Pee'd on my son's bed

    Pee'd on my son's bed

So we have a lovely 10 month old Boston Terrier whom has been fully potty trained since he was 3 months old....no accidents. Yesterday my son was sitting on his own bed, reading a book and Indy (our BT) marked my son's arm, his book and bed!!! I was in shock!

Indy is awesome, we practice NILIF, he gets a ton of exercise, he loves my son and NO he is not nuetered yet. Him and my son are best friends, they get along so well, my son respects Indy as children should so I am super confused. My son feeds him, ie pours the food, makes him wait and goes to eat when my son says its ok. Indy isnt typically a brat, he dosnt jump on people, dosnt jump on the furniture and has a awesome recall.

I had just taken him potty a hour before. Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Do you have any other pets?

Obviously neutering is a suggestion. Other than that, it's hard to know what sparked that behavior. My (neutered) male has marked me as well as close friends before when we were in locations with other dogs and lots of people around. He is the definition of best dog on the planet too. He is not pushy or domineering by any stretch of the imagination and is very well trained.

I would just watch and see if it happens again. Maybe start a diary and write down when it does happen and what led up to it. Maybe the dog was just bored and frustrated. Maybe an off leash dog was roaming around the neighborhood, maybe he has a bladder infection. Maybe you son smelled like another animal from earlier in the day or something?

are you totally sure he doesn't mark in the house and you just don't know about it?

Thanks so much for your reply. I know that marking is common in un-nuetered males so i have kept a keen eye out....not to mention I am kind of a neat freak and a stay at home mom during the day so I am on top of things in the house.......99% positive he has never done this before.

It was just so strange to have my son come in and tell me "Mom, Indy pee'd on me"....I was so confused!

I guess I'll just have to keep a eye out then. Thanks so much

I only have females right now but was raised with several un-neutered males when I was a kid and young adult.

The way I see it, at this point, you have an "accident". A young dog that eliminates in an appropriate place. The fact it was on your son's bed is maybe irrelevant but I see why it would upset you (mattresses are soakers for urine). The fact that the urine landed on you son is maybe irrelevant and kind of logical when you think about male dogs pee patterns but I see why it would upset you (eeew, soap and water needed !).

Can you describe more precisely the circumstances ?  Your son was reading a book on his bed. Indy was on the bed with your son. Was Indy asleep or half-asleep ? Did he wake up and just started urinating ? Did he play for a bit with your son on the bed and started urinating ?When you took him out to potty an hour before, did he do so ?  Please do not think I think a dog peeing on a bed is fine but on the other hand, it can also mean not much more than a dog needing to pee right then.

If Indy is normally reliably potty trained as you say and accidents happen again (whether on beds, people, or anywhere in the house), my first step would be a thorough urine check and maybe a bladder (and maybe prostate) check. Males are less prone than females to urinary tracts problems from what I know but I like to eliminate physical causes before dwelling on behavioral ones.

     Thanks for writing!

Indy follows my son around everywhere he goes. I was doing my make-up in the bathroom and JoJo was just reading Indy some books, LOL. He was fully awake and being his normal self. Thankfully my son has a really thick comforter and it didnt even soak through to the sheets but as far as accidents go he NEVER has accidents. He is extremely reliable and is good about telling me when he needs to go. That's why I'm so confused. Since then he has been back to normal. When I say he had just gone a hour before it was a good one because we had just gotten out of bed.....jerk puppy, LOL

He marks like crazy outside......ya now the whole perimeter spray, LOL!

Oh, I know about marking in a way. One of my females does not mark in the yard (or house) but needs to leave three drops at least once a block on walks and for sure every time we change directions. She would find her way home just by finding her pee. The other one goes on her merry way and would not think about eliminating off property.

All that to say, just keep an eye on Indy and think about a vet check if he goes in the house again.

I agree that a vet check is in order if this happens again.  Has anything changed in the household recently that could be stressing him out?   I would restrict his access to your son's bed also.  Is there any chance he's been relieving himself indoors without you being aware?  It's hard to know why he did this but he had a reason in his doggy brain. :)
