NOVA: How Smart are Dogs?
I searched the forum for NOVA and think maybe this Feb 2011 show maybe news to many members. It demonstrates how dogs are cognitively structured much as we are, and even shows w/o question that dogs use rational inference/deduction to make decisions. What a smart dog! 6-year-old lab not potty trained?
I have a problem... Let me give you some history. I have a 6-year-old lab/border collie mix that I've had since she was 3 months old. She is the BEST dog! Loves people, listens to commands, no aggression whatsoever, grown up with my kids. While I am at work, she is crated and always has been...

door darting?
Is there a way to correct a dog for darting out an open door and then running around the parking lot without responding to his name? This just happened and took me at least 10 minutes and many un safe situations to get him back. I understand preventing the situation is ideal, but when it happens accidentally...

All I want to do is Play
I've been working with a female pit bull who is approx 2 yrs old and is deaf for about 2months. She is very sweet and always gives me kisses when she first sees me. The last 2 times including today about halfway thru her walk she goes into play mode and any item I have becomes a tug toy. We've...

Puppy failed temperament test for food aggression
I work at a humane society where temperament testing is performed to determine whether or not a dog can be placed up for adoption. I know of puppies as young as 5 weeks old failing for food aggression! The most recent puppy is a 3 month old small breed dog. The people who did the temperament test video...

aggression after a fight
My two-year-old malamute was recently attacked at the dog park (big dog went after him while he was at the water bowl). It resulted in a bloody face and a trip to the vet. While his eye has healed, he now appears a little skittish around other dogs. He has always been so sweet and tolerant of other dogs...

Dog chewing stitches?
Okay, so my pup got neutered 2 days ago--and just a few minutes ago I heard him ripping at the stitches with his teeth. He's only done it the one time, that I know of, but that's enough to have me nervous. Should I go to the vet and get one of those cone things, or is there a less humiliating...

Incident where dog is aggressive towards owner..
Had a bit of a scary encounter with my puppy. He's 7 months old now or so and usually does well with me. I've never had him bite me on purpose or never a growl. Last night he was a bit off schedule and started whimpering around midnight. I gave him a firm no for awhile because I had thought he...

The Techniques In Training a Dog
The Techniques In Training a Dog For most dog handlers, they believe that positive reinforcement is the best way to train a dog. Yes, it may be for some but this might not work for the others. So before taking on any of the principles discussed, it is still better to have an assessment of your dog's...

Hello all, My husband and I have a meremma sheepdog mix puppy. Her name is Polly and she is 8 months old, 65+ pounds, and a really sweet girl. However, in the past few weeks, we've noticed that she gets aggressive when we ask her to either go outside or go to another room in the house (she's...

Shaping
I'm wondering, is shaping becoming more popular now? There wasn't much on the topic 10 years ago. But if you look now, there's a number of profesionally made videos on the topic you can get: (Pamela Dennison - The Magic of Shaping, Virginia Broitman - The Shape of Bow Wow, Leslie Nelson ...

To step, or not to step....... on/over the dog?
My three dogs know I will very carefully step over them if they happen to be lying in the path. so consequently they won't even raise an eybrow when I do so. They just lay there as is they have the right-of way...I can see shock and dissillusionment coming down the road if there is an emergency and...

Too Aggressive?
I have a 2 year old Male English Chocolate Lab named Bear who weighs about 70lbs and a 1 1/2 year old Female Great Dane, Bella, that weighs around 100 lbs. They have grown up together. They play very rough, and because Bear is an english lab he is very stocky, so Bella can do whatever she likes to him...

Anxiety issues - Excesive whining when I'm not home.
Although this is my first post, I have been lurking around these forums for a while. Recently though my dog started showing this behavior, and so I decided I needed a forum account so I could get some help. She's a healthy 1.5 years old Parson Jack Russell Terrier. She is extremely loyal, cooperative...
