How to stop barking when alone
Hi, I adopted a dog abouth 3 weeks ago and have never heard a peep out of him. Never heard a bark, growl, anything and it just came to my attention from a note from the neighbors that he barks when he is alone the entire time. Now he is only alone for one or two hours at a time during the day, but of...

Dog "Psychology"
Sort of..... Belle is a thinking dog. No this is not a bad behavior on ANY plane, but sometimes it would be better if she just 'does'. For instance agility. She is very methodical, velcro, never puts a foot wrong, enjoys herself but never cuts loose. About a year ago, we realized if I ran "with"...

Teaching a new class need advice/suggestions (Update!)
My life has been busy working in a shelter but I love all the dogs I care for. I have been helping with obedience classes which, along with my work, has caused my understanding in dog behavior, training and anatomy to exploded with so much knowledge. I have even been in training with a few professional...

Sheep
We've gone round and round about how smart dogs are or aren't. Interesting article about the fact that we may not have known as much as we thought about sheep either: http://www.care2.com/greenliving/sheep-much-more-intelligent-than-assumed.html

Sagan’s Baloney Detection Kit on NDT philosophy
So I posted in NTD website under my other handle 'Subaru' (I have astronomical themed handles) and actually read though all of the articles and comments posted. I had also just finished a second reading of Sagan's 'Candle in the dark" and the book was fresh in my mind as I read though...

Interesting behavior at animal shelter...
Just over two weeks ago DH and I went to Miami to get our baby Royce (who is doing GREAT!) and I noticed something quite interesting. This shelter was crowded... Four or five dogs to a run. Dog breeds known to be same sex aggressive etc. In just fine with others. One run had a bull terrier, two female...

Riley's a "red" dog. - Advice please
No, not just his fur color :P . According to "What Color Is Your Dog?" by Joel Silverman, Riley is a red dog personality-wise. He has a high-spirited and outgoing personality, and can sometimes be difficult to control. Riley has issues with other dogs while we are walking and he is on leash...

Why did she pee on our bed on the blanket!
Hello, my name is Joanne. We have a 14 month old Maltipoo names Cuddles. We only have her for a little over 2 months. The person that had her before also only had her for about that long. She said she bought her from someone who had too many dogs and thought she was going to get turned in so was selling...

Managing Dog Reactivity
I am hoping to get some advice on managing Veronica's reactivity to other dogs. Veronica is somewhat fearful, reactive and can lack confidence (in certain situations - in other situations she is inappropriately over confident). She has poor dog - dog social skills and is very dog reactive;...

Off-leash Playing During Class, Should it be Allowed?
This is a question I have been going back and forth in my mind. Should I allow off leash playing in my classes? The class I am currently assisting with, the trainer allows the dogs to play freely before and after the class off-leash. It seems to work out well so far but it concerns me that something...

No Bark Collar
I am curious if anyone has used a no bark collar to get their dog to stop barking in its crate when you're still in the room? I go to agility class/trials and if I'm not right next to the crate, Kota barks like crazy. bleh.... I thought about trying a citronella collar but if he's in a crate...

Prey/hunt drive take 2
Thinking back to this thread It is Spring here and Bugsy's hunt or prey drive is full on. He is intent about everything, our walks might as well be a tracking exercise and unsurprisingly I am seeing him much more on the edge of reacting. This morning he was lost in the 'job' when runner approached...

New Rescue & food aggression (LONG)
Hi, I just posted my info in the introduction, I had a account here on I-dog years ago, have a APBT named Rory, maybe some of you remember me. Anyhow we rescued a 1.5 year old BT and named him Ryder. Teaching Heel
Those of you who walk your dog on your left (probably most of you), did you reinforce your dog using your left or right hand? I've always used my left, and I also keep the pouch on my left. However, I was just reading that Pat Miller recommends using the right hand "so the dog doesn't learn...

Barking and Separation Anxiety
I have a 17month old neutered teacup poodle named Rockit. My boyfriend and I moved froma house in the suburbs to a condo in the city about 5 months ago. Once we moved in, it was apparent that Rockit had a "barking problem." He barks at all the neighbors closing their doors, talking, and the...
