"Emergency" recall
I see these phrase a lot, "emergency recall." I guess what I don't understand is why is there a difference? If the dog will not come to a normal recall, then IMO the dog doesn't have a recall, period. If the dog comes to the "emergency" recall, why is that not THE recall?...

Dog Booties
Does anyone have suggestions for a good set of dog booties? The salt and snow makes winter walking very unpleasant for my guys... they've mastered the art of hopping down the street, lol. I am looking for booties that would be good for walking on slushy streets as well as running through deeper...

Spitting Treats? (aDork)
The other day Jennie said something about spitting treats. I'm wondering how this works (not the actual mechanics of spitting, but how do you give commands and spit treats)? I don't use a clicker with Misha, because the noise either startles him, or he focuses on the clicker too much -- it provides...

Anxiety
About a week and a half ago I got a DVR in the bedroom. Abbie & Layla have always slept in bed with me and the tv is typically on. It has never been an issue until now. Whenever I turn the tv on or off Layla jumps off the bed and runs out of the room terrified. If I bring her back in the bedroom...

Personality change?
I fostered a litter of 6 Weimaraner pups for a couple weeks. All of them had homes lined up for them except one little blue girl. I call her Rain. She was the "alpha" one over the other pups. Spunky, bossy, very independent, and just so darn cute! Now that the others have gone to their homes...

Behavior change
Hello there! I have a 10 year old male Jack Rusell, Marley, who has been a fantastic dog with the kids. 10 months ago we introduced a female boxer puppy, Lola, into the family. At first things went well. Individually they are both GREAT dogs. However a couple months ago the dogs started fighting at meal...

Article: Positives of Negatives & Negatives of Positives
http://www.theotherendoftheleash.com/positives-of-negatives-negatives-of-positives This article is so in line with my own stances on the topics that I just had to share it - Patricia McConnell puts it into much better words than I ever could! Thoughts?

Abused Dog
I saved my female dog form certain death when I found her on the side of the road half dead with a fractured skull. After spending a week in the hospital the doctors told me I could take her home. We think she was either hit by a car or thrown out of one. The only 3 people she trusts and loves...

New dog nipping at kids
Hello. I'm new here. We adopted a dog from the shelter a couple of weeks ago. He's about 15 mo. He's is a wonderful dog except he has been randomly nipping at the kids. There seems to be various reasons which I'm trying to take on as they come up, but it is frustrating because it seems...

Super high value treats help please!
So Jackson's rally trial is this weekend. It's very likely that DH is going to have to do at least one run with him. They've never worked together before. I need to come up with some super high value treats that'll make Jackson sit up and want to work with DH. Keep in mind, Jackson's...

What wil we find next?
Hi All I am an ardent student of things dog. I think that we are at an interesting Nexus in history that we are acknowledging the emotional basis of much behaviour which many dog owners and trainers long suspected. There are many other sightly heretical things that i have noticed about behavour. One...

How much is to much?
Corrections in behavior training has it's place. I feel that if all else has failed then a correction is needed. But when does correction become abuse? I'll use Maze as an example. She LOVES to play in traffic. And I don't mean chase cars. I mean play bowing, playing chicken with cars in...

Tug and gripping
I'm looking for suggestions on how to get abbie to grip harder when we tug. She has a great grip for tugging on the frisbee, probably because we've been doing the frisbee thing since she was a baby. However, she has a soft mouth / grip on everything else. The purpose behind this is that I want...

Growling after boarding
My dog Mazzy, a 2 year old Australian Labradoodle, was boarded over Christmas for 2 weeks. She has regularly stayed at this "dog camp" before, both for week long stays and once every week or two play days. She is a very friendly dog, but she does like to play a little rough for some dogs. She...

tie-outs and aggression?
Hello, We adopted what we're thinking might be a cattle dog/collie mix from a rescue 6 months ago. She is very sweet, but also VERY active. The problem we're having is that with the snow in our yard, she has discovered she can very easily jump over our fence. The only way I can now let her out...
