Straw Poll

It is basic economics.  In any business, the cost of labor to produce a product or deliver a service must be less than a certain percentage of sales.  Usually, this number is around 50%, but it is often significantly less, depending on the operating margin a business has.  Let's use a very simple example.

I want to say I find your "economics" lessons laughable, but that would be quite rude for me to say that now, wouldn't it? [:D]

The discussion of minimum wage is far more complex than what you portrayed it to be in this thread. Even some of most traditional Chicago school of economists are doubting that their predecessors' conclusion about minimum wage now and have been for a while... Wonder why, huh? When it's obviously crystal clear to *anybody* that raising minimum wage is detrimental to economics...

"The poor will always be with you"

That's true.  If minimum wage increases, then everybody's salary has to increase as well.  It's all relative.  If you're gonna pay someone with no formal training $15/hr., than what should someone with a degree, formal training, etc.  make???   There will always be a heriarchy no matter what the minimum wage is.  Education and training are the key to a higher paying job, not waiting for the government to raise the rates.  Raising someone's wages at Wendy's will only raise mine in the long run.

Raising the minimum wage would never hurt the lower or middle class families.  That's a silly idea.

LMAO.  Don't they even teach VERY BASIC economics in school anymore?

Let me ask you this.  If McDonalds raises their entry level wage to say, $10 an hour, are you under the impression that they wouldn't also have to raise their prices?

Most fast food restaurants pay $8 an hour now, or they do around here.  Not far from $10 an hour.  McDonald's, along with other fast food joints, has raised their prices.

Inflation has risen, though basic wages have not.  Since people are burdened with rising prices, shouldn't they be paid more to offset the rising prices?  The economy is at its best when money is freely spent, as opposed to being saved.

do any jobs actually pay minimum wage any more? even the corner mart here pays $10/hr to start. who in their right mind would try to support themelves or a family on merely $5.75/hr? that person would turn to gov't assistance first in most cases.

oh, i love this. i'm middle class to a t. unless and until i get a college degree, it is looking doubtless that i can even get a mc-d's job. why? the beloved minimum wage increase. employers are now hiring less people to make up for the wage increases- case in point- NO ONE IS HIRING, especially for those minimum wage jobs that were once so easily acquired. so i am forced to spend money i dont have on an education (which i want, but not the point) in order to have an actual career since getting a run-of-the-mill-job is getting so rediculous to find. i'm glad all the people that already have a job are profitting though.

and fwiw, i know what its like to have no insurance. after the birth of my first child i had a pap smear come back showing possible cancerous cells and was told to get an expensive test done to confirm. at the time i had no insurance and certainly not enough cash to get the test, and it was one they wanted paid for at the time of service. so i waited months in horrible suspense while saving up money to get it done, just as much time as i would have waited if we had a national health system. i spent many years without insurance and always had to make do, but that in no way has made me want a national healthcare system and i never will.

If they want to be paid more that is their problem, not the employers.

The thing is, 6.25, or whatever the minumum wage is in your state, is only the bottom of the ladder.  The way this courty works is that you don't hve to stay at the bottom of the ladder. Now you can make some bad decisions and say that they made you stay there, but for every one person who has said they can't do something because of their circumstances, I could probably give you one who could. When I get a job, I'll have to start at the bottom of the ladder, just like everyone else, but I am doing things that will affect my future so that I wont have to stay there.

    Moderator hat is on.

Keep it civil and keep it on topic...which was I believe who you'd vote for out of the candidates given. This is NDR, so off topic is less a big deal...BUT I am now asking if folks would like to pursue the other bits of this thread...minimum wage, goverment in general, Health care, make a new thread, which is also to remain civil.

This one is to be kept ON TOPIC from now on. I hope that's clear.

    Thank you.

I finally get to vote next time and I would like to see the republicans run Condi and the dems run Hillary just to see what happens. Hillary is whacked out so I'd vote for Condi of course. Wouldn't that be an interesting time. Every single month both of them would start a big smearing campain.  The problem would be is that what if one of the woman got president and during PMS decided to nuke a country. That would be bad, but I doubt anyone would mess with us then.

Ok, well we have been warned to stay on topic

Aina, yes you were...that includes final "digs". Please do remember that. Your post was edited to remove unrelated content.

I'd kind of like to see Hilary run against Condi too.  [:D][:D] Both the bigots and the sexists would sure have their knickers in a knot.  Probably most of them would just stay home and pull the covers over their heads until it was all over.

i thought the afore mentioned issues were directly related to the "why" part of who we would vote for, "input for the pollsters" [&:]
