Unfortunately, I am sad to report that we had to put Blackhawk to sleep a couple hours ago. I called the vets office and talked to them and they said he was unresponsive and they were still unable to draw blood after several hours of fluids and oxygen. Right after I told them I was on my way there, they called back and said he had suffered cardiac arrest and they got him back with cpr. They wanted to know what do do if it happened again before I got there and I told them to let him go. He hung on until I got there and left peacefully.
In a way, it is a relief. When you have an older dog, especially one with health problems you are always waiting for the other shoe to fall. My fear was I'd have to put him to sleep because his body had given out while his mind was still aware. I didn't think I'd be able to stand to see the look in his eyes as they closed. He was already unconscious when I got to him and that made it easier for me.
My husband and father-in-law are out now, digging a grave on the farm next to Blackhawk's father and mother. Whenever the tears well up, I imagine Blackhawk running across the fields with Spike and Jesse. He'd like that. Whenever we took the dogs out to run I could tell that Blackhawk was frustrated that he couldn't keep up even though he was always happy just to be out with us. He had nearly 13 good years. That was even more than either of his parents. But I miss him terribly.
