    • Gold Top Dog
Breed:  Lab x Border Collie (we think)

    Age:  Almost 2

    Walks:  2 or 3 a day...

M, T, TR, F we do 1 mile in the morning and then 30-45 minutes off leash at the park and W we do 4 miles or so in the morning.  Then M-F a 45-60 minute walk with a walker in the afternoon followed by a 45 minute playgroup with the other dogs on M, W and F.  In the evening, if I am up to it, or have errands to do, we do a mile or 2.  If not, we play games/do training exercises inside for 45 minutes or so - it doesn't seem to effect his energy level either way, he is usually nice and tired by 8 or 9...

    Angela,

what do you consider to be a large yard?  I'm wondering how much is needed to make your type of large, active dogs happy?  **and this isn't an attack - its a real question that I just want to know.  It's hard to ask this w/o it sounding mean.  [:)]
    • Gold Top Dog
4.5 year old male Cairn Terrier named Riley

    # of times/day: varies; at least 1

~ distance/day: also varies, depending on weather, if I'm sick, ect.  At least around the block during bad weather and up to 1 mile or so in good weather.
    • Gold Top Dog
Breed: Border Collies, Chinese crested, and a mix
Age: From 13 years to 4 months

Walks: I don't walk the adult Border Collies as rule, though we go down often to the pond (about half a mile one way, plus lots of running around down there). They run literally miles doing chores and need to conserve their energy. Zhi and MAggie come with me doing non sheepy chores, and to the mailbox. That may entail a mile or so of walking a day. Ted also comes with us on these trips, though he's no longer coming out amongst the sheep with us when I've got things to do. He's reached the age where it's a constant nag battle to keep him at my side instead of attempting to work the sheep. Once he's well started he will be able to come out again because he'll know better than to freelance. Patrick takes Rocky on two walks a day, about a mile each, and I give him one good romp too (Rocky, not Patrick).

Although we have a large pack here and plenty of room, very few of the dogs actually have free play time together. The adult BCs crash between chores, and Rocky is in intensive training, leaving a small play group of just Maggie, Zhi, and Ted. Ted is also getting ready to enter intensive training mode. I don't rely on free play - I just got into the habit of regulating this because BCs careening around can be a rather dangerous situation. I have a friend whose dog was killed when her diaphragm was torn, just from slamming into another dog at full speed.

Cyrus, 1 & 3/4 year old American Eskimo X. If I'm feeling up to slogging through the mud and rain at the off-leash dog trail, he gets about two miles. Three miles if I'm feeling chicken, and decide to stick to the pavement towards the marina. :)

Wow you guys are all in good shape. If I walked a half a mile I'd have to crawl home. I don't walk my dogs enough to mention but they do have a big yard to be nuts in and after all, most of them can do good laps on the couch.
    • Gold Top Dog
Breed:  terrier mix and shepherd mix
Age: terrier is 13 years or so, shepherd is around 2 years

Walks: one walk right before bed, around 10 or 11 p.m., weather and health of DH permitting, about 1/4 mile for the terrier and 1/2 to 1 mile for the shepherd. We have a large fenced backyard frequented by mice, voles, a rabbit and neighbor's cats (on the outside of the fence), so they've got a lot of things they must check on during their multiple daily patrols.

Pofi - unknown mixed breed with long legs - 2 years
Mia - golden retriever mix - 1 year

    # times per day  - try for two, never less then 1

average distance per walk - 2 miles.

We have a fenced in yard for play and a 40 x 15 foot playroom above the garage where we can chase balls and tug on toys in inclement weather.

We also go to dog parks, especially on weekends - our favorite is about 4.5 miles of hiking round trip.

Ben - 8 month old Lab.

He gets 1  walk a day, lasting between 1 and 2 hours, every day no matter what the weather.  Those walks include some or all of walking, running, playing with other dogs, playing frisbee or fetch with me, and swimming.  If we're working on his leash manners and I am walking him on the sidewalks around the neighbourhood, he'll get another off-leash walk as described above later on that day.  Since he's still a puppy I am careful of the dangers of over-exercising his developing joints, so the vast majority of his exercising takes place on grass or in the water.  When he's older and his joints mature, I'll switch to 2 1-2 hour walks a day.

ETA:  We also work on a lot of mental stimulation in the house.  "Tracking" treats, hiding his toys and getting him to find them, obedience and trick training, and using kongs, treat balls and buster cubes for food.

Peanut, GSD/Rott mix, about 16 months
    Draico, GSD, about 13-14 months

At the very least 3-5 miles walk every other day, especially when I'm in school.  During breaks, it's a 2-3 mile walk daily.  Plus, we have a 1.5 acre fenced in yard that they run around in everyday for hours; their favorite game is fetch with the chuck-it.  They get their training in the yard, right now we're working on searching, just for fun no intended for search & rescue.

Also, they go to the dog park at least every 2 weeks for interactions with other dogs and people.  But after our last trip, and the disaster, I'm reluctant to go.  We'll go again, but I'll have to be extremely cautious & scope the crowd!!

My dogs live on two acres, so they are out and about the place with me a lot. They also engage in free play with each other in our pen.
I exercise them by playing ball, frisbee, and doing some training each day.  Two of them do agility for fun.  We take walks, and we run on the beach (rather, they run).  So, I vary it up quite a bit.

    Tasha -- 7 year old Golden Retriever/Chow
    Wolfgang -- 5 year old Malinois/Akita with mild/moderate dysplasia
Floyd -- 6 year old (or thereabouts) rescue Malinois

Tasha and Wolfgang start each day with a 15-20 minute trip to feed feral kitties. This is done far more for mental stimulation than exercise. Floyd prefers to stay home and watch the other human prepare breakfast for the dogs.

Later we try to go for off leash exercise of about 30 minutes. On weekends and school holidays there's a school right next to us. If not, they have to go in the car to a field we have permission to use. Once or twice a week they will share the school with other dogs, but for the most part, Tasha & Wolfgang prefer each other and Floyd prefers to play ball.

Tasha gets an additional morning walk of about 30-45 minutes by herself. She loves walks and feels it is her right to have a walk completely dedicated to her. Once again this is about mental stimulation.

During the day, they play a lot with each other and since we live by a school, they are always checking out the activity. Wolfgang trys very hard to get noticed and petted by the employees. I had to ask them not to give him treats. They gladiate a lot with each other and sometimes Floyd will get some "backyard ball".

In the evening Tasha & Wolfgang go to visit hugrandma and her three dogs. Tasha loves small dogs and takes great interest in them. Wolfgang loves Grandma and the treats she provides. Floyd and I either play ball or go for an off leash walk of 30-45 minutes.

I have 2 lab mixes, 1 is 3 years of age, the other 2 years of age.
I usually try to get in one walk a day. Some days are longer walks then others. We moved to a place that is colder than what they are used to and rainier. Some days they don't want to go out much, and if they do it's to sniff around not walk.
Being a mixed breed, they don't seem to be hyper active. I know some dogs are up and at 'em at the crack of dawn, for food and walks. My dogs sleep on my bed, and I'll get up to start the day, they will raise their head and just look at me and go back to sleep. Their mom was like that too, and we used to share a backyard fence with her owner and they ran about outside for hours with her, coming in exhausted. Now we live in a smaller area and they aren't as interested as being outside for very long. So I try to get them out for a daily walk and some play time with me in the backyard.
