what are some dog "facts" people have tried to convice you about? (jm)

    Feeding my dogs "people food" will make them refuse kibble and make them picky.  I'm still waiting for my dogs to develop any sign of refusing food of any kind . . .

    The really classic one comes when people find out I feed raw meaty bones from my own flock - that will make them want to kill the sheep, won't it?   I guess this is when BCs show that they are the smartest dogs in the world since they can tell the difference between a dead, skinned piece of meat, and a wooly sheep that runs and goes "baaaa."  Which is apparently something people who hold on to this belief, have trouble comprehending.  Therefore my dogs seem to be smarter than them.

    On the other hand, maybe they are just waiting and biding their time.  But, that would make them waaaaay smarter than us.  So there's no point to trying to decieve them - I think such smart dogs would figure out the connection between meat on the hoof and kibble, too.  Big Smile

    pair = 6

    6 = 36

    36 = 216

    216 = 1,129

    1,129 = 6774

    6774 = 40644

    This is scary  - and it only allows for one litter during a year.  Unsupervised, intact dogs could certainly be responsible for two litters a year, maybe even more.

    Yea the numbers could get astronomical.  But then again it's leaving out other factors...like death.  Death while giving birth, death of puppies during birth, death of mother or puppies after birth, hit by cars, etc.  Not saying that s/n isn't important, just that its a more complicated issue than just exponents

    I certainly agree its leaving out those other factors. But its also leaving out that some litters might be larger with pups surviving and that they could have more then 1 litter a year + the ancestors themselves have litters had the same time, which would make for many more puppies. I just tried to keep it simple with 6 surviving pups from each litter bred one time, the ancestors themselves were not bred and would eventually die maybe early from unnatural causes and there could have been 7-12 pups in the litter with only 6 surviving to adulthood each on average. (Some still born, some die from parvo, some get hit by cars, some have genetic defect, ect)

    Well, my terrier refuses kibble of any kind.. unless it has gravy or something tasty on it. she will, and has gone for days on end without touching her food because it was dry kibble. and NO she hasnt got problems with her teeth. that has been confirmed. but she wont eat raw meat either..... she has no trouble killing something... but wont eat raw meat. she makes my head hurt, that one. lol before she went to live with friends she would eat anything you gave her, including dry hard kibble. not anymore. instead she sits beside you at the table and gives you that "poor little starving waif" look, while her own food is off to one side, totally neglected.

    and yeah my stepmom, when she found out i was raising rabbis and chickens for my dogs dinner she said "wont that make them turn on and kill small animals?" ...... well....... they are dogs after all lol! if the bunny is dumb enough to go hopping into their presence then i can make no promises that it will hop out again. But, when my bulldogs are out patrolling the property they leave the rabbits, goats and birds alone. Kaydee however shows a keen interest in the pig..... (maybe, in her mysterious past, she was a hog dog?) Heaven and Hell will come crashing down upon should those two meet!

    Its my own opinion that many of those "facts" came from someones one time personal experience. and just like people will try to say every pure bred dog is Identical to members of its same breed (i.e. all labradors fetch, retrieve, and all bulldogs fight and are DA) they want to say there is one set standard for all things. So just because their own dog went nuts because it was spayed before having a litter they believe it will happen to all dogs. and because their house dog let temptation get the better of them and ate their canary and hamster that all dogs will eventually do the same.

    Some of these "facts" arent really facts to me, but precautions. a set up for failure if you dont know your dog well enough. Amber for example is a liar. she is a ratter, yes. but she also stays in the same yard as the ducks and turkeys. she even helps us round up the goats for milking. But one night while outside i heard something rustling around in the garden. my only thought was "rat or rabbit"... Amber heard it too and was running the fence and acting like she shared my opinion. so i opened the garden gate and said go get it. The next thing i knew feathers were flying, a bird was squawking, Amber was having a blast, and... just a disaster. HOW WAS I TO KNOW IT WAS ONE OF MY MOMS GUINEAS!!??? They're like chickens! they ROOST when it gets dark! it WAS dark! why was that dumb bird walking around the garden at 9pm when it NORMALLY is roosted in the barn with the others? Needless to say Amber maimed it and i had to end its misery. And this is the dog that walks among ducks, chickens and turkeys during the day without paying any heed to them. so why all of a sudden is she so interested in them at night?

