What kind of things do you hate that irresponsible dog owners do?

I hate when they think that certain things will hurt their dogs.  I also hate when they let their dogs run after mine.

This thread could be a long one.. lol.
I'm going to restrict mine to 2....

I hate it when they let their dogs off leash in an area that has a leash-law.

I hate it when they let their dogs poop on my lawn then walk off like nothing happened.
    • Gold Top Dog
I hate that, too.  There are these people down the street that walk their chocolate lab off-leash.  My dog doesn't even like larger dogs.
    • Gold Top Dog
    There are so many!!
Leaving dogs tied out with no water, food, attention, shelter
I have met some that didnt even bother with any basic vaccinations or de-worming
People who get rid of one dog only to get another
    just a few!!

This is not directed toward anyone on here, so no one take offence.

I hate when irresponsible owners of small, unruly dogs think my large, well-behaved dogs are far more dangerous than their dogs. Small dogs bite too, and for once, I'd like to walk into my brother's house without getting mini-mauled by his dog.  I also hate when owners of large dogs brag about how their dog could "whoop" mine. First of all,  I own a laid-back, sleepy Lab and a big border collie mix who likes to eat strange objects. Neither are concerned about fighting, and neither am I. Secondly, how insecure can someone be to have to brag about something that ignorant?

People who let their dogs outside unsupervised without I.D.
That $5.00 tag makes it go easy to get them home if they are lost.

People who have aggressive dogs and inproper fencing.  I've had
dogs bend the chain link, jump little fences, etc. We can't walk in the neighborhood without some dog trying to get us.

Dog/cat dumpers and the people who sit outside Walmart with
puppies for sale in a box.

I have to admit that I would rather see the puppies for sale rather than dumped in a bag and tossed in the river.

I hate when people give away/sell puppies waaay too young, won't train their dogs in even the basic commands, feed them garbage (and then ask me why Gypsy's coat looks so much better than their dog's fur), and people who don't spay/neuter and then are incredulous when their bitch "gets herself" pregnant (how? with a turkey baster?) and call her a "slut"[:@] or their dog gets the bitch next door pregnant through the fence and can't believe that they are asked to help care for the puppies!

I also hate all the lies people tell when they drop off their pets at the shelter.

Here are a few of my peeves:

-When people (who CAN afford better) just feed Ol Roy, Pedigree, or a food like that because they never bothered to do any research and that food is convenient to pick up at Walmart or the grocery store. [:-]

    - When people have a breed that they can't even spell the name or pronounce. It's one thing when the average person doesn't know those things, but when you actually OWN (or even worse breed) that dog and don't even really know the breed name, yikes. How much research could they have possibly done? That in my opinion is pretty irresponsible.

And here are two examples of extremely ignorant people:

I was working at an animal shelter in California and the animal control officers would frequently pick up wandering dogs. People had to pay a hefty fee to reclaim their dogs, it was up to several hundred dollars depending on whether the dog was not licensed or spayed/neutered. So people were frequently very irritated when they had to pay $200 to redeem their lost dog. Anyway, once I brought a dog out to his owner and I was walking away the owner SMACKED the dog on the head and started scolding him for running away. [:o] How in the world did she think the dog had even a clue what she was doing. All her dog knew is that his owner starting smacking and yelling at him. [:(]

The other situation is one on myspace.com.  I was reading a girl's blog (web journal) and she described something that happened with her dog. It's a black Lab that was hiding under her bed. She reached under and he tried to bite her. So then she gets out the vacuum cleaner to scare him out from under the bed. Then I think he went to hide under something else so she got a treat to get him out and then DIDN'T give it to him to "teach him a lesson". Where do I even start with how many things she did wrong! Everything she did was a major trust destroyer. [&o]

Right now I annoyed with irresponsible cat owners.  Biscotti started barking furiously at 5 am, so I got up to find a cat sleeping on top of my Jeep.  I shooed it away, which made Bisc run out the dog door to bark and wake the neighbors.  Good morning world...Mom's awake now!

When people don't teach their dogs basic manners. I will not tolerate my dog: shoving past people, biting people's fingers when they give her treats (although she needs constant reminding), running around totally out of control, jumping all over people, not sitting if she wants food, eating food out of people's hands without being offered, lunging at people or dogs when we're out walking, generally making a nuisance of herself.

It mind sound harsh, but I just don't like rude dogs and I like their owners even less. Teaching a dog life skills not only makes owning it a whole lot more pleasant and rewarding for you, but it makes for a happier, better adjusted dog as well. I like rude dogs about as much as I like rude kids. It's just not that hard to teach them manners. My dog is naughty sometimes, but she sure doesn't get away with it. That's all I ask.

