is it alright to be scared

You should NOT be picking a pup next week!!!
The eyes don't open until they are 2 weeks old, you will not see structure or lameness untill they are up on their legs, aprox 3-4 weeks.

They are not even weaned yet, how can you expect to pick out a puppy..by markings only???

What happens if you pick a puppy and something happens to it before it is 8-10 weeks old?

Also DO NOT take this puppy BEFORE it is at least 8 weeks old, make sure you get vaccination/worming records too

I wish you the best but I'm really afraid for you and your potential new companion

I'm surprised that the breeder would even let someone come to the house so early after the pups being born. I would think they'd be more concerned about the possible introduction of disease. I'm still concerned about this breeders responsibility as a breeder. If I were a stud dog owner, I would wait until the pups were older when they are on their feet so I can see if they are structurally sound and see if there's some show potential. Markings are merely icing on the cake and it's rather moronic to choose a puppy based on markings.. unless you don't show at all and are under the impression that markings make the dog(We have fruit loops who are breeding Boston Terriers and think that correct markings are all what's needed to be a "show dog" which is totally untrue). Does the breeder plan on getting the pups CERF'd before they leave home? Is she selling the pup on limited/full registration? Does she have a spay/neuter contract? Does she have a take back clause where in the event you can't keep the dog, she'll take it back?

Aside from Jaimes and Meilani's points, I would NEVER let anyone close to pups that young.  Yikes, parvo is DEADLY and too easily carried in on shoes, etc.  No one goes near "my" pups until they are at least 6 weeks old.

I agree that the pups would be too young for "outsiders" to come look at them.  I am not a breeder but the breeder I got Dasher from recently had a litter.  I was dying to see them as they are related to Dasher but was not allowed to see them until they were 7 weeks old and I think I was lucky to see them then.  I have known this breeder for about 9 years (she is also my agility instructor) I am pretty sure very few if any outside people had seen the puppies yet.  (They were adorable by the way!![:D])

I also have a good friend who has been breeding/showing for a long time and does not allow visitors until a month or two after the birth.

Please be really careful with picking this puppy, I know you don't want to hear it but part of your responsibility in getting this dog is not to just get one because you've been looking for a long time as I noticed you mentioned quite a bit a few pages back.

We have the experience of some wonderful people here who are clearly telling you to be careful, I can't understand why you would just dismiss that.

Why be in a hurry to get a dog that may have problems.  Believe me, we used all our wedding money and house money on Willow's medical care.  Of course, she was a rescue and not a pup but the point is that she needed tons of medical care from bad breeding.  And, she still continues to have behavioral issues from poor breeding, trying to be weaning too young, trying to be bred too young, etc.  Not to mention MY own mental state, worrying about her health, future, etc.

I'm not attacking you or the breeder of this pup, just trying to share my experience with having a dog that isn't from the right place.

Have you really thought about what you would do if the pup had problems with his health.  Do you have the finances for this??  You have to be able to give medical care and pay for anything that might come up.  If the pup isn't well bred right off the bat your putting yourself at a loss.

Again, I really hope you don't take this as an attack and consider what I am saying.

I'm not a breeder just an owner of a dog who has been thru a lot because of a bad start.  [:)]

My uncle bred dogs when I was little and I can remember nobody saw those pups until they at least 8 weeks old if not older. I remember they were usually pretty big and running around (like 3 months or so)before they were allowed to be out around people except him and my aunt and the vet to take care of them. Around 8 weeks he'd let us in to see them, but no contact until they were older.

And trust me, if my uncle could get one of us kids to do something for him so he didn't have to put his drink down or get up..he would do it in a heart beat but that was one thing he didn't do was have anyone else take care of the pups or momma.

I am so sorry to jump in on this one, i was holding my tounge fo a while, but I must say that puppyluver, you did ask for opinions on this one and when you did not get the answer you wanted, you got a little defensive.

I am not a breeder, but I am very impressed by the know how that Jaime and Glenda have, they are very good at what they do and I would trust them on this.

Just as a point of clarification, I no longer breed.  However, I do foster and I take better care of my FOSTER mommas and babies than it sounds like this breeder takes care of her breeding stock and cash crop.
    • Gold Top Dog
Haha Glenda you take better care of all of your  puppers than most people take of their human babies!

I take very seriously the awesome responsibility of these little lives that are entrusted to me.  And hey, there ain't nothing like the love of a dog to warm your heart![:D]  They don't mouth off or use drugs either!
