    Now Tootsie...

has developed a taste for my parents dog's poop. The problem is they have a fenced yard, so going potty is just opening the door and letting them out. Kinda hard to supervise potty breaks because I'm at work. Also, the little minx only listens to me.So I'm giving the pineapple theory a try. Question is: pineapple juice or chopped pineapple and how much? Thanks!

The enzyme bromelain (digests proteins) is the ingredient in pineapple that supposedly help discourage stool eating.  It's also in some meat tenderizers.  I don't think the juice would have sufficient quantities but don't really know.  I remain a skeptic in how effective this is for most dogs but hope it works for Toots.

Chopped seems to work the best, you know the saying  "just a couple big chunks a day keeps the poop eater away"  yeah... anyway...

Biggest thing to remember is that you have to make sure all the dogs who go potty in that area are eating the pineapple, especially if you can't control who's poo she is eating.  It's not harmful so it's at least worth a shot.

I'll be giving it to both dogs (Tootsie and K.C.), as they are the only two out there. Heres hoping. Big Smile

I've tried pineapple -- the mushed up is better than just the juice.

Meat tenderizer -- my vet had me try that once and I got into a problem with it.  Meat tenderizer is about 90% salt.  The ingredient that actually makes the difference is papaya enzyme -- now you can USE papaya (juice works fine there) or small amounts of papaya capsules (like 1/2 capsule once a day for a week) but it's nothing I'd want you to do long term without the advice of a good holistic vet.

Your vet should have For-Bid -- that was somewhat effective, but ONLY as long as they were all on it.  If you can "nip this in the bud" you'll be better off.

Has anyone checked your parent's dog to see if anything has changed there?  Have they changed food recently?

Seems like pineapple would contain a LOT of sugar?  Even fresh (not canned) always seems very sweet to me.

The enzyme can be purchased in powder form.  A friend tried this but had no luck with her poop eater.

That's what I was talking about actually -- and I'm going to echo Jackie's "reservation" solidly here -- to be perfectly honest with you, I have tried EVERYTHING under the sun and nothing is really hugely effective.

I regularly give my dogs fruit and they love it -- so natural sugar like that doesn't concern me negatively at all. And none of my dogs are over-weight. But pineapple, papaya, pumpkin --  it has seemed to me that in order to give them enough to discourage stool-eating gives them such diarrhea that it's pointless.  And even the For-Bid, which was successful at first but it couldn't be given long enough to break the 'habit' OR there was something in the waste that just so CALLED to Tink and Kee Shu that it over-rode everything else.

But I found it really interesting that after I lost Billy the problem diminished somewhat -- and continues to be less of a problem with Charlie around.  That makes me go "hmmm" -- because it was always clear to me that Billy always had health issues and really didn't fully process his food 100%. I really have to wonder if there was enough protein left in his stool to make it **REALLY** attractive (and he always was supplemented taurine/l-carnitine as well which again may have made the stool more attractive.)

So one of the things I'd say to try would be something like Pro-Zyme in both dogs food -- see if aiding digestion so that the stool contacts less "attractive" stuff might be a sensible option.  It's something that wouldn't hurt to try at least.

Nope. Shes been on Blue Buffalo Adult formula  since she was adopted from the local HS 3 years ago. K.C. is a big (80 lb.+) lab/ rottie mix. Shes also 11(?). Hopefully this was a random poop eating thing, but I'm still gonna try the pineapple. If it doesn't work no harm done.

exactly -- pineapple is actually good for them.
