Whining

    Whining

Haven't really asked any questions lately, which is a good thing I suppose. :P Simba's a LOT better now. Still has his moments but they're almost far and few between now. However there is one thing that has been with him since he was a wittle puppy and that is WHINING. I'm telling you now, honest to god I NEVER paid attention to him when he would do this in his crate or elsewhere and it's highly irritating when you're trying to listen to what the trainer is saying in dog class and my pup is whining. I figure he does it for attention, or because he's anxious but I don't know how to stop it. The places he does it is either training class, or other public settings. He's fine if the attention is on him but if he sees something he wants, or if I'm trying to listen to what the trainer is saying he's whining up a storm. How do I stop this? He is a rather vocal dog to begin with. :-/

I'd capture that with a clicker and teach him to whine on cue.  Then, I'd install the "shut off" switch and extend the duration of the "quiet".

That's a good idea, I wouldn't have thought about teaching him that, that way. Thank you! :D

Once upon a time, I was owned by a PITA min pin, Sammy. He also did this at obedience, the entire time and it was embarasing and irritating. I put it on ignore. That dog literally drove me to drink! Sorry for getting OT and for the mini rant.

HAHA! Oh my god, thank god Simba isn't THAT bad. Once we start the actual training he's fine. I guess he just wants something to do. :-/ I'll try that whole clicker thing though.

Same way we sometimes put barking on cue to be able to stop the barking.  There's an article on it at Karen Pryor's web site - you have to join, but it's free.

I always manage to put vocalizing on cue. Strange though how they never understand "quiet".

For during training class, find out from the trainer if toys are allowed, if so, calmly let him mouth a toy when you're trying to listen. Or just have him do puppy push-ups or something easy you can chain using just hand signals.

Or start teaching him with a whisper. "Wait" and "leave it" are good to work on with a whisper. That should allow you to also be able to hear what the trainer is saying.

I don't have any advice for you as I had a dog, Buster, who did a whining thing his whole life, so I feel your pain.  Does it sound anything like this?

This is Buster very excited because 'Grandma' is visiting:

Oh my god, YES! It is SO irritating. I know some dogs are just...like that but I'm hoping the advice people have given me here will lessen it. :)

LOL yes very irritating.  Although now that he is gone, I sure do miss it!  I never managed to put it on cue, we just sort of accepted it as a quirk.  However, it made anything nearly impossible until he calmed down.  I could not imagine having taken him to obedience classes!!  That sound always made me wonder what kind of a mix he was.  The shelter had said pit/shepherd mix, but I wondered if there was greyhound in there because I have heard that greyhounds do that sort of sound as well.

I gave up. We now have entire conversations in "whine".
