My heart and prayers go out to you. I know we don't know each other, but since you asked for support I wanted to give it.
Please, please do not beat yourself up over this. It isn't like you left a pile of baking chocolate on the floor---you left something small on TOP of the refrigerator. You were doing the best you could to keep him safe.
And do not relive what happened and scruntinize it to find every thing you "should" have done differently. As an old friend once told me, "don't should on yourself."
You made the best decisions you could with the information you had at the time. That is all any of us can do. When you knew your dog was in trouble, you got him to the vet.
If you really want to re-think your actions, ask yourself: Over the course of the years with your dog, have you made decisions with your dog's best interests at heart? Have you tried to take care of him to the best of your ability? Have you treated him well?
It sounds like you have.....and that is what you need to focus on. Let go of the guilt as best you can and look at your life with your dog and see all your successes---colitis? my goodness, that must have been rough. How many people have put down a dog for less?
This was an accident, and hopefully it was an accident that he will recover from in enough time to romp in Missouri with you in April.
I know it is hard to see him suffer right now, but hold on and know that many people are sending good thoughts your way.
Best wishes,
Elizabeth
