking trails close.  We usually only go about a half mile, but between that & the mandatory exploring, she's pooped.  Socialization trips also seem to tire our girl out.  She has a great sit, & she's learned that if she wants to meet someone new, then she has to sit.  She is forever sitting her butt down in hopes that she'll get attention out of the deal.

For training "off" I use a toy.  When Cher hops up on the couch without an invitation, I show her the toy, tell her off & toss the toy accross the floor.  As soon as her feet hit the floor, I click & she gets her toy as a treat.  I also use this method to teach off when she's trying to jump up on me.

I have found that Cher wants to bite, & nip at us when she's tired.  For me, it's easiest to put her in her crate as soon as the nipping begins.  Just something to think about.

she does eat almost all of her meals outta her treat toys. she really likes them.

for the running i never really asked her to run before, she was enjoying it - but went into crazy puppy mode.  Luckily Bella gets to wear her out the most. I was just curious if there was anything else I could do to help tire her out LOL.

tonight I had my Bf drive by VERY slowly in his car, she did pretty good, i just kept asking her for the 'look at me' cue. she did better than when people go blasting by.   Just dont want her to turn into a car crazy little dog.

I probably agree with the 'tired puppy'=nippy puppy. grouchy little butts. I'll try putting her in for a nap when she gets into that stage.

I guess I 'll have to just work on her fetch. I tell ya Bella finally understands fetch with the clicker/positive training. I actually got here to bring the frisbee back to me about 6 times, that was a first!!

ohya, zoey doesn't run on the treadmill, she walks only. none of my dogs run on it. the speed control is too wacky & freaks them out.

She sounds like she's doing a pretty good job there. Another thing you can do in order to wear her out a bit is to just train some tricks. If you search the forum, there are probably some posts about free shaping, which might also be something to do. So, you can have your puppy earn little pieces of food for doing little tricks. The thinking involved in doing it can be tiring for a dog. You can also teach tricks that are cute, but are incomatible with something annoying, or as an alternative to something annoying. Yesterday, I taught my dog to wave when I say hi to him. Then I'll work on him waving to other people when they say hi to him. He usually does sit to meet someone, but say that this were a problem, it would be a pretty cute replacement for jumping on people.

Zoey did alot better on her walk last night & this morning. This morning I tied the leash to my belt, just so i would resist the urge to pull or correct her. She did great. at work she found a tennis ball, so I took the opportunity to play fetch with her, she consistently brought it back about 15x. So I think thats great.

Played lots of games with her last night - walking on the treadmill, I was straddling it, and she got rewarded when she stayed between my legs. Then I tried the same thing on the ground, trying to get her to 'touch' my hand by walking up between my legs ( someone said that helps transfer over to heel easily). She kinda got it. Then I was playing fetch with everyone, Bella loved it, she really understands it now when she gets a goody ( dog kibble LOL) when she brings it back.

This morning we're also working on getting her not to eat her bed. Every time she chews on it the bed goes on 'time out' LOL she's being a real butt about it though. Last night I could hear her slowly shredding her blanket in her crate - for about 30 minutes. I didn't do anything about it though.

If you don't have it yet, you might want to consider "Clicker Training for Obedience" by Morgan Spector.

You may already be doing this but if you want to build a strong desire to retrieve, always stop before she does.  Leave her wanting more. :)

I don't expect pups to NOT chew.  Especially something soft like a bed or blanket.  I don't put anything in puppy crates other than a puppy safe chew toy. When I think they are old enough and have finished teething, I put an old towel in to test and if that remains intact, they get a dog bed.

good point, i think i forgot, I was having too much fun LOL.

I'll also look into that book, I have two books on the way, also ordered a noise CD because I played a vid on youtube that had a dog bark in it & she started freaking out LOL.

Might help with my other dogs too ( hehe good use for those outdoor speakers that are close to the dog run - might even desensitize the donks too!!)

thats a great idea for the dog bed thing. Wish I would've done that with Bella, had many many many tore up dog beds, I actually just stopped buying them at one point because I knew she'd eat/kill them.

    I just got it!

I also got 'getting started with clicker training' read that in a day. Happy to see that the Spector book is HUGE, can't wait to get through it!

an update - after bringing Bella with me to work yesterday I think it helped Zoey a bit, she doesn't seem as crazy when a car goes by. and she's getting REALLY good at loose leash walking, we're actually getting somewhere!! LOL
