what are some dog "facts" people have tried to convice you about? (jm)

I once had a guy swear up and down that Jack was definitely half rotti.... 

-Feed a dog raw meat and he will go crazy and kill people

-A dog registered with the AKC is automaticly breeding quality.

-Mutts can never excell in any real job because they are not purebred and thus are not right for anything. *eye roll*

-Intact male dogs are aggressive and are prone to randomly attack people and should never be trusted

-All female dogs should be bred atleast once in thier lifetime

-A dog that is even slightly independent is stupid

-Any sort of misbehavior is obviously a sign of dominance and should be treated by pinning your dog down till they stop struggling.

-Pittbulls/Dobes/German Sheperds/Chows are vicious and will attack people

-The more litters of puppies you breed the more knowledge you will have about dogs

You have to end your dog's name in a hard eeee sound if you want them to listen to you.

I can see where this one came from.  The vowel sound at the end does make the name mroe distinctive, but it doesn't mean the dog will listen to you.... or that he won't if you pick a name like Max for example...

Also, cats respond best to names with "M" in them.  Weird as it sounds, that really IS true as far as I'm concerned, I've tested it!  

German shepherds are ONLY black and tan. Kaiser can only be GSD/black lab mix.

The use of the word "seem" in your statement is just you being incredibly polite. The reality, in my estimation, is that your dogs are smarter than them. Often, humans are held up as the paragon of intelligence.

The opposite is actually the case. You can have a dog in a team who is a social leader or one the other dogs sometimes defer to but that is not what makes them a lead dog. A lead dog is one that responds best to human commands from behind while underway, imo.

And I think, in the case of mixes, or even distant sanguinity line breeding, too many people rely on the mendelian math model of genetics. The modern study shows that the math model is woefully inaccurate. That is, in mixing two breeds or two dogs of different lines in the same breed produces a balanced mix of half of each. It does not. mtDNA always comes from the mother. And nDNA, which controls the physiology and structure of the dog, is different in each zygote in conception and this because nDNA is "shuffled" each time. It is possible to wind up with a dog that 80 percent of one and 20 percent of another, even if both parents were purebreeds. So, that also throws out the notion that a mix will be good at nothing.

My Grandfather was a hunter and wholeheartly beleived this, I heard this statement a million times in my life.

It is a myth that dogs are color blind. They can actually see in color, just not as vividly as humans. It is akin to our vision at dusk.

My new vet told me on Wednesday when Kivi Tarro was in for his shots that despite my raw diet being made up of a large percentage of bones, it actually is very low in calcium and I would do better feeding him Science Diet. Hold on. What are bones made up of? What is Science Diet made of? I don't think he knows.

I was hopeful about that one when he told me not to feed my rabbit pellets or lucerne hay, but turns out he doesn't know so much about feeding dogs. At least he was nice about it.

My trainer told me feeding raw changes the dog's behaviour. I can only assume she means the extra energy many dogs have when you switch diets. People have some funny ideas about raw diets. 

THAT "INDOOR DOGS" HERE ON THE TEXAS COAST ( OR ANYWHERE FOR HAT MATTER) DO NOT NEED HEARTWORM PREVENTION PILLS BCAUSE THEY ARE INDOORS AND DON'T GET BIT. DUH! AND AN OLDIE--YOU CAN NOT TEACH AN OLD DOG NEW TRICKS SO YOU SHOULD NEVER ADOPT AN OLDER DOG.  IT CAN'T LEAR A NEW NAME OR WHERE TO SLEEP OR ANYTHING.

I heard this from a lady once while walking Apollo...she asked me what kind of dog he was because he was so big....I said a Labrador Retriever...she then said, "Oh, he's part Labrador part Golden Retriever?" I said, "No, just a Lab, no Golden in him"...she then said, "Well, my son has a Labrador Retriever and he's part Labrador part Golden Retriever, Labrador-Retriever."

I also heard that if you adopt a dog that isn't a puppy it will never bond with you....I'm proof that's false!

A Petco employee asked if Aesop was temperamental yet, when we said no, she said "oh, he WILL" and said he'd grow to bite faces. When we tried to explain that he's from a breeder who focuses on temperament, that we socialize him well, and that he's really quite sweet, she completely ignored it and went into a story about a Chow who nipped at her.  She also ignored our comment that we have a 12 year old Chow who has yet to bite our faces or other appendages This employee has made comments about Aesop biting on two visits...I'm close to writing a letter

and of course, you must always use force with Chows, as they will become vicious and want to show you who is boss
