What kind of things do you hate that irresponsible dog owners do?

Again, when the irresponsibility of the owners leads to the dog paying the price.

Went over yesterday to check on our little stray friend and take him some food.....the run next to his contained TWO new additions....two pitties.  They had county license tags on, their nails had been recently clipped and they appeared to be well taken care of....BUT, there they were, in the county stray center.  This is NOT a posh facility.  Its outside runs covered with tarps and pieces of plywood attached to the sides to cut down on the wind.  And of course, when the police bring a dog in after the staff has been there to feed and tend, they get NOTHING in the way of food, straw for bedding, nothing......so those two dogs could go 24 hours without a bite of food....except I slipped them a little since our little friend HAD been fed......

The little beagle who came in also Friday nite, is still there...she has a county tag as well.  Our little guy, who the owner is known....and the two pitties......all spending some less than pleasant time in the county lock up because owners can't do their jobs.

That's why I'm glad that I don't work at an animal shelter anymore. I couldn't take it... The extreme neglect cases were the absolute worst. [:(]

Most of my peeves have been covered, but here some top ones:

    1. Crate their dog all day and all night.
    2. Chain or kennel their dog in the backyard 24/7
    3. Think the dog understands english and constantly punish the dog when he demonstrates that he doesn't
    4. Leave poop lying everywhere even though the park provides pick-up bags and garbage bins practically every ten feet
    5. Think it's funny when their little dog attacks me or my dogs

Wow, this is a good thread, but i'll just stick to a few:

1.) I hate it when people think that getting a dog from a pet shop is 'high class' Namely my aunt and my boss's wife (well ive got news, you couldve spent 800 dollars less and gotten a MUCH more gorgeous dog)

2.) People who get a dog and quickly lose interest: My boss's wife has a little Chi that they found, and she told me she no longer wants her. When I ask her why she tells me 'Oh just because'

3.) Those that feed Pedigree, just because its a really popular food, and has so much meat on the bag! Its also what veterinarians recommend. Oh yeah, and they refuse to believe ANYTHING I tell them about nutrition.

4.) People who actually buy from a breeder, but chose the one who breeds Imperials, Teacup, Toy, and Tiny Teacup, and pay 1k or more for a dog who is way off standard

I hate when people get dogs who are supposed to be and are known to be very energetic and then decide they don't want the dog because it has too much energy. [:@]

I have just experienced this at work.  I just found out that one of my favorite dogs who comes to day camp (a black and white JRT) was almost given up because of this reason.  I just hope that if she does decide to give him up she comes and tells us first.  He is the sweetest dog.  All he wants to do is curl up in your lap and sleep (he is the most unenergetic JRT ever).

I agree with everyone on everything and if these three things other things where mentioned I'm sorry....
    1. "what breed is that" A Bernese Mountain Dog "oh I just love that breed"- well if you love that breed sooooo much then how come you didn't know what it was...........Here's your sign.....
    2. People who complain about there dog begging at the kitchen table and then after they are done eating and still sitting at the table let them have something off their plate or something in one of the dishes off the table
    3. People who say "its just a dog who cares what they eat......."
We were at Walmart and walked over by the dog stuff to look at the dog beds for our cat (i know she's a cat but she loves those cozy kind with the fur inside) and I over heard a lady say as she was picking up a bag of Ol' Roy to the lady she was with " well its just dog food, theres no difference in this stuff and the stuff you buy at a pet store except that this stuff is $10 for a 40lbs bag and the stuff at the pet store is $40 for a 20lbs bag" My husband pulled me away before I could say anything.....it was probely best.....

Walking dogs off lead in a heavily populated suburban neighborhood like mine.

Walking dogs off lead in the surrounding wooded areas of a heavily populated suburban neighborhood.

When I ask them not to come any closer because my dog is reactive and I don't want to test her limits.  And they still come in closer despite my pleas.

Dog owners that breed their dogs for money, after they bought those dogs at a pet store and none of them have good conformation to standard and no health testing was performed.

Owners that know NOTHING about the dogs that they have: "why does my BC try to herd me?" "Why does my pittie mix not get along well with other dogs?"

