and franly if the best I could manage is Lucky then I really did not need a dog.

I take offense to that lol but to each their own as long as the dog is loved and taken care of really shouldn't matter

If you guys think that some dogs' registered names are bad, take a gander at some Quarter Horse pedigrees, lol.  Surprise  Where do they come up with this stuff??  Ya, the breeders tend to try and carry over a piece of the sire or dam's name, esp. if they're famous (like Impressive, but boy do Impressive-line owners steer clear of that one now!!), but if you can't come up with something decent that incorporates a sire's name, then just move along.  My old QH's name was Tuff She Ra.  HUHHH????  Who named this horse??  Her sire was "Tuff" something-or-other, can't remember.  We called her Tess, and she was only shown under her registered name at AQHA shows, where we had no choice.  I did have a good sense of humor about it, and would often refer to her as the "Princess of Power" LOL!

I think it's cute, sometimes, when people have multiple dogs with a correlation in their names.  For example, this weekend we took Harry to play with his two boxer buddies, Oscar and Felix.  That's just a cute pair.  And, to top it off, some other friends brought over their two dogs - Jack, a black lab, and Ginger, a yellow lab.  Jack and Ginger...get it?  Cute, I think.

I guess I'll join some of you in the corner since over the years I've had Ginger, Pretzel, Ruffy, Bud and Max. Big Smile Years ago I ordered some address labels that had a pic of a dog on them that looked a lot like Max.  The caption was "My name is No No Bad Dog.  What's yours?"  Loved those labels!  I had some from the same company (same dog) for the holidays that had the dog wearing a Santa hat and they said "My name is Get Away From the Christmas Tree.  What's yours?"

I like cute....cute is, well, cute. But I do agree with the horses deal. My mare's Reg. name was Diamonds And Rust.....she was a bright 'rusty' bay mare, with a big white star, how creative, right? Everyone called her Diamond, Dia, or D. She had a foal(who died at birth) I had already sold her before the foal, turns out the colt was born May 1. I think I'd have called him Diamond's Mayday(I'm a Mayday Parade fan).  No clue on his barn name. I know a man who lovingly calls his black gelding 'WHOA DAMN IT!!'. He actually had it printed on a T-Shirt. It's cute, and only a nick-name.

I met 2 poodles named Peachs and Cream...both were creamy-red colored, very cute names. Milo and Otis. ect. Very cute.

Edit : fuzzy_dogs_mom - thats cute! kinda like 'Look Whos Talking Now' were Rock said 'My names No' . . . .LOL, love that movie!

I thought after I hit send about all of the Luckys I actually know.   My father has had 3 Shitzus , all rescues all AWFUL little beasts Snarly , snappy and cranky. He adores them and I think sticks with the one name to avoid learning a new one.  My first Show RR was called Lucky by his breeder and I just could not wrap my head around it.... Instead He became Ch Woodridge Bwana's Bon Chance JC CGC The Nod to Luck was given but with a french flair to it.

Our Rescue Lab was named Lucky by the morons who had bought her, she was horribly abused by them and when she came to us her name was changed to Frisco,  She was in the Kill cage when I found her.  When the train used to run from the North to the Beach the last car was the Frisco,

I think because I have had animals all my life and yes I anthroporphise them, names are important to me.  All of my dogs answer to "Cookie"  before they learn their names. And I know I could pick a really awful name  and as long as it was said with enthusuaim and love the dog would happly come when called.    Dogs are much more forgiving about silly things.  I know a lot of breeders who isist on naming the whole litter ,  allowing the owner to only pick the call name.  And I know breeders who will inisit on a theme.  After Hurricane Katrina I whelped a mixed litter for Rescue.  The Bitch was Pricilla and the male was Elvis the shelter apparently felt they were good hound dog names.

Elvis went on to become Shaemus, Priscilla became Hanalei the puppies who I wrote about for our breed were nick named the Casino Row Crew,  the shelter their mother had been dumped at was very close to the casinos ... the name Lucky was suggested over and over ..  the shiney little Lab RRxs had such personality so they became Dice, Roulette, Black Jack, Petite, Lightening, Lady Luck and Gambler.... I had to insist  one home was passed for placement of one of the little guys after he and his girlfriend confided they wanted to name him Craps....  Sadly after they were weaned and passed along in rescue I lost touch with them,  I think of them often.

