So...Meg and Deb, when someone says they're making goulash for dinner, do you expect it to be like beef stew or more like chili-mac?  When I was growing up, my mom would make Hungarian goulash, and when I moved away and was told "goulash" was on the menu and I got chili-mac, I was sorely disappointed.

Goulash is more like beef stew but with the addition of tomatoes and lots of paprika and a little sour cream thrown in at the end for richness.

Precisely. But I hate goulash. My godmother (who is also straight off the boat and met my grandparents back in the day) is an EXCELLENT cook and I long for her chicken paprikash. I've been meaning to try and make it, but I know it will suck and then I'll be disappointed.

And listen, Deb, being Irish does not necessarily make you a good drinker. When I went to Budapest with my grandma, she bought FIVE big bottles of vodka at the duty-free store. We were there for 10 days, but not one bottle made it back. That lady can drink.

I've had it both ways and love them equally. I always add some canned tomatoes and red wine to my stew anyway but the sour cream would be nice to make it creamier. Geesh, now I'm hungry again.

My boss just arrived and he's in a rant and rave mood. It's not directed at me but it still makes me want to run away and hide. He's also the type that needs a ton of affirmation, so even when you want to say "you're being a jerk" you know you'd better say "I totally agree with you". Hmm

Yes, I remember the tomatoes & sour cream w/ the goulash.  I like goulash, but hate beef stew.

And chicken paprikash!!!  OMG - we used to have that, too!  It was one of my favorites.

I am of English/Scottish/Irish/German descent, but was adopted.  My dad's family was right off the boat from Serbia (my adoptive parents were old by comparison - born in 1922 and 1929) and my aunt gave my mom some of her recipes (my mom was from Canada).  I guess I just haven't run across too many people who know what proper goulash and chicken paprikash are.

    Well see then  . . . . . . I was doubly blessed !!!!!

And some people try to pass off their chicken paprikash when it's made with boneless chicken breast. NO WAY. You have to start with the whole chicken breasts, cook them, and then de-skin and de-bone the meat and put it back in. The bones give it flavor! It tastes way better, second day, too. Hmm, maybe I'll try to adapt this into a crock pot recipe.

ALSO, chicken paprikash is supposed to be served over nucadli...don't know how it's spelled, but they are like little noodles, made with flour, water, and eggs.

OMG, yes!  My mom used to make it like that, complete with what she called dumplings, which were the flour, egg, and water mixed.  I remember trying to help her stir that mix for them!

I always thought you were supposed to make it with a whole chicken.

Huh. My godfather doesn't like dark meat chicken, so maybe that's why she made it with breasts.

I look like I was entered in a wet t-shirt contest.  I took the car to mail my swap gift, & to have lunch with DH.  Since it was nice outside, I had the top down.  Everything was going well until out of the blue, it started pouring.  I was wearing pair of capris & a white tank top, so by the time I was able to pull over & get the top up, I was soaked.  DH was quite entertained by this, & I ended up having to threaten his life before he agreed to go buy me a t-shirt to change in to. Hmm

At what point can you disown a sister?  I have 6, two are blood related, one of whom has COLD COLD blood, apparently.  My mom asked her to come over and let Zoe out for the morning while my mom and step-dad are at the hospital for my dad's surgery.  Nah, she's too busy/not interested.  Meanwhile, when my mom asked her to watch the dog so she could go visit her dying brother, my sister declined then, too.  Same sister who had the gaul to be pissed at me for not sending a gift home for her youngest daughter's birthday.  Um, hello - I've been unemployed for 6 weeks!  Seriously!!!

Sorry, livid.  But thankful that I reached a girl at their vet's office (Gracie's old vet, same one used for the Dobe rescue all our dogs came from) agreed to come let Zoe out before work, and even come by on her lunch break.  A stranger can do more for my parents, than my own sister.  The girl kept saying what a wonderful man my dad is, and she even got teared up worrying that he's ok.  THAT's who I want looking after my dogs, for sure!!!!

My other sister, whom I live with here in Denver, is going to fly to NH to help my mom this weekend.  My mom is a total worrier and will be a wreck.  Hard to believe she used to admit people in an Emergency Room - you'd think she could handle stress, but I think with her brother dying recently and my dad's ill health, she's reached her max.  I'm wondering more and more if I should just go back to NH to help her out, be with my friends, back in my network of peeps, etc.  My old dog training pals are all back together, too, and they've become an even greater force in the dog training network, so it would be great to join them.  Pie in the sky dreams for now, I suppose.
