First off, let me aplogize for the long post but I need to give you all the facts. About a month ago my 9 year old shih tzu woke us up in the middle of the night to go outside. This alarmed me because she never gets up in the middle of the night.....ever! Anyway she continued to wake us up every couple...

Animal Consciousness Article
Colin Allen studied philosophy, but his PhD work was very ethology focused, as are most of his current research activity. For Dog Forum folk who are interested in the subject, this article gives a history of how philosophers have dealt with animal consciousness over time. It is long, but pretty readable...

Random Aggression
I know that dog aggression usually isn't random but I don't know what to do with my dog. I adopted him about a year and a half ago and he has been the most wonderful dog. He has gotten into a couple fights at the dog park, but each one was because he was attacked and neither dog would back down...

Now Tootsie...
has developed a taste for my parents dog's poop. The problem is they have a fenced yard, so going potty is just opening the door and letting them out. Kinda hard to supervise potty breaks because I'm at work. Also, the little minx only listens to me.So I'm giving the pineapple theory a try...

2 dogs best of friends 1 attacks the other
I have 2 dogs Marlie, a 3 year old lab and Choco, a 1 year old lab/blue healer mix. Marlie was a 1 1/2 years old when he was dropped off by his previous family. I know he has a fear of being abandoned. We got Choco when he was 6 weeks old. The 2 can't be seperated from the hip. From mid November...

Help me shop!! (3girls)
Alright, tax money is in and its time to go shopping!! I'd like input on what needs to go on my list to expand my crews' training. We do or want to do - tricks, rally, agility, obedience, freestyle. Most of this will be worked on at home, not in a training class. So what do I need?? If it's...

4 months old keeps scratching and barking at her bed
I'm not sure why, but our puppy (that we've had for about a month now) keeps scratching and barking at/into her bed. When she's scratching the bed, it almost looks like she's digging for something, and she'll bark at it and bark into the bed. Does anyone know why? Thanks!

6 year old Shih Tzu suddenly pooping in house
We have a Shih Tzu. We got her as a rescue when she was 11 months old. She was in the rescue for 7 months because one of the workers there wanted to save up the money to adopt her. But when I came looking for a small dog, she saw how the dog and I got along and let me adopt her. Her name is JennaBug...

Very recently started barking at people..why?
Juno's a ~2.5 year old shelter mutt (Aussie/pit?). I've had her for a year and a half. She's never barked at anyone in that time, every person she meets is absolutely her best friend on the planet and she's never loved anyone more. 2 weeks ago we flew across the country. She loved...

Is my dog not the right one for me?
Hi everyone, Just seeking advice and opinions on my ordeal. I have two dogs, a 4 year old Jack Russell Terrier (Spot) who I've had since he was a just a month old or so. I also adopted a Bull Terrier (Oliver) about 5 months ago. He is 10 months now. The first month or so, Oliver was doing great socializing...

Is my puppy learning to be aggressive?
I recently rescued a lab cross puppy who is now ten weeks old. Training is going well and she seems clever and eager to learn. I have three other dogs who are much older (10+ years) who are all still active and healthy. The pup doesn't bother with two of them, but the third (also a lab cross) is...

Pound Rescue Male Shih Tzu, keeps sending me to the ER. at wits end
Hello I guess I've come here as a last resort. I'm looking for help with people that understand better the breed than I, and help me understand what is happening. Back in July I went to the pound to see a Male Shih Tzu that was on their website. They weren't promoting him like the other...

Random Outbursts of Aggression....Dominance related?
Hi, I have a 9 month old Shitzu puppy. He has one of the most docile temperaments I have ever seen on a dog. This dog is like a baby doll, he just wants to be loved and hugged. Even when he plays he never bites hard and is always gentle. However, recently he has been having some aggression issues...

Marking/Peeing in the house
We have a 5 year old Bichon who we trained as a puppy to pee in his "Whizbox". He does pee and poop in the whiz box and also outside, when I take him out. The problem is that he pees on the floor throughout the house to mark his territory. This usually happens during the night or early morning...

5 Ways to Ruin Your Dog (miranadobe)
I won't give a direct link, since this goes to a website for profit, but the entry is DEF worth reading - and sharing. I don't know how many times I've encountered people who want to tell me why they refuse to crate train, or how they hoped their dog would "grow out of" his horrific...

Peeing in the house, but not because he needs to go - related to collar
We've had our dog, Snoopy, three years this month, he was a shelter rescue at about 6 months, he's fixed. He's great with the kids (10, 7, and 19 months), he lets us know when he needs to go out. He's been through some obedience training, and is pretty good most of the time. He does like...