People who ignore their dogs for the most part. Our neighbours had a dog for years that they got when the kids were still around. They never kept her in and just fed her and that was about it. The only thing any of them ever taught her was to attack other dogs on cue. She was so starved for attention that she attacked other dogs every time one approached when she was with you. It was the one thing her people had taught her, so she used it all the time, thinking that's what we'd want. I used to run her through a quick obedience session whenever I saw her on the street. She was mostly BC and lived for the moments when someone told her what to do and she could do it. She learnt astonishingly fast and was so sweet. It was heartbreaking to see how eagerly she showed me what she could do every time I saw her.

Thankfully, I wasn't the only one in the neighbourhood to have a soft spot for her. Someone took her in when the kids moved out and she was the only dog those neighbours got to ever die of old age. Is there anything worse you can do to a dog than to routinely ignore it? It's like constant torture.

I've gotta agree with Tamara on not knowing the breed or how to pronounce it.....I could understand JQP not knowing how to pronounce a dogs breed, but one would think that the owner would know that a doxie is not a DASH hound....pronounced the way it's spelled here....

On a more serious note......the irresponsibility of owners in soooo many areas and the dogs having to pay for that irresponsibility.

Case in point...when I went to the shelter to check on our little friend "Spot" I was talking to the gals and noticed a pittie.  I'm thinking a mix or one of the other varieties because she didn't have the ultra muscled front end like Jaimes dogs do.  I asked about her after greeting her and having the kennel working scream that she would take my face off.....um???  through the fence???

her:  she's mean and dangerous.  She's in quarentine and the courts will probably order her put down..

    me:  what did she do?

her:  she attacked another dog BAD and almost killed it

me:  (after asking about the survival of the other dog) But as I understand the past breeding, these dogs were for years bred for fighting and that's a pretty tough thing to overcome...

her:  well she knocked over a 3 year old child to get to her dog.  and the child was in her own yard a couple blocks from where the pit lives.
(I asked, the child was completely uninjured physically, but I'm sure this was a pretty emotionally tramatic event for a little one)

me:  oh, so the dog was loose and unattended??

her:  yeah, she got out of her fence.....some dogs you just can't contain.

me:  so because the pits owner didn't do their job properly and contain their dog safely and securely, another dog was seriously injured, a child traumatized and this poor girl will probably have to pay for it with her life?

her:  these dogs can't be trusted.....

me:  apparently the owners can't either.  Don't you feel that THEY have any responsibility for what happened?

her:  other than being stupid enough to own a dog like that?  Nope.  The dog is mean and dangerous.  (this while she was laying her head in my hand through the gap in the gate).  It's up to the courts but I for one hope they put her down.

So, you've got this lovely and very freindly girl sitting on death row because her owners were not responsible enough to research before bringing her home and make darned sure that she was safely and securely contained.  I'm sorry, I don't blame the dog for this....a lot of her actions were genetic and hardwired from our lovely dogmen.......

And the kennel workers, with absolutely no personality at all, acting like because she attacked a dog she is human agressive when all the little gal wanted was some love......

    Sorry....stepping off my soapbox now.....

I dislike owners who do not properly train their dogs and socialize them.

    • Gold Top Dog
Do not let your dog sniff my dog or touch it.  I know what vaccines my dogs have had but I do not know how well you take care of your dog.  overly paranoid I guess.

Do not let your dog run.  I understand dogs need excercise but it needs to be done in a safe place.

I hate when people with sick dogs let their dogs socialize with my dog at the vet's office waiting room.  I was waiting one day with my dog for a check up.  Another lady had her dog there for a third visit for parvo treatment.  She was letting her dog sniff and get cozy with another dog in the waiting room.  That other lady was so mad when she found out that that dog had parvo.

I hate when people don't get their dogs spayed/neutered and then let them run loose.  We live on a very, very busy street and my neighbor was so upset when her unspayed pregnant cat that she let's run loose got run over by a car.  Duh!!!

I am sure I will think of more but that's the biggies for me.

The list is long..but since this has happened a couple times in the last couple of days it's fresh on my mind.

When people bring their dogs into a shop and allow them to try out toys and then put them back. Nobody wants to buy a toy for their dog that has already been slobbered on by another dog! I have had people get really angry at me when I just go ahead and ring up the toy their dog macked on. They are incredulous that I expect them to pay for it.

Along those same lines...it irritates me when people come in and use the self serve pet wash and then take their sopping wet dog into the retail section. 1) we provide really expensive dryers for them to use to dry their dog  2) if they don't want to use the dryer, we also provide all the towels they want so they can dry their dog reasonaby well before venturing into the retail section 3) they most certainly can shop BEFORE they bathe their dog.
Allowing their dog to walk sopping wet through the store leaving the floor wet and dangerous for others to walk on and shaking water all over product makes me want to slap an e collar on the owner!