Luna's registered name had to be one word (we co-own her with the breeder and that is their tradition). It took me the longest time to come up with it, but we finally settled on Incandescent, since she is "marked by brilliance especially of expression" and "characterized by glowing zeal".

I also wanted something relating to heaven/spirituality (light), since Luna was supposed to go to another person, but came to me after a paw reading was done for her breeder. It was almost exactly a year after my grandmother died, and my grandmother was a avid dog lover. I felt/do feel that my grandmother had a hand in sending me this particular dog, and wanted that to be reflected in her name.

Luna, her call name, is sort of related (Moon, even though it doesn't glow with heat, but refracts light). It really came from Lunatic, because she was a wild, wild, wild puppy. There are a lot of Luna's out there, but I seem to like call names that are identifiably doggy (obviously, since I have a Rosco, Lexi and Luna).

I had a rescue ridgeback named Mouse who passed away last spring. She used to be called Colorado but the rescue coordinator renamed her--said she looked like a Mouse.

My latest rescue was Catherine. I almost renamed her Lucky, because that is the dog in the Little People figurine toys and video series.  S/he is a brown dog w/floppy ears and is the dog of the girl twin character. My girl twin liked Lucky the character.

But Catherine answered to Catherine and my daughter quickly learned to say Catherine (her first try was Caterpillar) I really did not want a 110 pound livernosed ridgeback called Caterpillar.

I agree no offensive or embarrassing names for dogs or children.

I do some of my best thinking while first in bed waiting for sleep to take me.  That is when I had the idea to name our soon to be irish setter puppy Dublin.  I knew we would call him Dub more often since we shorten everything whether meaning to or not.  I only drive VW's.  They are also called Dubs.  So I have my Dub in my Dub and they whole thing was perfect in my mind.  I have loads of people tell me how much they like his name, obvious as it maybe.  I have had a Chesepeake Bay Retrieiver years ago who we stupidly called Chessie!  Duh  they are all Chessie's.

We have had two other setters, one Chico (my husband was the Man) and one Casey.  I had a GSD as a kid named Desiree Von der Queddleburg who we just called Desi.  And I had Jax named for Phil Jackson who led our Bulls to so many victories.

One lady at our dog park named her dog Grace Ann.  Lovely little girls name but for a dog to hear her call "Grace Ann" over and over just makes my skin crawl, I have no idea why but I don't really like people names for dogs.

It depends on the name. I like some 'people' names for dogs, but it has to fit the dog very well. I know a little Doxie named Frankie....it fits him very well, my neighbor had a Border Collie/Spainel mix named Tiff, or Tiffany. I've met severle Jack's, and to me that name goes either way, human or animal.

My cat Marijke was called "Coondog" by the shelter! Indifferent

I dislike human names for dogs.  I have a terrible time coming up with unique names.  I run all prospective names by my friend who works in her husband's Vet clinic.  She has heard them all and will shoot down the ones I think are unique when she tells me they have six dogs in their practice with that name. LOL

I have a dog called Infadel.  Anyone else got a dog called that?! There's a story behind it.

I like SOME people names for some dogs.  Sometimes they just fit.  Last time we were THINKING about a dog, it was going to be a terrier and we were going to name him Trevor.

    • Gold Top Dog

I think Trevor is an adorable name. My problem is that I will invariably get the human and dog name reversed.  This has happened to me on many occasions of meeting new people with their dogs with human names.  Some people seem to take offense when called by their dog's name although they shouldn't unless they don't like their dog. LOL

My JRT's name was Oliver when I got him but I changed it to Twister.

Joyce, I had those stickers too and loved them!

I have definite preferences, like no people names, but the only ones that I really dislike are ones that bring negative connotations- like Killer and Cujo. It really does affect the way that people perceive and interact with the dog.

And personally, I only name my animals after food, almost completely desserts.... I've had a hedgehog named Truffles, a guinea pig named Smores, a Shar Pei named Peanut Butter and of course my little angel, Gingerbread. :) Those names are light and happy and make me smile.

Years ago we had a little mutt named Ruffy (DS #1 who was 5 at the time named her) and one day we had her up on the greenbelt.  She got away and was running around on the bike path when an elderly lady came by with her dog.  Her dog took off to play with ours and the lady was yelling "Mary Margared Rose, you come back here! That's not your kind of dog." It made me laugh.  I wondered if someone who would name a dog Mary Margaret Rose would have named their kids Spot and Fido.