    Yeah, some would say she cant be trusted with small animals but that isnt the case. i sicced her on what i thought was a pest and she happily obliged, but she hasnt done it since then. she still hangs out with the poultry... she still helps wrangle goats.. still kills rats when she finds them in the barn.... but that one night, she lied to me lol my mom says "she knew that bird was out of place".. maybe so.. still....... little demon dog.

    brookcove: i know 2 dogs (different owners) that actually do refuse kibble since they have been getting homecooked, so it's not entirely impossible...

    the funny thing is just that people SO STRONGLY believe that this bogus MUST apply to ALL dogs! (or all dogs of that breed, etc...) also, i believe that some things are more like rumors. people keep telling them to each other without any experience to support it, so the "fact" probably gets even more twisted around with time...

    keep 'em coming! i've had some nice laughs reading these...

    Well as most of you know I have pit bulls so I've heard the most ridiculus things on earth. Its funny that people can wave aside common sense and fall for it.

    The most popular- LOCK JAWS, LOL

     -Pit bulls have more bite pressure then any other breed-NOT TRUE

    -Once they've tasted blood they will become untameable

    -After a certain age their brains swell and they go crazy

    -They'll bite babies faces off

    - A cop once told me they should require a permit like a gun because your basically walking with a deadly weapon, LOL

    -One day out of nowhere they'll just TURN on you

    -If they are people aggressive they are automatically human aggressive

    aurora:

    people = humans LOL!

    i guess you meant if they are dog agressive they are also agressive to humans? hehehe

    I should have added, I wasn't trying to be arguementative.  I understand the need to keep it simple and 6 was a fair pick I think.  I was mainly saying that b/c since it is so complicated I would be surprised if a number like 66,000 in 6 years would happen.  It may be possible, but I'm not sure how probable it would be, with all the other factors.  But it could be.  Anyway, I'm really not trying to argue, I think I'm just not explaining myself well, so I'm gonna hush now.

     BTW I think this topic is interesting, it is AMAZING the amount of crap people firmly believe.

    • Gold Top Dog

    I don't usually get many people trying to convince me of things, but I did just remember one from my vet.

    He said Chows were the worst dogs to get bites from because they could put more pressure in a bite than any other dog and that they were basically Chinese pit bulls. Someone else told me Chows were mean... which isn't so much a "fact" as an opinion.

    Also... I don't think getting bitten by any dog is fun, no matter the breed. And I think that the bigger they are... the harder they can bite. But, whatever.

    • Gold Top Dog

    yeah the whole pounds per square inch, or pressure or what ever DEPENDS ON THE INDIVIDUAL DOG!!

    i mean DAMN .... look at people. are we ALL the same? do all women weigh 130 lbs, are all men muscled and tall?

    can four different men of the same family ALL play professional baseball?

    maybe in a Spartan society where they weed out the weaker links. but .... no. even then.... some are better at some things than others.

    same with dogs.... some labs dont retrieve or have the stamina to swim for hours on end. they either get a pet home(where they are fixed) or they're culled. but that still doesnt mean every lab in the future is going to be better than the last. if that were the case, with breeding programs as they are, those damned dogs should be able to walk on water by now.

    • Gold Top Dog

    haha, yes, i've heard my share about chows. they ARE chinese pit bulls, in that sense, lol. i have actually never MET a pit bull in my life, but i used to live outside of the city (beijing) where big dogs are still allowed and there were quite a few chows there... so funny.. people would be like: "be careful!! it's a CHOW!" lmbo!! (all the while the little terror of a dachshund our neigbour had kept biting people (including me! had to do the whole rabies shots!), but the mellow chow, is the one to run away from. riiiggghttt...

    btw, i have nothing against dachshunds. just that one was the definition of out of control!!

    >edit: said pitbull where i meant chow

    • Gold Top Dog

    I thought that Shar Peis were the pit fighting dogs of China. But I don't know, so I'd never claim that with certainty.

    • Gold Top Dog

    they are? well, i certainly wouldnt know... dont reallly know what goes on with dogs outside of my neighbourhood.. talk about self involved... Stick out tongue
