Does this count as a 'poisoned cue'?
You know, the typical verbal repetition of the cue word such as: "Sit... sit.... SIT!" So now, the dog doesn't sit immediately. Is this poisoning, and requires one to change the cue and start over again? Or can that be remedied if you just retrain? Or is it only cue poisoning when you admonish...

Barking ALL through the night..
We've recently moved into a new apartment. We've been here for about 3 weeks now. The first week it was good.. the dogs didn't really bark much or behave badly. Gradually though, things have gotten worse. The people who live upstairs have dogs ..so if Chico even hears them a tiny bit, he goes...

Yappy Hour Philosophy
Yappy Hour is FUN with a capital F, and just one way our clients spend time with their dogs - of course, most weeks we don't dress up. This video is from our Howl-O-Ween celebration, and the star is Lucy, who won second prize for her trick/costume combo. As you can see, all her friends are stopping...

CET Trainers?
Canadian dog trainer, Brad Pattison, has a training school that costs about $6000, I believe, to attend, and which graduates trainers with the designation C.E.T. According to one of his recent Facebook announcements, he is planning to expand those schools into the United States. He is the same guy whose...

post neuter aggression?
OK a while back I found a dog and was able to get him into a rescue and then into a foster home. The foster was going to adopt him except..........after stopping the pain meds post neuter he has become aggressive (her term, to me it sounds like reactivity) towards other dogs. He has bitten her when she...

Is crate training cruel?
About 6 months ago I got a golden retriever puppy. The kids and I loved it, but we were having a TERRIBLE time training it. I read some books and got some advice from friends but nothing seemed to work. I finally tried the 'crate' method and it seems to be working quite well for me. Has anyone...

Toward a Unified Dog Theory: Understanding Pattern Recognition
I was putting the finishing touches on my latest article when I saw SpiritDogs' news that Ian Dunbar is now "collaborating" with Cesar Millan. Something must be in the air. " Toward a Unified Dog Theory: Understanding Pattern Recognition : Is Learning Shaped By Consequences or By Detecting...

Haven't really asked any questions lately, which is a good thing I suppose. :P Simba's a LOT better now. Still has his moments but they're almost far and few between now. However there is one thing that has been with him since he was a wittle puppy and that is WHINING. I'm telling you...

Thunder Storms
Write now it is pouring rain and thundering real bad. My dog has never been with us in a bad storm, and right now she is whimpering, shivering and panting. I don't think I can stop it. Every time I talk to her she starts shivering more. My neighbors put their dog in the laundry room when it thunders...

Dominance Marking?
About a month ago my husband and I adopted a dog. He is neutered and housebroken. We had a cat already and took time to slowly introduce the cat and dog. However we are noticing that the dog is urine marking on things that the cat has scent on. For example, the couch that the cat sleeps on has been marked...

Muzzles?
Ok I recently adopted a 4 year old female Weimaraner. Her story: Holly was a house dog for the first 2 years of her life according to the guy(co-worker) I got her from. I do not know the reason but her owner sold her to my co-worker. He bought her on the intentions of breeding but she would not...

Well I still have Damien. We have been working really hard and things seem to be progressing. He is a very nervous dog.If I hadnt had him since 5 weeks I would believe he was abused. He is jumpy and cant focus when training and unless he is sitting on me is whining. Even if he is on a down stay touching...

Putting our money where our mouth is
We talk a lot about the theory of dog training in this thread. I am going to post some real life scenarios of dogs in trouble and after some discussion put up the way it was actually solved along with the theoretical backing that supported the approach. These examples are mostly from tracking. It is...

Pivoting For Heel
Any of you watch kikopup? She's an amazing clicker trainer. Take a look at this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xsvNvK8T1z8 I need some help with troubleshooting. My dog tends to either go into a down or a sit before he puts his paw on the book. So far, that's all I've taught...

We let him out before bedtime then he holds it til about 6am when I get up and let him out. Well, last night we put him in his crate as usual and he was fine until he heard my...

Resource guarding under control... Kinda...
Maze is a resource guarder. I will not deny that. Granted we've come leaps and bounds to where she will share almost anything.. Except for myself. She will resource guard me and it gets worse when I have food on my person. I've taken to working without food since she's not very driven...
