My Thoughts Of THIS FORUM.

One look at the OP's history of posts yields diverging ideas as to the way his dog is being raised or housed.....very contrary indeed to what is being stated now.

If we haven't been taught very succinctly lately......don't believe everything you read online.

gahustle, I see from your profile that you are 17 years old. I'm glad you are trying to find out more about dogs, and that you will stick around and learn more things.

Be sure not to give in and say nasty things to people because you'll get kicked out of here and then how can we help you?

I think it would be great if you and your dog went to an obedience class together. She'd love it and I bet you would, too.

I doubt you are still reading, but How would YOU treat them??

Even the police and the military are paired up with dogs in ther line of work, and they do not leave their dogs outside continually. They are extremly close with their dogs as they are their partner. They lavish them with attention and keep them in tip-top condition so they can perform their job properly. They are extremly heartbroken when their dog is injured or dies in the line of duty.  I suggest you get a gun for protection instead. Our dogs are treated as dogs, but because you love them, let them on the couch, have the warmth of a nice inside bed when it's raining or below zero outside, let them ride in a car, play with them and give them lots of hugs and kisses, it doesn't mean you're treating them like a human. What it does do is show that YOU are human and man enough to not be afraid to show that you love your companion, because he worships the ground you walk on---you are his whole world.

I dont need a trainer to tell me how to train and how to teach my dog. My dog will learn how to act from how i interact with her. She is intellegent enough to learn quickly.

I would like to say, she's a very beautiful girl.  I have a GSD X and a PB GSD.  Great dogs in any form.

BUT What I would like to ask you; You said you don't have any professional training for the dog (or yourself even), does she have a solid recall or d"drop it"/"leave it" or "release" comand?  As a guard dog this is YOUR OBLIGATION to teach her.  Because if for some reason someone chances trying to break into your house and she does exactly what you want her to do, guard and protect youe home.  If she latches onto siad person breaking in you MUST be able to call her off.  If not someone could die.  She is a large dog. A lot of damage could be done and YOU will be held liable.  YOU could be sued. YOU could face having to put your dog down.

Also...just throwing it out there, have you thought that she may not give a rat's patootie about protecting the house. The YARD yes.  You have made THE YARD HER HOME.  Not the house.  She will likely protect the yard, but once someone is in the house she may not care anymore.

Just some food for thoguht Smile

And to answer your origional question.

My dogs are in the house not becasuse they're human, but becasue they are part of my family.  They are my companions and my friends.
I enjoy their company.  I like to snuggle with them in bed at night, I like that I have my own personal furnace (aside from my husband Wink)
I like knowing they are honoured to protect our family, which in turn is their pack.  We bond we laugh we play.  They will protect their house (which they have prooved to me already) and they didn't have to live outside to learn how to do that.
And with some simple training my dogs don't destry the house, they don't knock things over, they don't potty on the floor.  And you know what, all of this training let us BOND even more! Smile

That's my answer and I'm sticking to it .

I wonder after a few posts here. Why majority treat there dogs , pets, wich ever you call it, Like  he/or she is a human?

I never treat my dogs like humans.  I treat them like horses.  I treat my horse like a dog and the cats like geese.  I like to have a running theme of confusion in my home........

Hmmmm...maybe I treat my dogs like cats. Or is it that I treat the cats like dogs? Sometimes I think my husband would say I treat him like a dog....or is that a cat....or a cat that's being treated like a dog?

Expecting a dog to make the distinction between a stranger doing harm, and a friend of the neighbors son who is rough housing with his fetch buddy, is humanizing that dog.  And IMO not fair in the least.

Allowing a dog inside to sleep is not humanizing it.  A pack of wolves go into their den at sleeptime and often pile on top of each other to keep warm and reassure themselves that all is well.  A lone wolf spends 90% of its time trying to find others of its kind that will accept him.  The other 10% is spent trying to survive.

The OP's dog may not be comfy in the house.  Having never spent any time inside, that's not unusual.  BUT, I can 110% guarantee that the dog would be ecstatic if the OP spent the night outside with the dog.

I was at the zoo the other day and went to go look at the pack of African wild dogs they have. Except no dice because it was kind of a cold drizzly day and they were all in their den. Well, one came out for a second to grab a bone that was on the ground, but he went back in again immediately.

My experience with turning an outside dog into an inside dog is that it is a bit confusing for the dog at first--it's something outside of their experience and there are all kinds of things indoors that smell and look and taste and feel different from what they're used to. But they quickly adjust their expectations. Once Marlowe discovered that there's a lot of things inside a house that are very soft, warm, and cushy, he was pretty much sold. Now if I leave him outside by himself for more than 10 minutes he stands at the door doing a very annoying "arf!" to be let back in again. Maybe some formerly-outside dogs always retain a certain fondness for being outside, but in Marlowe's case I feel like he was an inside dog (and a lap dog!) born in an outside-dog's body. He was apparently not really cut out for it and it didn't take long for him to very much prefer the inside to the outside.

true a dog raised outdoors or in a kennel for its entire life will probably HATE being inside... as was the case with Ben. when we first brought him in he cowards and froze up.. refused to move and if YOU moved too quickly(ie.. normal pace) he would panic and hide....

so i gave him the choice to be where he wanted to be most - which was outside.. - however over time he is becoming more and more interested in the Great Indoors.... especially if Kaydee "Disappears" ...  he hates being without her and will bark constantly.. he's still edgy indoors, but not like he used to be. these days he'll find a place to curl up out of the way. but still, if anyone moves quickly, drops something, makes a loud noise, he looks around as if seeking a quick exit..
