    anxiety

Well I still have Damien. We have been working really hard and things seem to be progressing. He is a very nervous dog.If I hadnt had him since 5 weeks I would believe he was abused. He is jumpy and cant focus when training and unless he is sitting on me is whining. Even if he is on a down stay touching me he just sits there doing this very low whine. I know he  is under socialized , which is completely my fault. I am working on that, he jumps a little if someone touches him but then is fine and will seek them out for attention. If I could get him to focus and just relax a little he would be an amazing little dog. He still isnt 100% housebroken but i would say we are up to about 80%

I am looking for advice on what to do training wise to help him but also wondered if rescue remedy would help with his anxiety.

    Thanks

    Erin and Damien

You know honestly this sounds so much like the way Kee Shu was when she came to us.  Does he ever do any weirdo repetitive little things like air-licking or odd behaviors like pacing, circling, or even odd head movements?  Kee would crane her head to the left and/or right almost like she was looking for something ... but if you charted it over 10 minutes there was a definite but complicated "pattern"  It all seemed to worsen any time she was in a situation where she felt uneasy (which was most of the time and she wasn't even comfy being held which is most unusual for a peke)/

We discovered Kee's oddities were really a form of what they used to call "petit mal" or tiny seizures -- and my TCVM vet put her on a low dose of an anti-seizure herb and WOW !!!! DIFFERENT DOG!

this is nothing my regular vet diagnosed -- he'd seen it, and we'd all remarked on the repetitive weirdo behaviors but it just seemed like she'd had a hard life.

These herbs aren't destructive to the body -- http://www.tcvm.com ... if you want to email me to talk about this feel free.

Feel free to try Rescue Remedy -- it's one of those things that works great for some dogs and for others it doesn't do much.  I tried many different relaxants for Kee -- and one of the ones that always helped was Oat Seed.  That's not a common one to find.  I used to use Herb Pharm Oat Seed for her -- it's not habit-forming.  But in the realm of relaxants it's more a "mellow out" type of herb rather than a muscle relaxer like passionflower or valerian.

Thank you Callie. Now you have me thinking about some of his behaviors..I am going to have to watch more closely and see if there is a pattern. I will look for the Oat seed. thanks

What type of behavior modification have you done so far? Have you thought about prescription meds? L-theanine is supposed to help with anxiety. I have my super anxious dog (who also whines and vocalizes whenever we go anywhere or do anything) on a mix of prozac and l-theanine. It is not a permanent thing. She is only on this stuff while we work on training. It brings down her anxiety enough so that our training can actually sink in. Otherwise she doesn't learn anything because she is too anxious and worried about her surroundings. At first our progress was really slow to the point where I thought nothing was going to work. Now she is improving by leaps and bounds. I know this wouldn't be possible without the medication.

I have just been working on training in general with him. I exercise him before training to burn off some energy. He is always on high alert when we are out, he barks when we pass people while he tries to hide behind me. He gets a lot of praise if he approaches people without his hair up, and is calm.He whines if we are out and someone gets out of the truck even if he doesnt know them. I can't do treats because he literally can not control himself if he sees food. He will offer every behavior he knows if he sees a treat and just shake with anticipation. I am going to try the stuff Callie mentioned to see if that helps at all before I go for other meds .

You can also try Hylands Calms Forte -- it takes a bit longer to work but it won't zone him out.

In this particular case trying a straight homeopathic "single" remedy like chamomillia might be just the ticket.  Or .... chamomillia and hypericum together (I've done that before LOTS of times -- I buy a tube of each and give 1-2 pellets of each to the dog at the same time.

They are wee tiny little sugar pills - you don't put them "in" anything you literally put them in a folded 3x5 card and crush them (tap with a small hammer).  Pour the dust on his tongue -- or if he's like mine he'll go nuts to lick it up.  They are sweet and taste good.

But homeopathics work FAST. (The Calms is unusual in that it takes 45 minutes or so -- it works in the tummy rather than the mouth -- the other two I mentioned works almost instantly)

Oat Seed -- if you have a Whole Foods near you you can probably get it.  It's made by Herb Pharm.   Again it's sweet and easy for them to like.  Just squirt it in his mouth.

Use these simply as training AIDS.  In other words -- just medicating him won't do a darned thing other than maybe help him sleep.  But using it before you try TO train will often help the brain to function better.

So I got the Calms Forte for him as there was a store close buy that carries it. I like the fact that he is not so out of it he sleeps all the time. usually when he is laying on me if i touch him he jumps, well last night I touched his back and he didnt jump. we also did a down stay with him on the floor in front of me, he did it without whining or shaking. it was only for a few minutes but it was so nice. I am taking things slow with him but I am hopeful now.Thank you so much
