Littermate? Pack leader?

    Littermate? Pack leader?

Fiance and I were talking about Maggie's sleeping habits.  When he is out of town, Maggie will sleep with me on the bed.  If fiance is home, or napping by himself, she will sleep on her doggy bed which is in the bedroom, but never on our bed.  I was joking with him and said it was probably because he snores too loudly.  He came back with "no, its because she sees you as a littermate, and me as a pack leader, so she doesn't respect you enough to let you sleep on the 'prime spot'"  That made me wonder...why DOES she only sleep with me?  When I tell her to do something, she does it. (She's getting very good at the "leave it" and "drop it" commands)  But at the same time, I do wrestle/play/run around with her more than fiance and I'm more affectionate....c'mon...its hard NOT to mooch that mowhawk!  Why do you guys think she only sleeps with me?

I don't think it has to be a pack leader issue.  I am very clearly the pack leader of all my dogs.  Coke sleeps with me all the time, but doesn't always sleep with DH even though DH is more like a dog than a pack leader as far as where he fits in.

Agree that this might not be about leadership either. It might be an issue of normal human male-female behavior. Some dogs feel more intimidated (i'm not saying this is your case but helps to illustrate the point) towards male humans due to the way they naturally conduct themselves (more forward, assertive, intimidating).

Your dog might feel actually more comfortable with you than with your fiance and rathers your company on the bed since you might be a more "relaxed" person and not as "intimidating" as your fiance

Thanks. That actually makes a lot of sense.  Fiance is a federal agent, so he has to be more intimidating...heck, the first time he picked me up for a date straight from work, I was a little nervous (think suit, ear piece, sunglasses, badge, gun,handcuffs...but..oh, my, the suit...Big Smile) So, ahem..anyways...I can see Maggie seeing him as intimidating.

I think dogs can also just prefer one's company.  Even though I'm the "pack leader" does not mean I am a tyrant.  All of my dogs prefer my company.  I don't always interact with them the same way as DH, and even though I do more discipline and training, I also do most of the feeding, taking the dogs fun places, and letting them outside to potty and play.  They might prefer me because I sit/lie still on the bed, or because I'm the hand that feeds them, or maybe they just like me better :)

For one reason or another, sleeping on her own bed when the fiance is around, is more comfortable. And when he is not around, sleeping with you is more comfortable... both physically and mentally. It's possible she prefers your company more than your fiance, or maybe she doesn't feel like she has enough space on the bed when there are two people in it.

I don't think it has anything to do with leadership or status. She just prefers sleeping on her bed than sleeping with your fiance.

Who says pack leaders can't be snuggle buddies too?  The dog comes up on the bed with you because it's rewarding.  Likely, you enjoy it and encourage it.  She doesn't get up on the bed with your SO because he is neutral (does not encourage) or actually discourages it; either because of the pack leader thing or inadvertantly, by wriggling/snoring/not being a considerate snuggle buddy for a dawg.

Could be that your fiance made it quite clear to Maggie from the start that she is not welcome on the bed when he went to take a nap, etc. You,  on the other hand, have let her know 'it's ok' -- I'd say Maggie is quite a smart dog and respects both of your wishes!  She loves you both and wants to please you anyway she can -- can't ask for anything better than that!
