Picking out good names for your pets small rant

We've had human names for all our dogs and I like them.

Our first dog was named Abby because my mom just loves the name Abigail, and she responds to both for call names. Then we had Emma, then for a short time Maddie (Madeline), and now Cooper. I had never met another dog named Cooper before we had him. We were considering calling him something else, but I cannot remember now. It was something cute that made me think of a big, goofy kind of personality.

I like human names for dogs. I think when i get my dobie i will name her Finley, but i'm not sure.

For male dogs, i like Roman, Ronin, Rommel, Cash...which i guess aren't typical human names, but neat nonetheless.

One day, I'm going to have an extreme true hairless, and I'm going to name him/her FLUFFY!  It'll be a pet dog, and probably an obedience dog, but you can't show an extreme hairless like what I'm thinking of (no furnishing to speak of... smidge on the top of the head, few whiskers, and a wispy tail), and it wouldn't be bred. It's silly, and amusing to my strange sense of humor. I love naming dogs. I helped name my friend's last litter of Chinese Crested puppies. I named two powderpuff sisters Tofu (The Other White Meat) and Quii (Blue Plate Special) and the powderpuff boy Lambchop (Had A Little Lamb). The hairless girl from the same litter is Choxie. Cresteds do well with cutsie names, though. They're cutsie dogsSmile

If you guys think that some dogs' registered names are bad, take a gander at some Quarter Horse pedigrees, lol.  Surprise  Where do they come up with this stuff??  Ya, the breeders tend to try and carry over a piece of the sire or dam's name, esp. if they're famous (like Impressive, but boy do Impressive-line owners steer clear of that one now!!), but if you can't come up with something decent that incorporates a sire's name, then just move along.  My old QH's name was Tuff She Ra.  HUHHH????  Who named this horse??  Her sire was "Tuff" something-or-other, can't remember.  We called her Tess, and she was only shown under her registered name at AQHA shows, where we had no choice.  I did have a good sense of humor about it, and would often refer to her as the "Princess of Power" LOL!

My QH mare's registered name is SS Brakay.Confused--it's not even slightly interesting.  Her sire was Bravo Impressive and her dam was Disco Kay, so her ever-so-creative breeders decided to combine the names I guess......Her barn name is Sheena (I didn't name her--lol)

For the record, I think Jack would have been an awesome "Killer."  He is a total attention whore and just about bends himself in half with happiness when people come near him.  Even people who know nothing about dogs cannot miss his body language.

Yet, when I'm walking him around shady people who are giving us looks, I could be like, "Heel Killer!  Goooood boooy...."

I think Sam would make a nice Slasher....he's just so goofy! I'm contemplating calling him Slasher in public, and Taz being called Fang. Just to make people go '....What?!.....But he's so.....friendly! And cute(for Taz/Fang)!!!!!!!" Just for the heck of it....maybe one day at Petsmart......hmmm......Devil

Something you all might find interesting.

My wife has had 2 Guide Dogs in the last 8 years. The dogs are named when born, so no, she didnt get to choose the names. But, how are they named? They have "strings" that coincide with the letters of the alphabet. There is the "A" string, "B" string, etc., depending on birth date order.

Her first Guide was in the "M" string and her name was "Mariah". Mariah had siblings "Marjorie", "Mark", "Martha", "Monty" and "Mustang". Out of these, only Mustang and Martha made it to graduate Guide school along with Mariah. Mariah is retired now, and is our family pet.

Her second Guide was in the "R" string and her name is "Roanna". Roanna had siblings "Ramona" (raised by our local 4-H puppy club, of which we are now a raiser for), "Rondo", "Ripley", "Raisin" (dont ask me, I didnt pick it) and "Remus". Of these, only Ramona made it to graduation along with Roanna. Roanna is still working.

A typical Guide school whelps around 250-300 dogs a year, and ends up with around 75-100 dogs that make it to graduating with a blind person as a working Guide. Thats a LOT of names to come up with in any given year!

Just thought you might find this interesting. Enjoy your evening!

Aha...see...they dropped the "Impressive" from her name.  Didn't used to be that way until they traced HYPP back to him.  Has your mare been tested for that?

I really stink at coming up with names for animals...I usually consult with others.  My mom came up with Harry's name, and it just seemed to fit him.  I was surfing around a rescue site a couple weeks ago, and they had a cute little black lab mix female named Dixie Lee.  I thought that was so cute, and by her pic it seemed to fit her.  Usually I'm not a fan of "double names" for dogs or cats.  Although, come to think of it, my riding instructor always gives her dogs first and middle names.  I think that's odd, but hey, to each his own, right?!

I've met a lot of dogs named Jake (my son's name) and several named Tina.  It doesn't bother me.  Any pets I've had as an adult, I try to pick something that fits their personality.  Bear was named at the shelter and though I think shelter animals' names should be changed, he looked and sounded like a Bear.  Big head, brown eyes, and he grumbles like a bear.  When I was a kid, we named one dog Max after the dog on "The Six Million Dollar Man".  It's really a personal preference and because I've always had mutts and don't care about fancy show stuff, I don't really give a hoot what anyone else thinks! Zip it!

I meet LOTS of dogs named Abby (my daughter's name) and Missy (my first name, Lillian is my middle) lol!   Growing up it always bothered me that there were so many dogs named Missy, now I have a daughter named Abby and we literally have THREE dogs in the neighborhood with that name.  It doesn't bother me though, Abby is my favorite name and while I reserved it for our daughter, I think it's a very sweet dog name.  I don't mind people names on dogs so much at all.

My dogs have "middle names" LOL. They're more like nicknames though. Emma is "Emma Nems" and Ena is "Ena Bean" or "Ena B". That's what they're called about 80% of the time.

She was born in 1986.  Was HYPP the big deal back then that it is now?  We actually have not had her tested.  She never showed any signs of having issues and we never were interested in breeding her, and she's 22 now.  My cousin has an Impressive bred gelding that has HYPP and is symptomatic.  They have been able to control it pretty well with management so far though.  We have a gelding at our boarding barn who carries the gene for HYPP, but does not have symptoms.

As a petsitter, I have seen so many Baileys, Daisies, and Maxs, I have lost count.  Also, being in New England, Tom Brady, or Brady is very common.  I have to laugh to myself because with all of these names, the owners seem to think they have been oh so clever thinking of them!

    • Gold Top Dog

I hear that !! In RRs I know 6 Kobes.... every one's reg name is a clever hook up with the Basketball star, Zion's Daddy is a Kobe, Ch Calico Ridge Threepeat....  hee hee
