What have your dog(s) been mistaken for?

LMAO! Wow. I needed a laugh today and reading these posts sure did the trick. A why-men-hammer? LOL. A guinea pig Chihuahua? Wowowow.

Pretty much everyone knows that Daisy is a Chihuahua. Penny gets mistaken for a Chihuahua all the time, even when I walk them together. They look nothing a like, other than being small. Penny has mile long legs, an athletic build, black/tan, docked tail, extremely short fur and floppy ears. Daisy is short with longer fur, a curled tail and standing ears. Penny has also been mistaken for a Doberman puppy, Miniature Doberman, miniature Rottweiler, Dachshund, Manchester Terrier and a German Shepherd puppy... O.o Most people just refer to them as "small dogs" "tiny little things" etc.

Just today *an obedience judge* attending the agility class we're in asked if she was a "pure Jack Russell or a mix?"! Surprise  We have had corgi before, but JRT is most common.  I can see that there could be some in her background, but purebred?!!!?

LOL. A guinea pig Chihuahua? Wowowow.

Yep, looks just like a chihuahua puppy:

     Sally's weirdest breed guess was a pit bull/pug mix....Hmm

TONS of people think Jack is a chessy.  I'm not sure what is more interesting--that more people can't identify the most common breed in the US or that this many people know what chessies are, or what they think they are--lol!  I think what throws them off is that Jack is a pretty compact lab--about 65 lbs, and lean and muscular.  Plus, he has a LOT of hair--bench labs tend to, but field and pet bred labs are what is most commonly seen in this area.

This is the best pic I have on this computer of his hair--if you look at his back it does this wavy/poofy thing.  Last time we went to Petsmart 3 separate people asked if he was a chessy

One person mistook Shadow for a Chocolate Lab, even though Chocolates don't have four colors, small, pointed ears, and bushy tails and a double coat. More often than not, more times than I can literally count, Shadow is mistaken for a wolf or wolf hybrid, such as a timberwolf. This pic is good for showing the confusion for many.

Funny thread! Everyone and their brother asks if T-Bone is a "Shiloh Shepherd" erm.... no. He's a classic black and tan, short coated GSD. I find it interesting people take wilder and wilder breed guesses as designer dogs and not-exactly-a-real-breed dogs become more popular.

One lady asked if Toots was a beagle. Have you ever seen a beagle with up-right ears and no tail? C'mon people.

Just curious if your dogs breed(s) has been mistaken for something else. :) Of course Simba gets mistaken for a pure-pit all the time, while I think he looks a lot like one to me, at least, it's pretty obvious he's not a pure-pit.

Every where that I take my harlequin Great Dane, if they don't say "look at the cow", will say, "look at the dalmation" (!!)  Yes, she has spots -- but nothing like a dalmations; she is 33" at the shoulder and over 125 pounds -- that's one huge dalmation! Smile

I have been very shocked at how many people have asked if Benny (aussie) is a Mountain Dog..... Indifferent

I've had a few people INSISTS that Casey is a chi-weenie. Looks JUST like the one they got at the store. Um, no thank you. Not only is he an avid HERDER, he also has a boat load of terrier energy and personality. Don't tell me what MY dog is, and I wont tell you that your 'lab' is really a pit bull. Fair?

well we've had our fair share of odd guesses - giant pit bull - that he would be at 29" tall, "is he a chocolate or a black lab" (he's a dark brindle with a white spotted chest), one real funny guy said Holstein and?- um yea funny,  pure rottie?????, Rhodesian ridgeback, weimaraner

admittedly its better people think he's a lab than a pit bull, it is easier to walk him when he isn't viewed as a killer - I so admire those of you with pitties.  I cannot imagine how difficult it is to be out and about with them Sad

I love to post this pic of B with a lab buddy

B is about 6 inches taller, has an extremely short single coat, a LONG skinny tail that points, oh and the spotted white chest LOL Yup he's all lab

Bailey is a purebred Whippet and a 'rare' color purebred Greyhound(because Greyhounds are only suposed to be grey, duh)

He is also a purebred yellow Lab, & a rare color of German Shepherd (the person that called him that said "What a shame his ears didnt go up all the way, you should get them fixed"...)

The AKK get mistaken all the time for Siberian puppies, but I don't fault people for that guess.  The one that always gets me is I'm constantly asked if they're Shiba Inu dogs.  Umm, no.

Honor was once mistaken for a raccoon...Confused.  Doesn't everyone walk their pet raccoon on a leash?

Nike is always a collie.  I understand that he's oversized, but really, he's only 18". Stick out tongue  At least now he's got a lot of adult coat in, so I'm no longer asked about my border collie mix.

Well, Jewel was once mistaken for a Dachshund. She is a 16" Italian Greyhound. 15 1/2" of that is LEGS! LOL! She's commonly mistaken for a Whippet (very close) or Greyhound puppy. She has a totally gray face, but she's puppy friendly. I've also been told that she *IS* a Chihuahua, and I'm mistaken. Clearly, all Chihuahuas have rosette ears, and weigh 13 lbs.

Bean, the Chinese Crested, has very commonly been called a Chihuahua, a Mexican thing, a Pap-ill-lawn, and an OMG WHY DID YOU SHAVE THAT POOR DOG?!?!??

    • Gold Top Dog

My Dobe mix was once called "one of those dogs that kills children". This was while he was eating a "baby cone" at the local ice cream shop LOL

Lots of people call have called the GSDs Police Dogs. German Police Dogs or perhaps my favorite German Police. The girls were always questioned as to if they were puppies or mixes because they are "so small". They range between 23" - 24" and 60-65lbs, not really small except the people who say that always seem to have a friend/neighbor/relative who has a GSD that is "this tall" (about as tall as a Shetland Pony) and weighs 150+lbs. I've also been asked if they were Mini GSDs LOL

The Corgi was actually mistaken once for...no joke - a Pit Bull!

It is rare that people can identify the Belgians as what they are when we are out and about. They are usually called Schipperkes, Black Collies (or sometimes Shelties), Collie/GSD mixes or Wolf Hybrids. I find Schip to be a weird guess, since it would seem someone knowing what a Schip was would also know that they are much smaller than my dogs. Jagger has also been mistaken for a bear by children :)

I raised a Greyhound for someone once and had probably the strangest case of mistaken indentity with her. I had her at a local outdoor flea market one day and a woman thought she was.... a goat Huh? Even when once the woman brought her children up to talk to me and was right next to the dog, she thought still thought she was petting a goat. I had the awkward experience of saying "she's a dog actually, a Greyhound" when the woman commented that she always thought goats "had feet more like hooves".

I'll admit, that trumps my eskie story. ROFL!
