I've never had a bite go off after 10 weeks. One good rule of thumb is...if you can insert a matchhead between the top and bottoms when closed (on a small up) the dog will always be overshot.
Just something an old houndsperson told me. Bite's aren't a big deal in hounds really, but no one likes the look of an overbite. Lack of underjaw is somewhat of a detriment cosmetically...I would imagine in a Schutzhund dog the bite is more important?
Bummer, maybe he is going to come around fine, it really would depend on the lines and what his parents mouths looked like and what he looked like as a small pup.
Yeah the matchhead is actually what they use when the do the breed survey. If the bite is not absolutely perfect, the dog is not KKL1. If the bite is more than a matchhead apart, the dog is not eligible for KKL2 and must be "banned". Nikon had one stuck in his mouth when he was 13 months and the judge excused him from getting a dental certification (I just wanted proof he had *all* his teeth in case of an accident in training, but luckily the judge excused him rather than note the overbite and put it on the pedigree).
This degree of overbite really makes no difference in Schutzhund. Nikon's is purely cosmetic. There are some dogs that need some sort of intervention b/c the bite causes other problems in the mouth but for Nikon that's not the case. I do think his overbite makes his jaw a bit undershot and I don't like that look either. I really couldn't care less about the bite when it's purely cosmetic, but it needs to be a perfect scissor bite as far as the standards go.
How long do dogs teeth? I know Pan's top teeth are new b/c they are very shiny and bigger, but maybe the bottom ones aren't new yet?
I have copies of Pan's parents' breed surveys so I'll check their dental charts...
