Thank you all SO much for all the kindness and support. I truly can't express how healing it is to hear all of the wonderful condolances. I'm doing pretty good, but my kids had mixed reactions. The five-year-old wasn't too bad, but my eight-year-old son was very upset. We talked about how Blackhawk was with his mommy and daddy in heaven and would be there waiting when it was time for us to join him. My son wants to visit his grave to say goodbye. He was still crying this morning so I talked to his teacher to let her know. She said they will probably have a talk with the whole class since another classmate lost her cat this week. It's a Lutheran school so the teacher said she will talk to all the kids about how God made our pets to share love with us and He will take care of them for us now.
It was hard to let go because he had been doing so well after we got his thyroid sorted out. I thought for sure we would have another summer of camping and had already bought tickets for the local rescue's "Fur Ball" and was planning on bringing him along next weekend. When we got Lucy last summer, it was partly because she grabbed my heart when I saw her photo, and partly because I could see Blackhawk beginning to fail and I knew I wouldn't be able to handle the emptiness when he was gone. Lucy has truly fullfilled her role and has been such a comfort. When I got home from the vets she immediately curled up next to me and let me have a good cry. She curled up in the the spot behind my knees that Blackhawk always took on the couch.
Again - thank you for all the support! All of the people on this board are so wonderful!
