Lovely 6 yr old labby bitch pooing at night!

My beautiful, friendly, confident, loving family black labby cross, Poppy - who was difficult to house train as a pup (it took 18months!) - occasionally and for no apparent reason poos when she is shut in at night. It's not every week and she doesn't do it when she stays with friends when we go away without her. It's not an upset tum. Why would she do this and how do we stop it - given that we haven't a cage and the 'restircted' space she is shut into at night is an open-plan kitchen (my husband won't have a cage). We have tried closing off a section but she still does it.....

    any ideas anyone please?

When does she eat and how much?  How long is she in the kitchen at night?

she eats a bowl of kibble at around 5 or 6 and then gets shut in after a 15min walk for toileting at around 11pm. we are up to let her out by 7 most mornings.

Hmmm.... sounds a lot like my dogs.  They eat around 5 and have plenty of chances to poop between then and 10-11PM (usually they eat and then poop right away and don't need to poop again in the evening).  Not really sure what to advise other than more crating/confinement but hopefully someone else will have an idea...

yeah, it doesn't seem to make any sense does it? ....

think you need to re-house train. I just went through this with one of my dogs. Restrict access to the house at night and the dog will get the idea again.

Exactly how much food in cups? How much does your Poppy weigh?Does she get other foods in addition? What brand of food is it?What are you using to clean with? Her restricted space should be small like a bathroom so she would have to be bothered by the presence of her waste.

I 1/4 as per her weight - 30kg she weighs, she has half a Bonio when she gets shut in, not much else. Cleaning with disinfectant, and really scrubbing.

It will be difficult to close off the space much, we could only really use furniture as she is in largish kitchen - we can shut off snug bit with carpet (her preference for pooing!) - and have been doing so.

It's funny its only about once a month - if that - but my husband is fed up with it as he gets up first! funny but when i walked her before bed the night before she last did it, it was miserable and pouring and it was as if she relly didnt want to hang around and do what she had to do!! I think when she stays with our freinds, it is a smaller space and thus (thankfully) she is clean.

    any ideas??!

Because your dog does well at your friends in a small space you know what you need to do to help her stay clean all night.Get her in a smaller space.Your husband needs to realize his inflexibility about crates is causing this habit to become ingrained. If not a crate then a bathroom,or xpen. There is no other way than that to make sure she will not potty when unsupervised. The crate may not be needed after she has unlearned her habit of going in the house. All my dogs started out in crates at night but when they no longer needed them they were packed away.It took several monthes for each to earn nightime freedom.Clean thoroughly with an enzyme cleaner like Nature's Miracle not regular household cleaners and never with anything containing amonia.Make sure to praise her alot when she does go outside.
