It sounds like YOU are the one treating your dog like a human - you've let her make decisions and are rationalizing her behavior as if she were human.
this is the only wise reply to the OP..... everyone else, sorry, is arguing their opinion and telling him to consult a trainer, etc... simple fact is... he is letting his dog be a dog with no boundaries.. letting her think for herself as if she is human.
as a kid my own dog(shepherd/collie/chow mix looked JUST like his) was allowed to roam the neighbourhood, also had to be tied up at times due to complains, went where ever she pleased... EVERYONE knew her... she had the gall to steal groceries, kill chickens, and even bit my kitten in HALF and left the front half on the doorstep........ i was only 8 years old when i saw that! two months later she attacked some baby chicks we had and crushed them to death.
some people laughed or shrugged it off saying "She's just being a dog" .. others took shots at her. she nearly got maced by the garbage man when she came charging from out of nowhere as if she would bite his kneecaps off. all he was doing was talking to my mom!!
if i had it to do over again she would not have been allowed to act that way. Sandy was a brilliant beautiful dog but she was basically wild and did what ever she jolly well pleased. she did guard our home and us... and everyone elses... she also had a PACK of dogs she ranged with... She and the Doberman across the street were "mates" so to speak.... in all honesty.. my dog was a damned trouble maker! a dog i would not tolerate for a second TODAY. but back then she was MY dog. sure i trained her to sit, lie down, ..... well that was all i managed to teach her.... most of the time she couldnt be bothered to listen to me!
as a kid i begged my mom to lets get an invisible fence for our dogs... my mom said it would only keep ours in and not others out... but.... ours were the ones invading other peoples yards!! not the other way around! we didnt even have a normal fence. my mom worked all the time.. didnt have time or money or nerve to put up a fence..
yes i have a lot of good memories of Sandy. she was a great dog(except for the kitten thing)... some called her "Lassie" because she did look after the kids in the neighbourhood.. but it was pure luck that she was never hit by a car, shot, picked up by animal control, or mysteriously disappear. no, instead she died at the age of 9 from OTC worm medicine.... again... if i had only known then what i know now...