And of course owners that think that an Ecollar is the best way to train their dog without trying any other method first.

So, you've got this lovely and very freindly girl sitting on death row because her owners were not responsible enough to research before bringing her home and make darned sure that she was safely and securely contained. I'm sorry, I don't blame the dog for this....a lot of her actions were genetic and hardwired from our lovely dogmen.......

And the kennel workers, with absolutely no personality at all, acting like because she attacked a dog she is human agressive when all the little gal wanted was some love......

Yep Glenda, you got that one right!

    1.  People that do not clean up after their dog.
    2.  People that tell their children that your dog is going to bite them if they don't behave.
    3.  People that talk on their cell phones while walking their dogs.

1 ...People walking dogs off leash and have no clue how to control the dog..So I have to deal with it running up to my Dog snarling and growling
2..loose dogs with no owner is sight...we have leash laws ..I guess some folks think their above the law or just dont give a damn about their dog

These are all good ones!! One of my pet peeves that my friend and I happen to be discussing this weekend is when I see very young puppies being dragged around town on leashes. I am not talking about people taking their young dogs to be socialized, I am talking about very young puppies being practically dragged down the street, the puppy is obviously tired and should be home instead of hanging out on the street corner with their irresponsible owners. I dispise people who chain their dogs and just leave them outdoors all the time.

I dispise backyard breeders (who are also owners)

I dispise people who stereotype my breed of choice without having any knowledge about them

I dispise people who are cruel to, abuse, or neglect their dogs

I have so much that I can say but I'll just stick to those three for now.

    I despise poor spelling. [;)]

Quite right. I hate all those things, too. It's hard to decide which ones to mention. [:'(]

I can forgive most of the things above and just shake my head.  I can not forgive people that abandoned their dogs for any reason.

I hate it when people buy a purebred dog (not even considering the source at the moment) and plan to or do breed their dog, "to get their money back"
    • Gold Top Dog
I hate when people buy a purebreed dog for its looks. They don't bother to research the breed to find out what it was made for, work drive, or any other factors. The poor puppy ends up at the pound about 1 year later because of irresponsible owners.

I also really hate ungroomed long haired dogs. Mats drive me nuts and I know the dog cannot be comfortable.

Ug! I used to work at a grooming shop when I was in high school. All I did was bath, dry and brush.

This is just another example of how stupid people are: This happened almost daily. People would bring in their no shedding breed totally matted and expect us to leave the dogs hair long. "Don't shave it."

My boss, the groomer's, response was, "There is no way I can brush this out unless you want me to torture your dog, so why don't we give him a short hair cut this time and next time if his coat doesn't have as many mats we can leave it long. But that means your going to have to brush him, Mom (or Dad)."

and then they'd respond with "oh but he doesn't like to be brushed." Ahh, well then keep his hair short so you don't have to brush him. And if he doesn't like you to brush him he certainly isn't going to like it when we yank out all his mats.

Here's a positive story though: This big biker looking older man with a big beard owned this little black toy poodle. He kept it shaved completely - not even a top knot on his head. During the winter the little guy had all of these little coats. A different one every time he came in. I think the guy was a trucker and the poodle was his truck companion. See, there's a good owner.

I work for a groomer and she also refuses to de-mat an animal. A few little ones ok..but not the big stuff. She has a form that she gives people explaining about mats and the harm they can cause. I am still shocked at the people who come in and dont' get it. We have  people come in who want her to shave a poop path and thats it..leave the rest of the dog a mess because they don't want to pay a grooming fee. (yes, she refuses)
These people need a short smooth coated breed or nothing at all.
Another thing that bothers me is people who buy a Poodle and then come in and tell her.."I don't want it to look like a Poodle"..then why did you buy a Poodle????

We also have a customer that is a truck driver... big burly guy who has a Chihuahua named Gertie, he custom made her a car seat that is elevated so she can see out the window. It has a bed under it like a little den where she can go to sleep if she wants. He buys her all sorts of clothes. He will come in when he is about to long haul to someplace cold and buy her new coats and sweaters. He is crazy about this dog and it shows. He asked me to show him how to trim her nails and clean her ears, he feeds her really good food and best of all..he expects her to have manners..and she does.
