Pit Bulls break in home

I invite you to do some breed research, meet some ambassador pit's then come back and give us your opinion

If I had a pittie I wouldn't let him meet my dog.  He's already stated previously that if a pibble was to even look at him he'd mace it.

I resent the fact that you are stating something as though I said it and I never  did.   Try to stick to the truth when debating a topic.  please. Otherwise, I assume you are just trying to be rude.

When I am walking my dog, and I see one of these obviously untrained, out of control, PB's approaching, I feel threatened. I would have to be crazy to feel otherwise. For this reason, I carry a can of Bear Type Pepper spray whenever I am walking my dog.  I pity the poor dog that tries to attack us...

Maybe you didn't outright say it, but you did insinuate it.

But speaking of TRUTH, perhaps you could use a dose of that as well with regards to pibbles.

You do, however, seem pretty quick on the trigger with pepper spray....

Any off leash dog that runs up to my dog in a park, is going to get a dose of pepper spray

That is why I always carry pepper spray when I walk my dog,  always, no exceptions!!!! It only takes a few seconds for a dog to sustain a possible fatal injury.

The idea is to spray the dog prior to the attack.

    Bobsk8,

I am not clear as what position you own whether it be breed specific problem, owner responsibility, or aggressive dogs in general.  You seem to state what other says about the kind of dog you object to and you rebutt when someone characterize the position you seem to own.  I know everyone in this thread has a history together but I don't have a starting point.  Can you state your position on Pitbulls and or aggressive dogs?

I don't normally jump into these frays, but I do have first-hand experience to share.  Please excuse me if I've told this previously.

In 1994, I was living in Virginia Beach with my husband, son, and two dogs, one of which was Shari.  One evening we'd left the house to go for a walk and Shari was attacked by one of the neighbor's pits.  The owners were BYBs, and not only could we constantly hear those two dogs fighting each other, we could see them doing so from our upstairs window since they lived across the street from us.  Even though the yard had a stockade fence, the male heard us, came running across their deck, and smashed its head into the weak corner of the fence.  It took him two hits to break it enough to get out, and then he ran right up to Shari and chomped down on her throat.  She was on her leash, which I tugged on, and the motion of her collar slipping over her head was enough to cause him to loosen his grip, though as she ran away, he also bit her ankle.  Then as I tried to get back to the house with the other dog and my son, the female pit came out and cornered us.  My DH was trying to catch Shari before she got hit by a car.  The neighbor finally came outside and was able to get her dogs away from us.  To say the least, I was scared out of my wits.  It was bad enough my beloved Shari could have died, I didn't know if my son was in danger, too.

I'd never had an encounter with pits before, good, bad or otherwise.  I grew up with dogs and wasn't normally afraid of them, but that encounter shook me to my core.

Fast-forward to 2005, when I joined idog.  Because of the wonderful information and knowledge available here, I am a changed woman.  Would I own a pit?  Probably not - I know the limits of my capabilities  But I have a respect for the breed and its owners that I didn't have previously.  I, too, have been voluteering at the shelter and have handled many pits.  It is no more fair to stereotype all pits and their owners than it would be to do so to any other breed and fuel the terror that sensationalism creates.  I've felt the fear and have overcome.  Some say ignorance is bliss, but ignorance is just that - ignorance.

Thanks for posting the interesting personal experience, Tina.  You see, I don't have a problem with you deciding not to own a pit, just as I have no problem with Bob not owing a gun.  Some people probably shouldn't own either.  What I have a problem with is people telling me what I shouldn't own.

There are a lot of things wrong with this story. The lady had small dogs and a dog door. Did she not have a fence? it seems that perhaps wherever she is that the dogs were able to go outside into the "world" via the dog door? Were the "pit bulls" also "running free"? I guess it is "possible" to have these dogs leap a fence and come into a dog door but it seems unlikely. How big was this dog door? Most people with small dogs have a small dog door. True PitBulls are fairly wide in the chest and I cannot see them easily getting through a small or medium size dog door.

Sounds to me like both "owners" were negligent.

A disabled woman, asleep in her bed. How on earth is that negligent?

Where does it say that the lady had small dogs?
"after the pit bulls attacked the woman they went after a neighbor's Jack Russell...."

How does not having a fence or too big of door make you negligent?

I understand everyones need to discredit bias misinformation against Pit Bulls, but to twist things and suggest that this poor woman brought this upon herself in anyway, to me crosses the line when attempting to defend the reputation of this or any breed. The negligence lies totally with the Pit Bull owners - Period!

I have found that whenever people jump to the defense of a Pit Bull, no matter what the circumstances, the same bullet points are brought up, over and over again.

