which breed is right for me?

which breed is right for me?

i need help! i can't find the "perfect" breed / mix. i've taken the breed quiz on dogbreedinfo, but i think i need an extra hand.

here are some things that would add up to my "perfect" dog.

    • cuddly, affectionate, wigglebum. i live to curl up and snuggle up with a soft friend and love them to bits.

    • a young enough dog so he/she has energy, playfulness, and zest for adventure, but old enough to have good manners and be mature enough to be easily trained. it'll be a rescue dog for sure.

    • a companion for jogging and exploring nature.

    • a dog i can train to walk with me off-leash, or at least have the walk feel like a joint effort. so not a scent hound (beagle etc) that will be in their own little world the whole time.

    • someone who'd love to play frizbee or fetch. let's make outside time interactive!

    • someone with a sweet little face, like a beagle or cocker. no pugs or pekingese please! i'm also not much of a fluff-ball person - maltese, bichon, poodle, etc. i like a more rugged companion.

    • medium size, preferably 20-30ish lbs.

    • good or ok for an allergy sufferer - although this isn't a deal breaker. i realize that maltese, bichon, and poodle mixes tend to be better for this.

    • a mix-breed dog to minimize the possibility of serious health problems later.

    what do you guys think?

As a volunteer at my SPCA in Oklahoma the biggest problem I see is people getting dogs where their energy level isn't the same as the dog's and they end up coming back. It's much better for you to have to have the same or higher level than your dog. For the qualities you're looking for a herding breed might work well for you as they're smart, athletic and love to play.

     You need a Corgi! Wink

I agree on the herding breed. Aussies or border collies would fit the bill. All my aussies are in the 40lb range though, they can be 35 to 70 lbs (ish). And of course they are hairy. They are everything else you want though, wiggle butts, excited, playful, biddable, smart, good off leash (when trained), have a great in house off switch and are protective. While im a purebred aussie lover, my uncle is an aussie mix lover. He swears by the mix part saying that it makes them even better. (Shrug)

Oh yeah, a corgi. That would prob be perfect.

I second the aussies!!! I LOVE mine! I also have a corgi mix, who's a great dog as well :)

Aussies tend to be pretty healthy, generally, and there are a TON in shelters - esp. in the Georgia/Florida area.

Would you consider a pit bull terrier? They come in all sizes, colors and all different energy levels. Perfect cuddly couch potatos in the home but very agile and athletic when out running about. They love to play and in the right hands they are wonderful companions and have some of the sweetest faces with an enormous smile.

Look at these faces of pitties in my shelter right now:

This little girl is 3 years old and only 30lbs, she really matches with a lot of your points and the type of temperament your looking for. There are many dogs just like her in shelters all around the US and Canada.

My advice is to go to your local shelter, meet with a few dog that really stand out to you and take a "test drive" with the dog, meaning walk the dog, play with it and see if there are any connections.

Well, the OP did say they were considering a mixed breed as well.  But knowing what potential mixes to look for (or not!) can help when trying to decide what the perfect dog is.

OP, it sounds like you have a good list.  Check out petfinder or your local shelter/rescues and tell them what you're looking for.  If they're decent, they'll help YOU find the right dog.
