What do I look for when I go see a dog?
Okay, Mic! I think sometime tomorrow I am going to see a dog that is up for adoption. This dog is listed on the same site as Maggie but it's not a gsd. For some reason a Lab/Mastif is listed and I have been e-mailing the foster mom about the dog. Please remind me what I should be looking for in...

My dog won't let me sleep!
My one year old lab/border collie mix won't let us sleep in the mornings. I think it's partly because she's a creature of habit so she wants us up at 7:30am whether it's a workday or a weekend. I think it's also because she can hear the neighbors upstairs get up and wants to play...

Couple of Housetraining Questions
I have an 11 week old female lab who I think is doing well in the housetraining dept. (I've had her since 8 weeks.) She sleeps an average of 6-7 hours straight thru the nite and does not soil her crate while I'm at work. (4 hours avg) Now a couple of things: ...She's fine in her crate...

Proper Hand Signals (cues)?
Are there any "proper" or widely used hand signals for training? Not knowing much about training, I started using some of my own hand signals (like palm down for "down" ;) . However, I came acoss palm up for "sit", which is different then the signal I use. So I got...

vocalizing during play
Okay, my little chi Petey has always had a problem with vocalization. He was a single pup, and he was given to us at 6 weeks - so he missed those crucial 2 weeks with his mother, so he's never had normal vocalization. Now, when we added Winnie and Prince - who were young, but had the benefit of...

my dog does no use his two rear legs - does not eat
My dog does not use his two back legs, and also does not eat, only drinks. What could be the problem? I have no lisence for the dog, if it dies, what should I do with it?

Puppy proofing a room
I currently crate my Boomer during the day when we're at work. The crate is in a spare bedroom upstairs. I would like to puppy proof this room so he can have more room to play around in during the day. The thing is the room is carpeted and I'm afraid he'll have an accident on the carpet as...

She bit a stranger! Help!
A couple of days ago, Ash and I were leaving our apartment and walking to the car. As we were walking, a man was walking towards us, just crossing paths. Ash wasn't growling or anything, just sniffing the grass. When he got shuolder to shoulder with me, exactly as we were passing, Ash lunged at him...

Training to walk on leash
I'm sure this has been addressed many times before (and if there already is a thread out there, maybe someone could direct me to it?). I have a 9 month old Cavalier puppy that pulls, he's not horrible tho, and he's coming along pretty well actually, we just need to get outside and go for...

Do I need to worry about this? (snarling when woken up)
I mentioned in my photo post that Roscoe is learning to be on the sofa with permission only, and he's taken to sleeping at my feet under my desk. Last night, I accidentally nudged him with my foot in the rear end and he woke up with a snarl. Then when he was snuggling with me on the couch...

7 Year old Boxer - Lost Cause?
Hey everyone, new to the board here, just a question. I have a 7 year old Boxer, she is wonderful around close friends and family, but is a nervous wreck...and quite aggressive around new people. She jumps on, bites at, scratches up new visitors to the house. I had adopted her when she was 9 months...

Acting out?
My 2 year old mix (greyhound/shepard) is I think, I hope acting out. She is crate trained and well exercised by me and the dog upstairs[ ]. Recently my girlfriend who I live with has started working nights again, we're both servers and students, as soon as she started working, my dogs "problem"...

Barking and Growling at me!!!
I'm cross posting this - please disregard if you have already replied - thanks! My 6.5 month male Havanese has just found his voice. He was so quiet that you'd never know he was around, until very recently. If we're eating and he doesn't get any table food, he will bark at us, and...

Recommended Videos
I am new to training, but I am interested in working with my pups. I am mostly interested in teaching them obedience and tracking. (Maybe even more at a later time). I have bought a few books and videos, but so far I haven't found much that I really like. So instead of buying more, I was hoping...

Dodger: air-snapping update
After I took Dodger to a recent get-together (of mostly puppies), I finally decided to go to our trainer for behavioural counselling. Dodger and I had stopped going to the dog park/pet stores and I felt like I was avoiding the issue. The advice that people here on i-dog offered, was reiterated by...

How do I get my Lab to respect the street and CARS
My 14 month old Lab is happy go lucky. But that doesn't transfer to good behavior on those occasions when he finds an open gate, or slips the leash when we're going from the car to the house. He's likely as not to bolt for our neighbor's house where his playmate is, and if there is a...

laid up and need ideas
I'm looking at another month or two of being laid up with this *#$@! broken ankle. Any suggestions on things I can do to keep my 3y/o Irish/Golden entertained, both physically and mentally? He is getting antsy & I don't want him to "find" something to do to keep himself occupied...

5 month old - aggressive biting!
Molly's a good pup most of the time, yet she has these aggressive tendencies. Here's a little background: she's 75% havanese and 25% lhasa apso, 5 mos. old. She took a basic puppy training class - was socialized quite a bit and learned the basic commands. She is pretty much potty-trained...