    1.  The media made up the story
    2. It wasn't the dog's fault, it was the owner.
    3. The Victim did something to provoke the attack . ( they even tried to pull this one regarding a sleeping 6 year old girl, in her own bed that was mauled by a Pit Bull, on this forum a couple of months ago. )
    4. The person posting the story is "ignorant" and they don't know what they are talking about.
    5. The dog wasn't a Pit Bull, but was probably a Golden Retriever of a Lab, and mistaken for a Pit Bull. ( This is really funny when there is a photo of the dog)
    6. If you don't  want to live in a sub-division with a couple of nasty dogs living next to you, you should go over and lecture the dog's owner about being a "responsible owner."....

As I said, this same tired mantra can be read in every one of these threads. In this thread  for instance , a disabled lady that was  sleeping in her bed, is attacked ,  and then  is criticized for having a doggy door that may have been too big.....   Unreal.......[sm=asking03.gif]

I think the same can be said when looking at members with the opposing view points Bob.  There are some topics that not EVERYONE WILL AGREE WITH, and likely NOTHING will change that.  To me though, starting threads that go over the same topics, round and round every single time is needless and does not contribute to learning. IMO, it is like [sm=beatdeadhorse.gif]

Nobody is making lite of the situation for the lady that was attacked here. I am responding to YOUR lack of knowledge and seemingly bias opinion on this breed. I don't recall reading anyone's responses as picking on a disabled person or doggy door being too BIG.

You are entitled to your opinion, that is your right as an American and citizen of this country.

And in a perfect world we wouldn't have issues like this either.

Are we both speaking the same language or not?[&:]???    You asked me why I didn't post the article instead of the link ( please read your own question)   I did post the article, if you will go back and reread it in my OP at the top of page one...... I did not post the link, but if you want that, I can look that up too.

It's not the fence, but the lack of the fence...if one is letting their dog-whether chihuaha, Irish wolfhound or anything in between- wander around off leash.

I, for one, haven't said that this attack was the fault of the sleeping individual.  I have said it is the fault of the attacking dog's owners.  If those dogs were safely contained this wouldn't have happened.

We will never learn the true story behind the attack.  But the owners hold within them the responsibility to control and contain their dogs.  It's not the dogs fault that they weren't contained.  Did they attack?  Yes.  It's sad, but if these dogs are indeed pitties or pit bull type dogs they were performing actions that they were either bred or trained to perform....by humans.  Ay, there's the rub.

I wouldn't go as far as saying the lady had a doggy door that was too big but I do find it odd that the dogs...found the door...went in...found the lady and just attacked her for no good reason...No matter what happened..yes it is the owners of the pits fault that this happened...
Now as far as the hating a certain breed thing...I have to face this all the time because of Kuruk being a wolfdog....I had a cousin over here the other day scared to death of the big bad wolf! Her son wanted to go in the fence with him and she almost peed her pants...I let him in and Kuruk circled and attacked ...lol  Actually Kuruk was like always shy and timid..but he was able to feed him some treats after a while :) She just wanted him out and was freaking the whole time worried he was going to get attacked....( he is 16 btw) I was like....this dog cuddles with me on the couch every night....He isn't a killer just because of what kind of dog he is!!!!
Like others mentioned it's the same as being racist or homophobic to be against a certain breed of dog!

Second thought BOB... Don't bother... I have better things to do than argue or waste my time on someone who isn't open minded..  Beating a dead horse here. Your mind is made up, there is nothing I can do to change your mind set.  [sm=bored1.gif] Next....

    1.  The media made up the story
I'll give you a dollar if you can find where I said this
    2. It wasn't the dog's fault, it was the owner.
Yes Bob, we have been through this.  Dogs are animals.  Animals cannot form intent.  Animals are not responsible for their own actions.  Why?  Because as pointed out, they are a-n-i-m-a-l-s.  Human beings have decided to domesticate dogs (which, once again, are animals) and are therefore responsible for the actions of said animals.  Period.  No ifs, ands, or buts.
    3. The Victim did something to provoke the attack . ( they even tried to pull this one regarding a sleeping 6 year old girl, in her own bed that was mauled by a Pit Bull, on this forum a couple of months ago. )
    See point #1
    4. The person posting the story is "ignorant" and they don't know what they are talking about.
I'll plead the 5th on this one......
    5. The dog wasn't a Pit Bull, but was probably a Golden Retriever of a Lab, and mistaken for a Pit Bull. ( This is really funny when there is a photo of the dog)
Huh, didn't see that anywhere in this thread.
    6. If you don't  want to live in a sub-division with a couple of nasty dogs living next to you, you should go over and lecture the dog's owner about being a "responsible owner."....
Because it's better to just kill all the pit bulls and let God sort them out, right Bob?  Much easier that way.  And why would you care, YOU would never own one of those horrible, nasty pit bulls anyway.  No skin off your teeth.
