I don't normally jump into these frays, but I do have first-hand experience to share. Please excuse me if I've told this previously.
In 1994, I was living in Virginia Beach with my husband, son, and two dogs, one of which was Shari. One evening we'd left the house to go for a walk and Shari was attacked by one of the neighbor's pits. The owners were BYBs, and not only could we constantly hear those two dogs fighting each other, we could see them doing so from our upstairs window since they lived across the street from us. Even though the yard had a stockade fence, the male heard us, came running across their deck, and smashed its head into the weak corner of the fence. It took him two hits to break it enough to get out, and then he ran right up to Shari and chomped down on her throat. She was on her leash, which I tugged on, and the motion of her collar slipping over her head was enough to cause him to loosen his grip, though as she ran away, he also bit her ankle. Then as I tried to get back to the house with the other dog and my son, the female pit came out and cornered us. My DH was trying to catch Shari before she got hit by a car. The neighbor finally came outside and was able to get her dogs away from us. To say the least, I was scared out of my wits. It was bad enough my beloved Shari could have died, I didn't know if my son was in danger, too.
I'd never had an encounter with pits before, good, bad or otherwise. I grew up with dogs and wasn't normally afraid of them, but that encounter shook me to my core.
Fast-forward to 2005, when I joined idog. Because of the wonderful information and knowledge available here, I am a changed woman. Would I own a pit? Probably not - I know the limits of my capabilities But I have a respect for the breed and its owners that I didn't have previously. I, too, have been voluteering at the shelter and have handled many pits. It is no more fair to stereotype all pits and their owners than it would be to do so to any other breed and fuel the terror that sensationalism creates. I've felt the fear and have overcome. Some say ignorance is bliss, but ignorance is just that - ignorance.
